Vehicle Detail
Oh man, i hate to do this, but I am selling my baby.... I bought this 1973 Pontiac Grandville back in 2008. I bought the car from a local bloomington/normal mechanic who had about 10 projects in his driveway - mostly Chevelles and Cadillacs. This has always been one of my favorite cars and i saw it in his shop and begged him to sell it to me. He had started the engine rebuild and decided to sell it to me for $2,500. I knew i was overpaying for the car due to the work it needed, but i was destined to get her running. I started by rebuilding the entire engine. the bottom half is all original. I pulled it out and cleaned everything up and re-painted it powder blue. I then put all the original items back on the top half including the original quadrajet carb. I got the car running, but it was both hot and rough, so here's all the new parts: - I replaced the entire cooling system. The radiator was about $400 since the convertible radiators for this car are hard to find. I also added a water pump, thermostat and all new hoses. (about $600 spent total) - I took out the points system and replaced it with an updated electronic system (about $500 spent) - I replaced the quadrajet carb with an edleblock small block 4 barrel carb, which sits on a conversion plate ($300 total) - I replaced all the plugs, wires, the distributor and the battery - I replaced the master cylinder After all this, the engine was running like brand new. I had the car running over 80 mph and i could endlessly screech the tires. It is a big motor with a lot of power and ran like a dream. While i was working on the engine, i had a whole lot of body work to do. I started by removing the hood, trunk lid, doors and interior. Please read this part carefully! - the hood is a little bit bent and does not line up properly. It was pretty much rust free and looks nice. - the doors had a good amount of rust where the door meets the car - the trunk lid had some rust in one of the corners (it is starting to show thru a little) - the driver side floor boards are almost completely gone - there is a small hole in the frame underneath the back seat - the trunk is almost completely gone. it is entirely rusted to the point where it was being held up by a bunch of bungee cords. I am OK at body work, but this was way over my head. it would need to be addressed by a professional! - the quarter panels and rocker panels all got small patch jobs and have a good amount of bondo After all this work was done, i had the car professionally painted Hugger Orange - that's right, its the same color as the General Lee - YEEE HAW. honestly, with such a rough body, the paint looks good from 20 feet. Up close, you can definitely see the imperfections. I have all the original badges and the chrome trim for the car, i just never put it back on because it looked more like a muscle car without it. The interior is in surprisingly good shape for a car like this. it is dirty from sitting for 4 years, but i had it cleaned up really nice. all the wood trim is in-tact. hell, all the interior lights and gauges even worked! The original PMD wheels are on the car and are in nice shape. the driver side front tire is flat, and so is the spare. the car would likely need to be trailored home The brakes worked ok 4 years ago, but again, the car has not been driven, so i would trailor it Before i moved back to Chicago, i was going to put a new convertible top on. I ripped the old one off and never put a new one on. all the parts are there and 4 years ago the top went up and down just fine. This is everything i can tell you about the car. Like i said, she was my baby. I used to cruise her up to the lake on weekends with my buddies and their rat-rods and muscle cars. She was also in a few car shows. It used to go 75-80 mph no problem for over 50 mile rides. All-in-all i have about $5,500 into her. possibly more. she ran like a dream from 2008 until 2010. I had to move to chicago for work and had nowhere to put her up here. So after that i started her maybe twice a year - she fired up every time. I have not been back to Normal since 2012 so the car has not been started in 2 years. My plan was to hold on to her until i had the space to do a frame-off resto, or to find an arizona car that just needed the engine, but now i am losing my garage spot in normal and cannot pay to store her. This is a rare car, and one of the few big bodied American convertibles left surviving. What you are buying here is a totally rebuilt 455 engine, a solid interior and some nice wheels. I have the car priced for that! I am being real here, so i expect you do the same - if you win, you pay. I been totally honest about the rust and the fact you likely need to ship/tow the car home. If you have a solid body to put this engine in, or have the skills to weld in the trunk, then this car is a steal for you. I really want to see this car back on the road and I really am sad i have to sell it. She was a beast and so much fun to cruise around in with 7 of my good friends in the car with me - yes, they all fit comfortably!
