Vehicle Detail

1984 Mercedes Benz 240TD diesel wagon. Gray Market import so the system doesn't recognize the VIN. VIN is WDB1231831F030141. First owner was US State dept employee who bought it in Germany and had it imported to the US. I have the original maintenance booklet with service stamps from the first dealer in Welden. It was imported in 1987 and brought to Springfield, VA. The gauges were converted to mph, and the lights made compliant with US regulations. Maintenance is tracked in the booklet until 2000. It was then sold to another gentlemen (Army officer) in northern VA in 2003. He tracked all maintenance etc thereon in separate booklet which I have for you. I bought it from him about a month ago with great intentions but it looks like I won't have the time or space for it. I never titled it so you'll be the 3rd owner. Mechanically, the car runs like a top. It shifts well, the brakes stop well, the engine has plenty of power (or at least as much power as it should...), there is no blowby, the tires have at least 80% tread, and there are no vibrations or noises from 0 to 75mph. The suspension and steering parts all look to have service life remaining. You're not going to win any drag races with the naturally aspirated I4 diesel, but the manual trans with a well-matched rear end make it driveable and within reason. It's faster than a VW bus, at any rate. Oddly enough, it has self-leveling suspension, and it works as it should. The windows are manual crank. They all have full travel, and I directed a hose at every window and door and the weather seals hold tight. There is no rust on the bottom of any of the door skins and the floors are solid. It has its original first aid kit, jack, and a full size spares. The jack holes are all in good shape. The rear hatch goes up and stays up. All lights and the horn works. It had a current VA safety inspection when I bought it. The original interior was cloth but the front seats were replaced by MB-Tex seats from a 1983 300SD. I have the original seats for you to take with it, as I was going to swap them back in. It has an aftermarket Pioneer single CD sound system that sounds great. It also has a tow hitch and ball. Here's what's wrong. The dash is cracked. Some of the interior trim in the rear around the back windows is no longer anchored down and is coming down along the window. The clasp for the spare tire is broken. The fan only blows on high. I have one out of a W123, but I'm not sure it's the right one. I haven't installed it yet. The A/C does not work. It's an aftermarket unit. The previous owner says the compressor seized, and that he heard it going, but he doesn't know if the compressor just went or if it was a leak that caused it to go. It's an R12 system but would be easily converted when you replaced the compressor. It's a Sanden SD-508 which you can score for under $200. Luckily it is well-tinted so when you're moving it's not that bad. There is rust underneath the front bumper, on the driver's side front fender near the bottom, and on the passenger rear quarter and hood where it's been scraped. I was told a tree fell on the hood and that he backed into a tree to scrape up the right rear. He also said he backed into a tree and you can see the bumper is a little deformed as is the rear rubber trim piece. The paint is oxidized in spots and has plenty of scratches on it. There's also some tree sap on the roof and passenger side I couldn't quite get all the way off. The odometer is frozen but the records indicate it was working up to December 2013. Looking at the mechanical and interior condition of the car, I believe the mileage isn't far off. I have the two original seats, in like new condition. I have an extra shifter as the reverse lockout on the existing one is a little weak. I have a fan resistor, and some extra filters that you can have. I also have a 3.0L OM617A turbocharged engine from a 1983 300SD that was wrecked with under 130k miles on it that I was going to swap into it. If you want that too, you can have it for $800. It still has the 722.3 trans attached to it. Please ask any and all questions. This is no fully restored gem but it's a solid driver with a neat history.
