Vehicle Detail
For Sale: 1976 Pontiac Trans Am restoration/modification as a project for completion. Work began almost 4 years ago progressing to a true "frame off" restoration. Starting point was a black North Carolina car with 93,000 miles with a non-numbers matching engine/transmission combination. I will review as many details as I can recall from the past 4 years but no matter how much I write I will leave out some details. All steps and parts are first class. Off hand the only part on the car that has not been restored or replaced is the brake power booster unit. The engine is a new GM LS2 long block with performance cam, Edelbrock intake and fuel rails, "pinned" crankshaft (for the supercharger) all modifications performed by Dallas Performance. Supercharger is the Procharger D1. Alcohol injection system from Alkycontrol. Transmission is a 4L80E Level 5 build from RPM Transmissions with a 2500 stall torque converter. Fuel system is totally new including stainless tank from Rick's. Brake system is also all new with Wilwood discs at all four wheels. New 17 x 9 wheels from Year One with new Sumitomo tires. Suspension is completely new with all parts from Ride Tech including coilovers and quadralink rear suspension. Rear end is a 9" Currie unit with 3.25 gearing and a Wavetrac differential. Of course, subframe connectors were installed. Drive shaft is custom sized, balanced and a drive shaft loop is installed. Vintage Air HVAC system has replaced the factory system. ECM is a GM unit from Speartech with a TCI computer for the transmission. All glass is new. All weatherstripping is new. New radiator with Spal dual fans. Custom built front mount intercooler from Dallas Performance. Dynotech headers are the starting point of the custom exhaust with crossover pipe, dual electric cut-outs, and Hushpower mufflers. Car was totally repainted in 2011 Corvette Cyber Grey metallic. Spray on undercoating was applied on a rotisserie as step one when the rebuild was begun. The interior was totally redone including all new GM seat belts and smells like a new car not a stale, musty 35 year interior. Front seats are Recaros that were standard equipment in limited edition Trans Am models in 1981, 1982 and 1983. Real leather covers the seats. Door panels are the "Bandit" ones from Year One primarily chosen to allow upgraded speakers. New speakers are installed in the rear deck and the front doors. Also included is a subwoofer with enclosure and amplifier mounted in the truck. Radio has not been purchased. Steering wheel was recovered with real leather and rim is slightly thicker than stock. Dash panel was modified for additional gauges which are all special order from Speedhut. Shifter is a B&M Quicksilver unit. Parking brake was modified as a hand lever located between the front seats. Headliner has an embossed "screaming chicken" logo which is difficult to see in black in the pictures. HID headlights and fog lights. Ring Brothers hood hinges. Car is for sale as a project as this father/son project has taken way too long. The son is now focused on beginning his career and the dad has run out of desire and energy. The car doesn't need too much for completion. Cosmetically it needs the hood and side view mirrors painted and installed and a custom console fabricated. Brakes are not quite right from either air in the lines that I have not been able to clear or possibly an internal leak in the new Wilwood master cylinder? The biggest issue remaining is completing the electrical system. I wish to describe every item about the car as accurately as possible and this is the one last major obstacle in completing the car. There is a voltage issue (lack of voltage) that I cannot locate. This may be a simple fix that has been overlooked (again and again) or it may require a new ECM (and/or a new ECM harness). I just don't have the motivation to track this down anymore. I have reviewed the car as best I can and of course will be happy to answer any further questions. The car may or may not start to be driven onto a trailer so I would plan for the need for a winch to load the car for transport. Will assist with transport arrangements. No warranties of any kind. Auction may end early if the car is sold locally before auction end. $500 deposit required within 48 hours of auction close. Clear title. When completed this car will be a great vehicle for simple cruising, autocross runs, or even the drag strip. Original intent was to build a cruiser to participate in the Hot Rod Power Tour!
