Vehicle Detail

1959 Lincoln Capri Coupe Excellent driver, and LOADED with options. Rare functional Air Conditioning and Heat! I am listing this car for a good friend of mine. I know this car very well and am also an owner of 2 1960 Lincolns myself so I am very familiar with these cars. Be forewarned, this is a rather lengthy description but I'm also asking you to consider the purchase of a 55 year old vehicle possibly from across the planet. As I like to say, I like surprises on my birthday, not when I am selling cars. First, this is a 1959 Lincoln Capri (Sometimes referred to as a Lincoln series) 2 door coupe. Model # 63A. Originally this car was Sunstone and Tawn, currently it's finished in Sunstone with a Glacier White roof. The car is, while technically a base model, equipped with nearly every factory available major option. The odometer shows in the low 80s, last I looked around 82,000 miles. Without documentation this cannot be proven although much of the car looks to be quite low mileage. Factory Equipped Options: Power Windows 6-Way Power seat Power Door Locks Remote Trunk Release Heated and Defroster (To be fair, while it's an option I don't think they made very many of these without heaters) Travel-Tuner AM Radio (Commonly known as the Town and Country Radio) Air Conditioning (Includes tinted glass) Directed Power Differential (Limited slip diff) Automatic Headlamp dimmer (Autronic Eye) The car lacks only power vent windows and an FM radio as options. My friend purchased this car from a dealer in Arkansas in 2012. He was told the car came from an Estate but this cannot be proven. I do know that I am nearly certain that this car was in Long Island for sale with some needs in 2011 but since I didn't record the VIN I can't be certain. After purchasing the car we found that the selling dealer (Surprise!) lied and that while very nice, there was some rust in the rocker panels and in a couple of small spots in the engine compartment. The rust was cut out and new metal was welded in and it was properly repaired. The last owner spent, literally, thousands of dollars getting the heat and AC working. If you are familiar with these cars, the AC and Heat systems in them are complex and very expensive to restore. This car has a new Drier, rebuilt heater cores (Yes, these cars use TWO heater cores and evaporators), rebuilt evaporators, new lines, new AC compressor, rebuilt condensor, etc. The heat works great and the AC blows cold. I am in the middle of preparing to do this same job on my 1960 coupe, parts alone will cost $3,000 and the labor is huge, changing the heater cores alone is a 6+ hour job EACH. A professional shop might charge up to $3,000 in labor to do this job. Plus parts. The air distribution system works properly. If you know these cars that's something rarely seen on them for over 50 years. The only issue is that there is a small leak in one AC pipe. Mike JB Welded it and it seems to hold, but someone who can carefully braze aluminum should be able to fix it on the car and it would be a more permanent repair. With the sole exception of the power locks (Which, quite frankly, we haven't messed with yet as we're low on round tuits) everything electrical on the car is functioning. Seat, windows, Gauges, lights, etc.. they all work. The stereo sounds fantastic. While this car does not have the incredibly rare FM tuner, the original radio has had its' internals replaced with an AM-FM tuner. It looks stock but sounds modern. This is usually around a $500 job. The interior is in VERY nice original condition and shows hardly any wear. The headliner is a bit darkened as can be seen in the pics, but, aside from a reupholstered dash pad, the entire interior is very nice and all original. It even has original rubber front floor mats, these are very rare. Oh yeah, the dash "TV screen" has a couple of minor crcaks, but all 58-59s seem to have this issue. It's not cracked all across. The interior also has a lighted compass located above the inside mirror. Think Navigation, 1959 style. The body, as I said before, is solid and very nice. The paint is in nice and presentable shape for a driver. It won't win an LCOC national show but it looks great and has great shine. There's a few spots behind the rain gutters with a few cracks that are largely hidden and a few spots where some dirt got in the paint but a good wet sand would get rid of most of those. Overall the paint gets compliments at the local shows and cruise nights that it goes to. The stainless is all intact and very nice. The chrome is presentable, but this is perhaps the car's weak spot. The front bumper is a bit thin and faded, and some of the pot metal has pitting but still shines nicely. If it were me I would replate the trim on the back of the trunklid, the rear tailfin trim and the front bumper and call it a day. This car has the *_correct_* Capri / Premiere 8-point hood ornament, NOT the Incorrect Continental one that you usually see. Minor I know, but nice to have and quite rare. It's like new. Mechanically the car is in great shape. The brakes and suspension have been gone through and all is good there. The upper A Arm bushings are new MOOG bushings. The engine runs very well, hardly uses any oil and has great power. It fires right up and starts easily warm or cold. It has very little blowby out of the draft tube (If you know early 430s they ALL seem to have some, it's in their nature) and has good hot and cold compression and is smooth and quiet. The exhaust is in great shape. The transmission shifts well and does not slip. The engine compartment has been nicely detailed and looks great. The engine has been recently tuned and the fuel pump is new. (I put it on myself not 2 weeks ago). There's a slight oil leak likely from the front crank seal and a power steering leak that needs investigating. The car is riding on the CORRECT bias ply 9.50-14 tires that it should have. They are the BFGoodrich Silvertowns as sold by Coker and have excellent tread up front and 40-50% in the back. Don't kid yourself, you can't safely run 14" radials on these cars, they simply weigh too much. Overall this is a really great driver that is NOT the usual monstrous money pit that these cars can be. On one hand it does well at local shows but is not a national show winning trailer queen. On the other hand I'm building one of those cars myself, and the reserve on this car is less than the chrome bill on that car! However it's a fantastic car. I bought my 60 Coupe on here for $6,000 and have spent $11K+ on it and it's not as nice as this car. This car is priced very fairly and priced to sell. Much lesser cars have brought within 75% of the reserve recently. I would not hesitate driving this car across country. The car is located in North Arlington, NJ and you are welcomed and encouraged to come and see it before the auction ends. Please, if I forgot something, ask questions! Thank you and good luck bidding.
