Vehicle Detail

You are bidding on a high quality driver-level 1982 Porsche 911SC sunroof coupe. It was a Northern California car from day one until 2012 when I brought it back to Northern Michigan. Rest assured, however, it’s never seen a Michigan winter. My 911 has never been in the hands of an unsympathetic or underfunded owner as the voluminous service records indicate with one whopper for over $15,000. That receipt includes a $9,000 glass out and trim off/new rubber respray in 1999 (in the original and rare metallic Rosewood) that several 911 experts at Porsche Parade last year in Traverse City mistook for very nice original paint. At this point it has the usual minor road chips on the valance and bumper, a small door ding on the passenger side and two quarter sized touch ups on the cowl. (The PO was replacing the hood shocks when a gust of wind blew the lid back scratching the corners of the cowl). There is one acrylic-filled rock chip in the windshield. It has a clean CarFax and no sign of previous body damage. It is rust-free. The original tan leather interior smells great and presents beautifully with still supple leather and only a hint of patina. If you want to nit-pick, the driver's seat could stand to have the cushion re-stuffed. Door panels, rear seats, parcel shelf, brown headliner and carpets are very nice. There are no rips or anything unsightly and it comes with a high-quality set of brown and tan coco mats from CocoMats.com. The dash has a $300+ cap on it in brown to match the rest of the interior trim. I owned the car for over a year before I realized it was a dash cap. The steering wheel was professionally/correctly recovered and looks as new. Sound system is a Blaupunkt cassette (with an iPod aux-in) and Nakamichi speakers. Other than the lowered ride height, the car is bone stock and drives exactly as it should. It has a very smooth shifting 915 gearbox with no noise or synchro issues. The PO performed a top end rebuild (this receipt is unfortunately missing) about fifteen thousand miles ago and it sailed through a pre-purchase inspection when I bought it two years and 5,000 miles ago. It has great power and one bar of oil pressure for each 1,000 rpms and compression was between 155 and 168. No smoking or funny noises. It had a valve adjustment and major service at 197,000 miles and a Mobil 1 oil change a few hundred miles ago. Although it passed California smog immediately prior to my purchase, Michigan has no emissions testing so I can’t guarantee anything here although all emissions equipment is still in place and it still sports the California emissions sticker on the driver’s side quarter window. Naturally, it’s had all recommended updates including Carrera chain tensioners, Bosch H4 headlights and an air box pop-off valve. Needs are few: Paper and foil under-hood heater hose needs replacing; hood shocks are toast again (I will replace these prior to pick-up); minor oil seepage from both cam lines; the power mirror switch, washer pump, cruise and power antenna are inop. A new Hirschmann power antenna is included to replace dead one. A/C is cooler than outside air but would likely need new lines and conversion to R134a if you wanted it to "work" but 911 air conditioners were not terribly effective when new. Currently riding on factory 16 X 6 and 16 X 7 Fuchs forged alloys and Kumho Ecstas with good tread but they’re about nine years old. I would certainly consider replacing them soon. With fresh rubber, I wouldn’t hesitate to drive the car anywhere. While certainly not a car that would contend at a PCA concours (I treat my cars very well, but my detailing kit does NOT contain Q-Tips for the tire treads), it is head and shoulders above much of the worn-out SC junk that’s popping up on the market in response to the higher prices these cars are commanding. Comes with a full set of tools, manuals, key card and many records including Oakland, CA dealer stamps in the service book up to 169,000 miles and its original California “Sunshine” plate (the first owner traded a 1978 928 for the car, hence the vanity plate 2DOR928). This is a US-delivered California spec car, the front German tag is just decoration for single plate Michigan. It has no connection to the car and is going back on my garage wall, so it’s not included. This car has been PCA owned and maintained regardless of cost, I’m selling to buy a Ferrari 308. With the air-cooled 911 market officially passing from superheated to insane, this could well be your last chance to buy a ready-to-enjoy classic 911 in the low twenties. I’ll gladly assist domestic and overseas buyers in any way I can with shipping but it’s ultimately your responsibility. Know that truckers generally charge an extra $200 to come up to this part of Michigan. Although Traverse City is in the lower peninsula, it’s still about four hours from Detroit, five from Chicago and two from Grand Rapids. Sale is “as is” and any pre-purchase inspections need to take place during the pendency of the auction. You are not buying an “option” to purchase the car. Zero feedback, non-US buyers with unexplained negative feedback need to e-mail me before bidding. Thanks and happy bidding, it really is a great car.
