Vehicle Detail
After 13 years of ownership, it is time to sell my 1958 Nash Metropolitan convertible. This is a true convertible, not a coupe that someone cut the roof off and converted. Mechanically the car is fabulous. The Austin 1500cc engine and clutch was replaced with a high compression rebuilt engine (Crutcher engine). A rebuilt generator was also purchased from Dick Crutcher (he paints them gold) and installed in this Metro. The oil bath air filter housing now holds a K&N air filter and the original Zenith carburator has been replaced with a Weber carb. The original paper oil filter cannister has been replaced with a spin off oil filter. Original Nash horns work great. However I wanted something a little more friendly so a "beep beep" horn was added. You can switch between the two horns by flipping a toggle switch under the dash. The original Nash Weather Eye heater is intact and works and has the original fan control. The under dash map light functions. We replaced the brake lines with stainless steel lines and use Dot 5 silicone brake fluid. Headlights are halogen lights. The Met averages just over 30 mpg on the highway. That's better than my modern car! Sunburst yellow/white paint scheme is eye catching. The only thing that does not work on the car is the radio and the windshield wipers. The Flying Lady hood ornament was a dealer option (as were the mirrors on the fenders). The hood ornament is a reproduction purchased from a Metropolitan parts vendor. The car does need some body work. It had gone through a cosmetic restoration before we purchased the car from the prior owner in Connecticut. In the ensuing 13 years, there is some cracking/crazing where the bondo is, and the rocker panels need to be replaced. We do have a set of spare rocker panels waiting to be installed. Interior is a 1958 Oldsmobile fabric, seat covers sewn by Shannon Crutcher. A few of the pieces of fabric in the back have not been replaced along the body and extra fabric comes with the car. The convertible top has a few small holes from years of wear. Seatbelts were added to the front seat for safety. Yes, that's a trailer hitch on the back of the Met. We pulled a small, lightweight fiberglass teardrop trailer with the Met. It performed beautifully. Tires should probably be replaced in the near future. The spare has never been used and still has the nubs on it. Red tiedown hooks are in the front. This cutie has been in 3 books, calendars, in the newspaper, on television and even spent a winter in the lobby of the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Michigan. Car is being sold as is-where is with no warrantees expressed or implied. You are welcome to come see the car in person prior to auction end. Deposit of $500 via PayPal within 48 hours upon closing of auction. Buyer is responsible for pick-up of the vehicle. Vehicle will not be released to buyer until all funds have cleared our bank. Full payment is required within 7 days after auction end. We are also going to be listing an early Hudson Metropolitan project car, as well as a small tow behind trailer that was painted to look like the body of a Met. If you have any questions and want to discuss this with us via telephone, please email us your phone number and we'll be happy to call you.On Jul-03-13 at 17:50:14 PDT, seller added the following information: We have added a couple of photos showing the back seat (with the old upholstery showing like described above, replacement fabric will be included), the interior of the trunk area and a photo with the convertible top up. The car does have an original, functioning Met jack that is included in the sale.On Jul-07-13 at 07:42:04 PDT, seller added the following information: We forgot to mention that the Met also has a Crutcher rebuilt fuel pump that we purchased when we picked up the rebuilt engine. I'm trying to figure out how to get more pictures added. I can always email them directly if wanted. On Jul-07-13 at 16:47:07 PDT, seller added the following information: We have just listed our little Metropolitan styled trailer in a different ebay listing. It is not included with this auction, but it sure looks great behind the car. We are going to be listing some other Met items too, so please take a peek at our other listings over the next few days as we continue deciding what we're keeping and what we're letting find a new home. We included photographs of the Met trailer in the folder with all the Met pictures. You can find the link in the answers to questions section. Thanks for looking.
