Vehicle Detail
For sale 1972 Dodge Charger factory big block rally red hideaway headlight car from the dry high desert. Very rare and unique Mopar. This car has been stored inside a dry garage with very little use for the last 25 years, only traveling a couple thousand miles during that time. It's a bit of a time capsule from the 80's, having been restored at that time and used very little since. It's a sharp looking, ready-to-go crusier that's jump in and drive ready. I've had more positive comments on this car than any 6-pack or Hemi I've owned. I'll do my best to describe it's condition below. Exterior: Car was repainted to driver quality 25-30 years ago. Shines well and no major flaws, but would need repaint for serious show duty. Great for Cruise Night or weekend shows as is. Stripes are painted on, I think it would be pretty simple to sand and respray if you don't care for them. I think the car looks stunning, and so does everyone else I've talked to. Glass is good, chrome is good with no pitting. Car has a new vinyl top and recent windshield. Virtually rust free, with only minor surface rust on trunk floor from seal leaking, (shown) and under back lip of trunklid (won't show up in pics). There is no salt used on the roads in this area of the high desert, and here in the land of sagebrush and prickly pear cactus we only get 10 inches total moisture per year. I will upload underside pics if needed, but there are no issues. As you can see from the trunk, no effort has been made to conceal anything with undercoating or touchup paint. Driver door hinge creaks but doors close fine and car is super solid. There is a small crack in the paint/glaze at the front of the lower front fender(shown). Also the previous owner put a little badge on with his initals after the Charger nameplate on the driver side(shown). It's a stick on with no holes drilled. Interior: Nice driver quality all original except driver seat, which was recovered in the 80's. Exact grain vinyl wasn't as readily available as now, and it's not a perfect match to the grain of the original back seat. Probably not noticeable to anyone but the most hardcore Mopar experts. Car has not had rodents or smokers and no nasty smells or issues. Carpet is a bit faded and has some tears under the floormats(not visible). Headliner has a few small holes(shown), and a few small cracks in the original dashpad(shown). All in all very presentable for a driver and ready to hop in and go. Windshield wiper knob is incorrect and one vent knob is missing. Radio works fine. Mechanical: Car starts and runs and stops great and pulls hard like a musclecar should. No major issues, and it's tight and nice. When the car was redone in the 80's, the original 400 motor was a bit tired, and was upgraded to a higher compression 1971 383 4bbl with a bit more HP. I don't have the numbers block. Car has headers and new Flowmaster exhaust and sounds fantastic. 727 shifts great and will bark the tires into second gear. Kickdown works great. No major noise, leaks, or smoke, but will puff smoke at startup sometimes, most likely valve seals. I had the complete fuel system gone thru at great expense just to make sure it was clean, including pulling tank, sending unit, rebuilding Holley 1850 carb. 3.23 rear gear is quiet and smooth and a perfect compromise for cruising down the highway and street acceleration. Alternator belt squeals at high rpm at WOT, so that will need adjustment. Tires have good tread but are old and bias ply style and with big n' littles, the car follows every rut - plan on replacing them. I put on a set of radials and the car drives tight and smooth way up over 100mph. There is a minor issue with the headlight doors, one motor has a short and while it opens and closes the headlights doors fine, you have to unplug the door motor or it will cause the headlight relay to start buzzing. Not a big issue, but I disclose every known issue. Pricing/Misc: I got a good deal on this car and you will too. This is a driver car that's ready to go with a set of tires and a wax job, take it to the next level or use as is. As always, cars look better in digital pics than in person so keep that in mind. These cars are rare and book a ton - like around $12k in number 3 condition, even with a small block 318. I have the reserve set to sell at under $7500, making this very affordable muscle - can't begin to build a car to this level for anywhere near that money. I can't see any issues. Also had an inquiry about the radiator core support stamping, and it is numbers matching with VIN.
