Vehicle Detail
1952 Willys M38A1 - 1st Generation Korean War Jeep NO RESERVE Thank you for checking out my 1952 Willys M38A1, Military Jeep. This is a 1st Generation model, built Sept, 1952. The First Gen, Original Round Fender M38A1, were built from 9/52-11/53, Second Generation Nov 1953-1971, so to have a first production run M38A1 is pretty cool. This Willys, is from the first month of production being 9/52. I am a car guy 100% and my favorite rigs, are always the first models that come out, and this is exactly why I bought this Jeep. There are some noticeable differences when you are looking at one of these rigs, first of all the identification tag on the dash, says it is a M38A1, and denotes that it is a 1952, built 9/52. One of the first things you will notice is that the Battery box on top of the cowl, has 8 thumb screws, around the box, 2nd gen, had 2 latches. The front fender seams, run at a 45 degree angle back toward the cowl, these are specific to 1st gen Jeeps. The grill area on 1st gen, has no round cut out for large bolt, at the bottom of grill like 2nd gen, and also has 2 front grill hinge at bottom. These are just a few things that you will notice right away when searching for a M38A1 there are some other small differences. This Jeep runs very good, it idles very nicely, and just purrs like a kitten, when it is cold you do have to have everything just right though, pull the choke out all the way, pump the gas pedal a few times, make sure the wiper vacuum line is switched off, and fire away. This will make a nice vehicle for someone who wants to take it to shows and parades, or just use around your property. Overall it is a very nice example, it has not been overly restored, it is what I would call a driver, it has some chips and scatches, it even has a few paint runs, these rigs were never perfect by anymeans, they were meant to fight for our country. This Jeep you will find though, is very solid, underneath is very clean, there are a couple small rust spots underneath, but nothing I would be worried about, this is as solid as they come. This is a NO RESERVE Auction, which means, I started this auction at $19.52, and let it roll, what ever it sells the top bidder owns it. I have been doing it this way for a long time, it is fun to watch, and I'll let the market do what it is going to do. Thanks and Happy Bidding, Jason 503-910-2085 The body on this Jeep is in great shape, mentioned before that this is a 1st Gen 1952 Willys, and explained the details about that. All the decals are removable, besides the Big Star on hood, it is painted on, the rest are decals. I was going to have them painted on, but thought the new owner might want to make alterations, or remove them, or just leave them, the choice is up to you. The body is in good shape, there are no rust issues on the outside of the body, no rust bubbles coming through, very clean. Undercarriage, is very original, inside all the wheel wells are very nice, no rust on the inner tub. The floors are excellent, there are a couple small rust spots that you could fix, or just leave, they are pretty minimal for a vehicle like this. I show them in the pictures, there are a couple pea size holes, along the inner trans tunnel, under seat area, you would never see them unless you had it up on a lift. The other 2 are, on the passenger side, next to rocker on floor, again, pretty minor. I would just clean them up a bit, and seal them. The front fenders are in nice shape, the drivers side, has a slight dent on the front corner, you may be able to push it back out. The hood is in excellent shape. Passenger fender is in nice condition. The rockers and quarter panels are in good shape as well, no rust bubbles. The drivers side, rear of the quarter panel, but butted in a little, someone backed into something and left it lightly dented in. There are some filler cracks that happen as well, but very thin filler. You can see up behind the quarter panel, and there was no abuse of filler. The paint is in decent shape, but it was not a professional job by any means, many are not, they are just painted, to look nice, have not seen to many show paint jobs on Army jeeps really, if they were done to perfection they would look strange to me. This jeep has been up kept through the years, and cared for. What is amazing when I look at this Jeep is how clean the floors are, the inner fenders, inner quarter panels are extremely clean, showing no major damage ever done to this Jeep. The front windshield does fold down as well, and glass is in good shape. Interior, well it is a Military Jeep, canvas seats are in great condition, they actually are very comfortable, with just enough spring. There is some small rust staining along some of the seam edges. The Speedometer and Odometer work, the only gauge, not working is the gas gauge. The horn works as well, even the red light works inside speedometer. The exterior lights are all working as well, the front turn signals in grill area are not correct for it, but they work, and easy to change out. The canvas top is in very good shape, no rips or tears. There are couple snaps that have come off, and need replaced, but for the most part the top, side curtains, and doors are in good shape. The rear window has some hazing to it, and the side windows have a tiny fog from age, but you can see out of them good. The top bow and rods are in good shape as well. Look at the pictures and you will get a good idea of what it looks like. The heater switch and blower work as well. It runs very good, it is an original Hurricane F head Engine, though does not have the Serial number on the deck. I know that the engine has been rebuilt at some point, and someone may have decked the numbers off by surfacing the block, or might have been a Military surplus engine not sure. It does have the casting numbers on the side of the block, and they read 806279-W-12-D-AR (cu cr). From what I read this is a M28A1 Hurricane engine from 1953 from different websites. Overall though it looks like it does have a correct Military engine so that is good, just not the original if it is a 1953, I could be wrong. What I do know is someone painted it the wrong Green. I was going to repaint the engine, but it kind of grew on me, so I left it. There are no major oil leaks, actually pretty clean actually for a military Jeep. The transmission shifts very nice, clutch feels very good, original 3spd manual transmission. It actually drives very nice down the road, and the brakes work good. If you have never driven one of these, they are very easy, and a hoot to drive. This is the second M38A1, that I have owned, and they are just a hit with myself and kids. We like to take it out into the woods behind our place, and do a little exploring. The windshield wipers do work as well, manual or vacuum. The engine does not smoke or no signs of burning oil, clean little runner. Overall a great little rig that is useable for just about anything. The 4 wheel drive does work, not much to it, they all do. Obviously does not have standard military tires, but these do ride nice out on the road, and give it a little more beefy look, they are worn, but will last you for some time. Original Military issue wheels though. Please read the auction and view the pictures many times, if you have questions let me know I would be glad to answer them for you. This is a NO RESERVE auction, meaning that I am going to let this car go for the highest bid.
