EngineThe M52B30 inline six-cylinder engine was the latest iteration in a long line of acclaimed straight sixes from BMW. The motor claimed a spot on Ward's "10 Best Engines" list for 2003. The M52B30 has dual overhead cams, 24 valves and BMW's variable valve timing system. Compression ratio is 10.2-to-1; bore and stroke are 3.31 inches and 3.53 inches, respectively. The engine produces a solid 225 horsepower at 5,900 rpm and 214 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. FuelEconomy.gov rates the 530i's fuel economy at 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with a manual transmission, and 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway with an automatic.Drivetrain and Chassis The 2003 BMW 530i uses a front-engine, rear-wheel drive powertrain design. A choice of a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission was available. The car's fully independent system consists of struts and coil springs up front, and a multi-link setup and coil springs in the rear. Stabilizer bars at both ends help the car achieve its stable handling. Four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with standard anti-lock functionality provide stopping power.
