Vehicle Detail
The possibilities are endless with one of these super cool postal jeeps! This one comes with a large 2.5 four cylinder that came in the Chevrolet Nova, a very narrow limited slip rear end, and a powerglide transmission that will bolt to nearly any hard hitting Chevrolet engine. You can use this for nearly anything. Use it to put around your property and do maintenance, weld on a trailer ball to either bumper to easily and haul or maneuver a trailer or boat, refit it as a passenger vehicle, add a roof rack and use it as a beach vehicle to haul your surf boards, outfit it as a service vehicle for various jobs, pump up the horsepower and drag race it, or you can even use it as a base for building a rat rod. Your imagination is the limit! Wikipedia can describe the vehicle better than I can so here is an excerpt on the DJ: The DJ-5A (Kaiser Co.) used a standard CJ-5 front end, with a four-cylinder Chevrolet Nova 153 cu in (2.5 L) engine and two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. In 1971, this was changed to a unique five-slot grille without turn signals that was used only on postal Jeeps. The 1971 model actually has the grille extend past the front of the hood edge. This allowed more room for the AMC Straight-6 engine and radiator. While resembling the CJ5 series, these were built as a completely enclosed, rear-wheel drive vehicle, with sliding doors (which could be opened while driving), and a swinging rear door. Most models only had the driver's seat and a mail tray where the second seat would normally be located. One improvement over earlier Jeeps was mounting the rear springs outside of the frame rails, thus providing greater stability for the vehicle with its top-heavy enclosed cargo area, especially at highway speeds. Most models were also equipped with a limited slip differential and a heavy-duty steering gearbox. This fine specimen was bought by a local military man who was pretty excited about fixing it up. It looks like he did put some time, energy, and money into it before he was deployed (the fan shroud is a work of art) but he came back hurt and decided to sell it since he could no longer work on it. It sat in his driveway for a couple years and then I bought it. So its not perfect and could use some tinkering, but it starts runs and drives reliably and looks like everything that has been done to it was done right. Here is what I know:The engine and transmission is strong, the brakes are weak, the parking brake works quite well. The interior is spartan but pretty well kept, the seat has no tears, some of the function switches and gauges have been replaced and show nice oil pressure and amperage. The body is in pretty good condition, very light rust in only a couple places but no rust through anywhere, looks pretty good. The engine has either had a new cylinder head put on it or the engine has been rebuilt. I took a look under the valve cover and the head was absolutely spotless, no varnish or gunk anywhere and the valvetrain looked the same. I do not think the valve lash is set correctly or perhaps a lifter will not pump up because there is some clatter noise, but it definitely does not sound like a hurt engine (not an engine "knock", does not smoke, etc),and it runs out very strong. Its a neat little jeep! Starting price on the auction is $1500 with no reserve, I am advertising it locally and reserve the right to sell it locally at any time and end the auction.
