Vehicle Detail

1966 Chevy II Super Sport with L79 327 cubic inch V8/350 HP & 360 Torque Here for your consideration is my 1966 Chevy II SS with an L79 V8. I love my Chevy II also known as Nova but I have too many cars and so I am offering it for sale to you. I bought this car in the Fall of 2012 from a car collector in Scottsdale, AZ. I used an online VIN search service and I was only able to trace the origins of this SS to 2005 where it was last registered in Massachusetts. The RPO L79 327 engine is a very rare option and I have no documentation to prove it is original to this car. What I can say is that this is an awesome vintage muscle car that will get you a lot of attention everywhere you go even with the very rough paint job that the previous owner said was from the 80s. The car's paint should be Willow Green per the Cowl Tag but the black is tough looking and the car has cool retro pinstripe/brush design details throughout. The pin stripe art was done by Robert Gorske of Roade Studio in Bristol, CT, you can see Roade Studio in very small print in picture #23 of this listing. Chevy IIs with their mild-mannered, low key styling and with this high horsepower engine (the modifications this car has were common in the 60's and yielded HP figures over 400 horses) were popular weekend racers due to their relatively light weight (under 3,000 lbs) and so they developed a stealth "sleeper" reputation. This car was definitely a weekend warrior sometime in the distant past as it has several modifications such as fenderwell headers, MSD ignition components, traction bars, rear-mounted battery with kill switch, HD radiator and Hurst shifter (which I have replaced with an original GM chrome shifter). The previous owner did not race this car nor do I. I drive it to car shows and I keep it garaged and well-maintained. Two major upgrades I made (if you like cars to be closer to original) include replacing a 1971 Muncie M20 for a 1966 Muncie M20 (both wide-ratio) and I replaced the 4.10 gear 12 bolt later model rear end for a 1965 Chevy II 12 bolt with 3.55 gears and Eaton Posi for highway driving. And now for the details: EngineThe date code on the front of the block is several months later than the 4th Quarter May, 1966 that is on the Cowl Plate and there is also no VIN stamp to the left of the FII05ZI. The report provides many photos and highlights the strengths and flaws of the car. Mainly the paint and some rust areas around the front wheel wells. I welcome viewings of the car and independent inspectors to ensure you will be happy with your purchase. I will work with your shipping company upon completion of sale. In general, proportions were square, but dimensions and features changed little. Highlights included a bold grille and semi-fastback roofline. "Humped" fenders in an angular rear end were reminiscent of larger 1966 Chevrolets, though the 1966 Chevy II and Nova had vertical taillights and single headlights. For just $159 more buyers could choose a Nova Super Sport. Available only in a Sport Coupe, the Nova SS was top of the line. The Nova SS was visually distinguished by wide rocker panels and a bright aluminum deck lid cove. It had bright SS emblems on the grille and in the ribbed rear panel, and Super Sport script on the quarter panels. Wheel covers were inherited from the 1965 Malibu SS. Strato-bucket front seats were included, but a tachometer cost extra. The ’66 Chevy II sales brochure clearly promoted the Super Sport as the “Chevrolet Chevy II Nova Super Sport,” but the name "Nova" was not used anywhere on the body.Several engines were available, but a new Turbo-Fire 327 cu in V-8 delivering 350 hp was the top of the line. This engine, with the close-ratio four-speed manual transmission, is what turned the little Chevy II into a muscle car that more than surprised all the other muscle cars on the street and at the drag strip. Other pieces that made this Car such a killer combo included a 600 cfm Holley four-barrel carb, the first-ever high-performance hydraulic camshaft, dual-snorkel air cleaner, and choice of steep gears made a big difference. These Chevy II's could be had brand new for under $3,000, if you did not tack on a lot of un-needed options. The weakest parts on the Chevy II was the rear mono-leaf springs and the standard 6.95-15 tires. These tires, if replaced by larger ones or slicks, would probably knock down the 1/4 mile times by half a second or more.According to the magazines, the most famous L79 was ran by legendary Bill Jenkins. His 1966 Chevy II L79 was entered in C/Stock in NHRA championship drag racing in 1966 and the car got down to the low 11s. The car to beat in that class was a dual quad 426 Street Hemi owned and driven by Jere Stahl of Stahl Headers fame. Stahl won most of those C/Stock final rounds, but Jenkins won a few with the Chevy II. That the L79 was rated that high to put it in C/Stock with the 425 horse Hemi cars, speaks volumes as to how fast this car really was. It really deserves to be on this list and we don' think there will be much arguing about that.**MCG user @Bobby's Muscle Cars told us about a run-in with one of these cars in his '65 GTO. The results are what gave this car its name."I remember in late 1965, I had a 1965 GTO that I had just started to modify and race. It was a 4 barrel car, 4-speed, 3.55 gear car I had added headers, hi-po clutch, mag wheels, and some ignition work to it. It ran low 14's and high 13's depending on tire spin. All of us hung out at the Frisch's Big Boy in New Albany, Indiana back then and I was there one night when a friend of mine pulled up along side of me and wanted to know if I wanted to run his brand new Chevy II so he could get an idea how fast it was. I looked it over and it was dead stock looking, small tires, 327 cross-flag emblems, 4speed, not much else though it sounded good. I figured he was lighter weight than me so he would probably pull me off the line and then I would pass him on my second or third gear. Well......we raced the first time and he did pull me exactly as I thought...only thing was that I did not catch him in any gear! I thought I must have spun my tires so we raced again. Same results. And a third time. Nothing different. He won all three by a length or so! We met back up at the Frisch's and I jumped out and asked him what the heck he had bought? He then told me the letter and two numbers that would mean so much...L79. I found out that meant 350 horse pulling about 2800 lbs. No wonder I got beat. That taught me a valuable lesson, never underestimate your opponent till you find out what he really has under his hood!
