Vehicle Detail
1968 Honda CL90 Scrambler with only 4700 miles showing on the odometer. Probably correct as the original front tire is still in place. Engine has great compression, runs well and doesn't smoke or leak oil. Extensive rework has been done with a lot of new parts added, including: battery, levers, clutch and front brake cable, throttle grip, foot peg rubber, petcock repair parts, tail light bracket, heat shield for the muffler (solid muffler with no holes in the bottom). The bike has the original Candy Red paint on the frame, with the usual wear spots through to bare metal, but the fuel tank has been repainted. Tank is good with no dents or rust. The original style seat is VERY nice, but missing the center strap. As mentioned, the front tire is original and getting cracks on the sidewalls, so should be replaced ASAP.The bike has had a few falls, no doubt. The original handlebars were slightly twisted and the rear brake pedal is bent up a little too far (the brake pedal return spring is missing). I extracted a sheared off mirror stem from the left handlebar switch and have installed a Heli-coil, so that a regular 8mm mirror can be installed. I have installed a set of NOS handlebars and new OEM mirror. The carburetor has been overhauled and jetted properly and OEM Honda fuel lines installed. The ignition timing and valves have been adjusted to specifications and the bike usually starts on the 1st or 2nd kick. I just replaced the camchain and main roller with NOS parts, along with some top end gaskets and seals. The tail light and bracket are from an earlier model S90 or something similar. ALL electrical systems are working fine. The bike is titled as a 1969 model, in South Dakota with no plate received with the bike, but I think it is a 1968 instead. My first bike was a 1967 CL90, imported by a USN sailor before they were released in 1968 to the US. That bike had painted fenders. Most of the chrome-fendered bikes were 1968-on editions. This one does not have the front fender reflector, which is listed as being used from serial number: CL90-270527 up to serial number: CL90-304267, which were probably 1969 editions. The Honda ID book shows a CL90 release date of 03/01/67, however I owned the "domestic" bike in April, 1967 and the local Honda dealers didn't even know that this version existed until I drove by with mine. The whole 1967-68 transition had bikes with and without turn signals, reflectors and chromed fenders. I haven't been able to find a detailed parts book that shows affected serial numbers. Often the bikes are titled as whatever the date of sale was, irregardless of when the bike was actually produced. The bike may well have been built sometime in the 1967 production year, but confirming serial numbers to production years is difficult to say the least on many of the small-bore singles built in the 1960-70s. A post-purchase surprise was that the title did not reflect the engine number, which turns out to be from an S90. That number is S90E-496591The front fork boots are getting cracked, but I have a new set of a/m boots included. The headlight shell is not cracked and the speedometer works smoothly. I was able to source a correct 2.50x18 rear tire recently and installed it in place of the 3.00x18 Motocross knobby tire which the bike came with when I received it.There is a broken off EZ-out in one of the muffler heat shield screw mounts and the forward mount insulator has replaced. The baffle in the end of the muffler is from some other model and doesn't completely fit the end of the pipe. The bike has a top speed of about 55 mph and they routinely achieve 100 mpg.The bike needs a good cleaning and detailing, plus the previously mentioned items. It is a clean survivor (with an engine transplant for reasons unknown) and needs a loving home now. Bike is subject to local sale, listed here in the San Diego area. On Mar-20-14 at 23:35:20 PDT, seller added the following information: To clarify, again.. the bike is titled in S. Dakota with no plate. I am working on getting a title-only for the machine, but it will occur after the end of the auction, if needed for a CA buyer. The plate shown in the photos does NOT belong to the bike, but was used just to get it to the gas station and for a few test rides. It is NOT CA registered or titled, as yet. The other option is to just go with no paperwork for a fresh title in CA. Bidders are welcome to retract their bids if this situation doesn't meet their needs. On Mar-21-14 at 19:38:42 PDT, seller added the following information: UPDATE: I now have a valid DMV inspection form, showing both frame and engine numbers from a certified inspector, so a CA title could be pursued with just this and a bill of sale, in case dealing with the SD title is too much to task the DMV with these days. I can also use this to pursue a title-only pink slip here in CA.
