Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is an extremely Cool and super Rare 1978 Chevrolet Malibu Classic Wagon with it's Original 305 V8 engine, Original 4 Speed Manual Transmission and Posi Rear! This 1978 Malibu Classic Wagon is a very original car with 70,504 Original Miles with it's complete Numbers Matching Drive-Train and even it's Original Saffron Metallic Paint and optional Camel Sport Cloth interior! This Malibu Classic Wagon is well documented from Day 1 and much of the cars original documentation is still with the car! Before I get into a long detailed description about this car, let me start by saying that there are no exact Production Numbers on 4 Speed equipped Wagons although I have read that there were anywhere from 7 to 32 Malibu Wagons equipped with the 4 Speed Manual Transmission although none of these numbers can be confirmed. In 1978 Chevrolet Produced a total of 358,636 Malibu's which included all Malibu Models from the 2 Door Models, 4 Door Models and Station Wagons and there were just 1,640 of those 1978 Malibu's optioned with the 4 Speed Manual Transmission. Just 1640 1978 Malibu's built with a 4 Speed Manual Transmission. That's a very small number of cars. I think it's safe to say that most of those 4 Speed equipped Malibu's were likely 1978 Malibu Sport Coupe's and the model least likely to have the 4 Speed Manual Transmission option would likely be the 1978 Malibu Station Wagon. No matter how you look at it, this is a low production Wagon and with it's interesting list of options and great color combination along with cool history, I have absolutely no doubt that this is a one of a kind car. I'm not saying that this is a 1969 Camaro Z28 but then again there were over 20,000 1969 Camaro Z8's built in 1969. This 1978 Malibu Classic Wagon is just a cool car and equipped with the Optional 305 V8 engine, Optional 4 Speed Manual Transmission, Optional 2.73 Posi Rear, Optional Full Instrumentation/Gauge Package, Rally Wheels, Air Conditioning, AM-FM Radio, Tinted Glass, Deluxe Seat Belts, Front & Rear Floor Mats, Delay Windshield Wipers, Body Side Moldings, Roof Rack, Heavy Duty Cooling, Power Steering & Power Disc Brakes, Optional Sport Cloth Interior... This is absolutely one Super Cool 70,000 original mile 4 Speed Wagon and with it's awesome list of options and it's very good Original unrestored condition, I would think that either a hardcore Chevy collector or a Wagon guy like myself would truly appreciate such a rare, interesting and heavily documented car! IF YOUR INTERESTED IN THIS CAR THEN PLEASE READ ON AND SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM FOR NEARLY 100 PHOTOS OF THE CAR!!! THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR READING THIS LONG AUCTION. THERE IS PLENTY TO READ SO SIT BACK AND ENJOY! This 1978 Malibu Classic Wagon was Special Ordered by it's Original Owners with the optional 305 cubic inch V8 engine and the optional 4 Speed Hurst Shifted Manual Transmission along with a 2.73 Posi Rear. The 305 engine was the largest V8 engine available in the 1978 Malibu when ordered with the 4 Speed Manual Transmission. This Wagon is also Optioned with other cool options such as the Factory Gauge Package(no idiot lights) Rally Wheels, Air Conditioning, Deluxe Seat Belts, Am-FM Radio, Power Steering, Power Disc Brakes, Tinted Glass, Heavy Duty Cooling Package, Front & Rear Floor Mats, Door Edge Guards, Body Side Moldings, Delay Windshield Wipers, Roof Rack , Optional Sport Cloth Interior & more. This 1978 Malibu Wagon was ordered more like a Muscle car than a Family Grocery-Getter and it's complete history from day one is documented! This 1978 Malibu Classic Wagon was Special Ordered by John & Beverly Cabot of Red Hill Pennsylvania back in the Spring of 1978. The Cabot's were looking to buy a new car that would suit their growing family and so they took the short ride from their Red Hill Pennsylvania home to Heimbach & Sweatt Chevrolet in nearby Pennsburg to look for a new car. Heimbach & Sweatt Chevrolet was a small old school Chevy Dealer in Pennsburg PA that sold more than their share of cool Chevy Muscle cars over the years as I've learned from my research of this now defunct old Dealership. The Cabot's arrived at Heimbach & Sweatt Chevy looking for a new Wagon for their growing family and after looking over everything in the lot, they decided to Special Order a very unusual 1978 Malibu Classic Wagon as nothing on the lot would meet Mrs Cabot's needs. According to Mr Cabot, his wife was a bit of a "tomboy" in her younger years and she drove a little Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite. He said that she really enjoyed driving the sporty little Bugeye with it's 4 speed manual transmission and so when it cane time to buy their new car, it was Mrs Cabot that would insist that the New Malibu Wagon be ordered with the largest V8 engine available and a 4 Speed Floor Shifted Manual Transmission. I really enjoyed talking with John Cabot and was very surprised when he told me that his wife was the one that actually decided how their new 1978 Malibu Wagon would be equipped. The Cabot's sat down with their salesman at Heimbach & Sweatt and ordered one of the most unusual 1978 Malibu Classic Wagons ever produced. I thought it was pretty darn cool that Mrs Cabot ordered the new 78 Malibu Wagon with the 305 V8 which was the largest engine available in the 1978 Malibu Wagon when optioned with a 4 Speed Manual Transmission. She also optioned the Wagon out with Full Instrumentation which I imagine was important to her after owning the Bugeye Sprite and she went with the Posi Rear, Rally Wheels, AM-FM Radio and of course Air Conditioning was a must. She ordered the Code "67" Saffron Poly Metallic Paint with the Optional Camel Sport Cloth interior which is far more comfortable than the standard all vinyl interior that was standard on these Wagons. The Cabot's ordered a very Special and nicely optioned 1978 Malibu Classic Wagon which I'm sure is a one-off car. Don't get me wrong, I am sure that Chevrolet built a few more 1978 Malibu Wagons with a 4 speed Manual Transmission but I wonder how many were actually ordered with the 305 V8 & the 4 Speed Manual Transmission and how many were ordered with so many cool options. The Cabot's took delivery of their new 1978 Malibu Classic Wagon on Thursday May 11, 1978 and the 4 Speed Malibu Wagon would serve the Cabot family well for nearly 8 years before they traded the Wagon in with just 68,000 Miles. John Cabot told me that he really liked the Malibu Wagon and that it was a great driving and very reliable car. I spent about 30 minutes on the phone with the John Cabot and was amazed that this very cool car came to be because of his wife. He made it absolutely clear that the only reason that the Malibu Wagon was ordered/optioned the way it is was because of Mrs Cabot who insisted on the 4 Speed! When I told Mr Cabot that his old Wagon was still around and in nice original condition, he was really surprised as he thought the car would be long gone after all these years. He was actually quite happy to hear from me and I told him that I would send him some photos of the car. After the Cabot's traded the Malibu Wagon at a local Dealership, the Malibu Wagon would be wholesaled to a small Dealer who would then sell the 1978 Malibu Wagon to it's second owner on Tuesday March 25, 1986. The second owner would take delivery of his cool 4 Speed Malibu Wagon with just 68,924 miles and he would drive the car for a year or so before he parked the car in his barn back in 1987 with just 70,000 miles showing on the odometer. The Wagon would continue to sit in the same place in the barn for 24 years before it was pulled out of storage and eventually sold to it's third owner. The third owner is a diehard GM classic car enthusiast and all around nice guy. He has a small collection of cool GM "G" body cars and the 1978 Malibu Wagon was purchased and added to his collection. The third owner went over all of the usual things associated with a car that's been in storage for 20+ years. He cleaned out to Fuel Tank and changed fuel lines as needed..... went over all of the brakes and replaced or rebuilt everything as needed..... he installed new KYB Gas Shocks on all 4 corners and replaced some front-end parts including new Sway Bar Links and bushings. He installed New Whitewall Radial Tires in the exact size as the originals according to the Original Owners Manual. He also did a wonderful job of cleaning up the engine compartment and cleaned or refinished everything under the hood. The engine compartment is very clean as is the transmission, bell-housing, drive-shaft and even the posi rear. The engine received a complete tune-up and all of the tune-up parts are original GM pieces except for the spark plug wires which were replaced with a new set of 8 mm wires. The engine still has correct GM Upper & Lower Radiator Hoses and Original style clamps and the same goes for the Heater Hoses. The front suspension was cleaned of any grease or dirt and looks nice and clean. After the Wagon was brought back to excellent running and driving condition, he decided to sell the Wagon as I believe he had another new toy coming and needed the garage space. It was then that I purchased the super cool 4 Speed Wagon. When I purchased the Wagon, I went over a few things such as having the Air Conditioning gone over by a Air Conditioning professional who went over the entire system and then evacuated the entire system and then filled the system with good old R12. That's right... real R12 that I was able to track down here on Ebay and now the Air Conditioning works just fine. I also had some Carburetor work done and some other tuning. I then sent the Wagon out to a local Auto Upholstery guy who installed a New Headliner and New Roof to Headliner Padding from front to back. He did a wonderful job and the Headliner looks great. I also purchased and installed the correct CHEVROLET emblem that is used on the Tailgate as these emblems are glued on from the factory and they often come loose. I just installed the correct emblem and then installed one of the small Hurst Equipped emblems under the Chevrolet emblem just because I thought it was a nice touch. I also did some detail work on the car in various areas including the interior which is very nice and very original but needed a little cleaning. The Wagon is a very good original car and is exceptionally solid and if your familiar with these 1978-1982 Malibu's then you know that they were prone to serious rust. This is not your usual 1978 Malibu Wagon... it's powered by the Optional 305 V8 engine, 4 Speed Manual Transmission, Posi Rear, Full Gauge Package, Cold AC, Rally Wheels, Power Disc Brakes and more..... most importantly, this is not a rusty car so keep this in mind as you read through the description and look through the pictures. It's just a good old Wagon and I don't think any of us will see another like it again! The 1978 Malibu Classic Wagon is a super cool car with it's Original 305 cubic inch V8 engine and Original 4 Speed Manual Transmission. The engine and transmission are both original to the car and both operate quite well. The 305 engine runs very well with plenty of power and the 4 speed transmission shifts easily with absolutely no problems. The Clutch is excellent and works flawlessly with absolutely no chatter or slipping. The Transmission is shifted with it's Original Hurst Shifter and it works great with a nice easy shift pattern. The Transmission has absolutely no unusual noises, no grinding, no popping out of gear... no problems or noises whatsoever! The Original 2.73 Positraction Rear still has it's Original Aluminum Tag on the back cover that's marked " USE LIMITED SLIP DIFF LUBE ONLY". There are absolutely no noises from the rear and the entire drive-train is really super quiet. This car drives very well and cruises down the road nicely. It's a really smooth cruising Wagon and is a true pleasure to drive. The Wagon is equipped with Power Steering and Power Front Disc Brakes and the steering is excellent and the Power Disc Brakes stop the Wagon very well. The car is also equipped with Air Conditioning which works well and keeps the Wagon nice and cool inside on those hot Summer days. The Wagon is equipped with the Optional Factory Gauge Package which is awesome for keeping an eye on the engines vitals such as Oil Pressure, Water Temperature and Voltage. Absolutely everything in this Wagon works as it did when it was new except for the Clock which seems to be fairly typical. The Original AM-FM Radio works just fine. The Headlights, Low & High Beams, Dash Lights, Parking Lights, Rear Quarter Marker Lights, License Plate Lights, Reverse Lights, Turn Signals, Brake Lights, Interior under Dash Courtesy Lights, Interior Dome Light, Windshield Wipers, Horn, Speedometer, Odometer, Oil Pressure Gauge, Temperature Gauge, Gas Gauge, Parking Brake.....ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING WORKS EXCEPT THE CLOCK!!! The Instrument Cluster is nice and clean and lights up nicely in the evening with the parking lights or headlights on. The Instruments show nicely and all of the Gauges work as they should including the Speedometer & Odometer, Gas Gauge, Oil Pressure Gauge, Temperature Gauge, Voltage/Battery Gauge ..... just a nice clean Optional Gauge Package that works as it should. The engine holds good Oil Pressure with approximately 50 lbs. of Oil Pressure when the engine is cold and a fairly consistent 25-30 lbs. of Oil Pressure once it's warmed up. The Water Temperature seems to vary depending on weather conditions and whether your running the air conditioning. The car has never overheated on me and has never run higher than 210 degrees on a 90+ degree Summer day with the Air Conditioning running while driving in City traffic. The car is optioned with the heavy duty cooling package which includes the heavy duty radiator, clutch fan and the factory fan shroud. The Engine Compartment is very clean and nicely detailed. There have been no alterations to this car since it left Chevrolet's Doraville Georgia Assembly Plant back in the second week of April 1978. This Wagon is very original! The Body on this 1978 Malibu Wagon is in good shape and appears to be wearing most of it's Original Factory applied Code "67" Saffron Metallic Paint. When I spoke with the original owner, he told me that the car was never in an accident and that it never had any paint or body work during the 8 years that he owned the car. I looked the paint over and it looks as though most of the paint is original although there may have been a few panels that were painted very early in the cars life. I could be wrong but maybe the car had a couple of panels repainted before the original owner took delivery of the car back in May of 1978. I just can't say for sure. The body on the Malibu Wagon is very solid and straight. The Wagon has never had any type of rust repair and the body is very solid. There is no exterior rust showing on the car and the lower rockers and lower quarters are nice and solid as are the original floor pans and the frame. The rear frame rails on these cars are notorious for rust issues but this car has a nice solid original undercarriage with no issues outside of some surface rust from the bare metal being exposed to the elements. It's very solid. The Wagon has all of it's original exterior trim including the Grill, Bumpers, Taillights, Roof Rack, Door Handles, Body Side Moldings, Window Moldings, etc etc. The Original Front Bumper is really nice as is the original Grill and Parking Light Assemblies. The Rear Bumper is clean and straight. The car has nice Glass throughout with no problems. The Original Body Side Moldings are in place and are the factory glue on moldings so they could be easily removed if you don't like them. These Moldings would often come off of these cars in the Summer months when the glue would get hot and the moldings in turn would literally fall off. The Drivers side Door Side Body Molding did just that and was put back on the car although it could have been installed a little straighter. This is not a big issue as I would imagine that some of you might consider removing these moldings. I am not a big fan of these moldings. The Paint on the Wagon appears to be original although it may have had a few panels repainted at some point. The Paint on the car is original with it's share of nicks, rock chips and various areas where the paint has some fading or staining. There are spots that have been touched up because of chips or checking. The car would benefit from a fresh coat of the Original Saffron Metallic Paint at some point as the original paint is showing it's age. These cars The Wagon is a very cool car and very unusual with it's factory 305 V8 and the Factory 4 Speed Manual Transmission and Factory Air Conditioning and it's very well documented with much of the original paperwork which is shown below. Overall this is a good solid car and the only thing that I see as far as rust goes is a little on the inner seam of the rear lower corner of the drivers side door. It's a small area, maybe 2-3" and it's minor stuff. This is not a big deal and it does not need a door or even a patch panel for that matter but it should be tended to before it becomes a problem. The other doors look good along the inner seams and the body has nice crisp metal all along the lower sections of the car. The Doors all open and close fine and lock and unlock with the keys. The Windows roll up and down just fine and the back door wing type windows open and close as they should. The Tailgate is in great shape with no rust and opens and closes just fine. The Struts still hold the rear window in place but they are a little tired but they can be bought on ebay for $20 per pair with free shipping. One of the main issues with these 1978-1982 Malibu Wagons are frame problems and especially on the rear section of the frame where the Bumpers Bolt up and where the Body to Frame Mount Bushings keep the body secured to the Frame. These areas are in great shape with no problems.... quite solid and clean... even the little push in style 5 mph bumper shocks that are made to take a minor bump without damaging the car or the passengers are in good shape with no rust problems. I have added pictures of the frame and the floor pans so you can check them out below where I have many pictures of the car... scroll down for many pictures! The Optional Camel Sport Cloth interior in this 1978 Malibu Wagon is in very good original condition. The Seats have a nice clean appearance with no rips or tears and the original seat cushions & springs are still very good with no sagging when you sit in the seats. Keep in mind that most of the miles driven in this car were with a small adult woman behind the wheel thus saving the interior from any serious wear or abuse. The Original coloring in the Camel Sport Cloth interior is still very nice and has a nice clean look from the Seat Covers to the Door Panels. The Original Dash Pad is exceptionally nice with wonderful original color and grain with absolutely no cracks or warping. The Instrument Cluster with the Optional Gauge Package is in very nice condition with nice crisp color on the Gauge faces and nice crisp color on the Gauge Numbers and Needles. Absolutely everything in this car works except for the Clock which can be repaired if you choose to do so or you can swap it out for the Tach/Clock combination which were my intentions. The Original Door Panels show nicely with Clean Original Armrest with no cracking or damage. The Sport Cloth inserts in the Door Panels look great and the original Carpeted lower section of the Door Panels are still very nice. The Headliner was recently replaced as was the original padding that goes between the roof and the headliner. The Headliner was done professionally and looks beautiful from the windshield all the way back to the tailgate. The Original Carpeting is still in good condition although there is a spot on the passenger side front that shows some wear but the car has all 4 of it's original Floor Mats and you really can't see this minor carpet issue. It's not something that I'd even worry about, in fact, I don't think I'd even touch it. The Original Carpeted areas on the backside of the Folding Rear Seat are in good condition although they could stand a little cleaning and the Original Removable Cargo Area Carpeting which is usually long gone from these cars, is still in place with some wear but still completely intact. The Cargo area Carpet may have been an option but I'm not 100% sure. The reason I say it might have been optional is because I have never seen another 1978 Malibu Classic Wagon that had the Cargo area Removable Snap-On Carpet. The Rear Cargo Area Carpet has several snaps in the section closest to the tailgate that hold the rear carpet in place. The Cargo Area is painted underneath the Carpet in the Factory Original Tan/Camel Paint and the Original Spare Tire Well is located under the Floor in the Rear of the Cargo area. This Spare Tire Well has a Door that opens and locks in place with the factory prop-rod for easy removal of the Original BF Goodrich Space Saver Spare Tire. The Original BF Goodrich Space Saver Spare Tire is still in place along with it's Original Inflator bottle and the complete original Bumper Jack. The Plastic Interior trim that surrounds the headliner and covers the "A" Pillars and surrounds most of the interior around the Cargo area are all in good shape with the exception of one piece that has a crack but it's something that's an easy fix. This Trim has really nice original color and shows very little wear. The Interior has all of it's Original Deluxe Lap-Shoulder Seat Belts and they are in good condition. The Original Sun Visor Mounted Cardboard Seat Belt Instructions are still with the car which is pretty cool considering it was made out of paper and most were thrown away when these cars were new. The Malibu Wagons Windows Roll Up & Down easily and the Rear Door Wing/Vent Windows work just as they should. The Doors Lock and Unlock with the Original Keys and the Original Tailgate works just as it should with the Rear Window going upward while the Tailgate drops down. The Locking mechanism for the Tailgate and Rear Window work as they should. The interior and everything inside the car has held up quite well over the last 35 years and especially considering that it was sold new in spent most of it's life here in Pennsylvania. This is just a good old car and one that is rarely seen anywhere! The original 305 engine starts easily and runs very well. The engine blows a little puff of smoke when first started cold but it goes away immediately and runs very well. The engine maintains good oil pressure and runs strong. There are no unusual noises and the engine runs nice and smooth and has never overheated. The engine sounds good and runs great while accelerating nicely through all of the gears. The engine always starts even on the hottest of days when the engine is already nice and hot.... and there are no problems outside of the Choke not operating properly. It will need a new Idle Stop Solenoid which is a $15 part and does not create any problems but I wanted to mention this since I just realized that it needed replacing the other day. The engine compartment is nice and clean and everything in the engine compartment has been cleaned and gone over to insure good working condition. The engine is super clean as the pictures will show with correct NOS GM Upper & Lower Radiator Hoses. The Original AC Fuel Pump has been removed and cleaned then installed looking quite nice. The engine was very carefully detailed with the engine in the car and it's not only painted nicely but the exhaust manifolds were sanded to bare metal repainted and the original Cylinder Head to Exhaust Manifold Heat Shields look new. The Original Alternator was cleaned and looks great. All of the Heater & Radiator Hoses were replaced. All of the Original Vacuum Lines were checked and cleaned and all are in very good shape and work properly. The Complete original air cleaner with the fresh air duct is in great shape. All of the original Air Conditioning parts are nice and clean and in excellent condition. The Heater/Air Conditioning Box is very clean with the factory decal still in place. The AC Lines, Condensor, AC Dryer/Receiver are all very nice. The Air Conditioning Compressor works fine and looks nice with it's original decal in place. Even the Original Steel Motor Mounts for the insulators were cleaned to bare metal and repainted. There was quite a bit of time that went into cleaning and detailing the engine and engine compartment with attention paid to making sure that everything not only looked good but that everything functioned properly as well. The engine received a complete tune-up and runs great. The engine received all new tune-up parts from new Spark Plus, New 8mm Plug Wires, New Distributor Cap, New Air Filter and Fuel Filter and more. The car runs great and goes down the highway nicely at 65 mph with absolutely no unusual vibrations and with excellent steering. I have driven the Wagon around town and on the Highway and it runs and drives quite nicely. The Malibu Wagon drives really nice with an excellent ride for a midsize car...in fact I owned a 1979 Dodge Aspen Sport Wagon with the factory bucket seats and floor console with the cool factory wheel flares and spoilers... great car but it didn't ride nearly as nice as this Malibu Wagon. Just a nice driving car! This is a very cool and extremely Original 1978 Malibu Classic Wagon in it's Original Saffron Metallic Paint and it's Original Camel Sport Cloth interior. This Wagon is Super Unusual and I dare to say, quite Rare! It is equipped with the Factory Original 305 cubic inch V8 engine and it's Original Special Order 4 Speed Manual Transmission or a 4 On The Floor and a Posi Rear!!! Is this a 1978 Vintage Muscle car or a Family Wagon? You decide... remember it was 1978! The car also has Factory Original Power Steering and Power Disc Brakes, Optional Sport Cloth Interior, Full Gauge Package, Rally Wheels, Cold Air Conditioning, Tinted Glass, AM-FM Radio, Door Edge Guards, Roof Rack, Factory Floor Mats, Heavy Duty Cooling, Delay Windshield Wipers, Deluxe Seat Belts, Body Side Moldings and more! This is a well DOCUMENTED car with great Owner History and 70,504 Original Miles. The car is super solid and runs and drives great! Grabbing Gears in your Malibu 4 Speed Wagon with the Air Conditioning on is pretty darn cool!!! I have owned my share of Factory 4 Speed Wagons over the years but this is really cool with all of the awesome options. Don't miss this one guys. It can be bought for the price of a rusted out 1965 Mustang Fastback project with no engine, lol lol. This car needs nothing to be driven now although I've only driven it about 150 miles since I've had it. I have another toy coming so this one has to go. You will like this very cool 78 Malibu 305 4 Speed AC Disc Brake Gauges Wagon!!! I recommend that you come and see the Wagon in person if your able as there is no better way to know exactly what your bidding on than coming to inspect the car in person. If your not able to come and see the car in person then your welcome to have a friend come and check the car out for you or you can always hire a Classic Car Inspection Service to look the car over for you. ABOVE: THIS PICTURE SHOWS THE OUTER LEFT HAND CORNER OF THE DASH PAD AND A PILLAR TRIM, INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HOUSING, STEERING WHEEL AND THE ORIGINAL 4 SPEED SHIFTER... ALL IN NICE ORIGINAL CONDITION! THE ORIGINAL PARKING BRAKE WORKS PERFECTLY WHICH IS IMPORTANT IN ANY MANUAL TRANSMISSION CAR AND THE UNDER DASH HOOD RELEASE WORKS PERFECTLY!ABOVE: A PICTURE SHOWING THE 4 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLOOR SHIFTER HOUSING AND ORIGINAL CHROME SHIFT BOOT RETAINER ALONG WITH THE SHIFTER BOOT AND CHROME HURST 4 SPEED SHIFTER ALONG WITH THE LOWER SECTION OF THE DASH, FRONT SEAT BOTTOM AND THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT DOOR PANEL. THE LOWER PART OF THE "A" PILLAR MOLDING HAS A FEW SCRATCHES FROM THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE INSPECTION TECHNICIANS WHO CAN BE CARELESS WHEN INSTALLING AND REMOVING OUR YEARLY STATE SAFETY INSPECTION STICKERS. THESE ARE JUST A COUPLE OF SCRATCHES ON THE MOLDING AND NO BIG DEAL AS THEY CAN BE PAINTED OR DYED AND LOOK AS NEW AGAIN.ABOVE: THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SHOWS NICELY WITH A NICE CLEAN LENSE AND CRISP COLORING ON THE GAUGESABOVE: THE CENTER SECTION OF THE DASH PAD ABOVE THE HEATER/AIR CONDITIONING VENTS AND AT THE FRONT DASH MOUNTED SPEAKER AREA IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON AREAS FOR THESE DASH PADS TO CRACK AND AS YOU CAN SEE THIS ONE IS BEAUTIFUL!! NICE CLEAN DOOR JAMS AND NICE ORIGINAL INTERIORABOVE: THE REAR SEAT FOLDED DOWN TO MAKE THE LARGE CARGO AREA EVEN BIGGER. THIS IS SHOWN FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR DOOR.... NICE CLEAN ORIGINAL INTERIORABOVE: THE PASSENGER SIDE DOORS OPEN SHOW THE NICE ORIGINAL DOOR JAMBS ALONG WITH THE NICE ORIGINAL DOOR PANELSABOVE: THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT DOOR PANEL SHOWS NICE AND CLEAN WITH GOOD ORIGINAL COLOR AND NICE LOWER CARPET.. THESE PANELS ARE PRONE TO CRACKING BUT NO PROBLEMS WITH THESE PANELS!ABOVE: THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR DOOR SHOWS THE NICE ORIGINAL DOOR PANEL WITH CLEAN ORIGINAL LOWER CARPETING AND GOOD COLORABOVE: THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT DOOR OPEN SHOWS THE NICE ORIGINAL DOOR PANEL WITH NICE LOWER CARPET & GOOD COLOR.. NO CRACKS IN THE UPPER PART OF THE DOOR PANELS LIKE SO MANY OF THESE CARSABOVE: THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR DOOR PANEL SHOWS NICE ORIGINAL COLOR, NO CRACKING, GREAT LOWER CARPET, NICE PANELS!!!ABOVE: THE CARGO AREA IS QUITE LARGE WITH THE REAR SEAT FOLDED DOWN. THE CARGO AREA STILL HAS IT'S ORIGINAL SNAP DOWN REAR CARPET WHICH IS EASILY REMOVED TO REVEAL THE FACTORY PAINTED CARGO FLOOR. MOST TIMES, THESE CARPETED AREAS ARE LONG GONE AND JUST THE METAL PAINTED FLOOR IS LEFT AND THEY ARE USUALLY REPAINTED OR COVERED IN SOME OTHER INCORRECT MATERIAL. THE INTERIOR IN THIS MALIBU WAGON IS COMPLETELY ORIGINAL WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE NEW HEADLINER WHICH WAS REPLACED FROM THE UNDER PADDING TO THE COMPLETE NEW HEADLINER MATERIAL. IT WAS DONE RIGHT AND LOOKS GREAT! THE REAR CARPETS SHOW SOME WEAR BUT THEY CAN BE EASILY REPLACED IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO SO, I LIKE IT JUST THE WAY IT IS.. CLEAN ORIGINAL!ABOVE: THE NEW HEADLINER FROM THE REAR TO THE FRONT SHOWS BEAUTIFULLY AND THE ORIGINAL CARGO AREA PLASTIC SIDE TRIM STILL SHOWS NICELY WITH LITTLE WEAR AND DISCOLORATION.... VERY NICE ORIGINAL OVERALLABOVE: THE HEADLINER IS NEW AND DONE CORRECTLY WITH THE STEP DOWN AREA JUST BEHIND THE SECOND BACK SEAT...NICE CLEAN ORIGINAL INTERIOR IN A WAGON IS A HUGE BONUS AS THEY CAN BE VERY EXPENSIVE TO RESTORE AND ESPECIALLY IF IT'S A CLOTH INTERIOR LIKE THE OPTIONAL CAMEL SPORT CLOTH IN THIS 4 SPEED WAGON. YOU CAN EASILY SPEND $5000 TO PROPERLY RESTORE THE FRONT & REAR SEATS ALONG WITH THE 4 DOOR PANELS IN ONE OF THESE CARS. I SPOKE WITH THE OWNER OF A 1960 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE WAGON A COUPLE OF YEARS BACK AND HE SPENT OVER $11,000 ON THE RESTORATION OF HIS INTERIOR. IT ADDS UP QUICKLY AND ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE A CAR WITH AN INTERIOR THAT'S NOT BEING REPRODUCED. THIS 1978 MALIBU WAGON HAS A PRETTY CLEAN ORIGINAL INTERIOR.ABOVE: THE HEADLINER AND INTERIOR SIDE TRIM SHOWS VERY WELL. THE BACK SEAT UNLOCKS EASILY WITH THE BLACK HANDLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEAT AS SHOWN IN THIS PHOTO.ABOVE: THE REAR CARGO AREA SIDE TRIM AND D PILLAR INTERIOR TRIM IS IN GREAT SHAPE WITH NICE ORIGINAL COLOR OVERALL....LIMITED FADING. THE PLASTIC INTERIOR TAILGATE COVER SHOWS SOME SCRATCHES AND DISCOLORATION ALTHOUGH IT'S NOT BAD AND CAN EASILY BE PAINTED IN THE CORRECT COLOR WITH INTERIOR VINYL PAINT... THE STUFF IS AMAZING AND WILL MAKE THIS PANEL LOOK NEW! THIS IS THE ONE PANEL ON THE INTERIOR THAT SHOWS ANY REAL WEAR AND IT'S BECAUSE IT'S ON THE LOWER SECTION OF THE TAILGATE WHERE THE ORIGINAL OWNERS LIKELY LOADED GROCERIES AND THEIR CHILDREN. WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, IT'S ACTUALLY AMAZING THAT THIS INTERIOR IS AS NICE AS IT IS CONSIDERING IT WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED AS A FAMILY CAR BUT I HAVE A STRONG SUSPICION THAT THE CAR NEVER GOT USED VERY HARD AND IT WAS DRIVEN BY MRS CABOT MOST OF THE TIME!\ABOVE: THE TAILGATE FOLDED DOWN AND THE GLASS UP. THERE CARGO AREA IS IN GOOD SHAPE WITH THE ONLY PIECE SHOWING ANY AGE OR USE BEING THE TAILGATE INTERIOR PANEL COVER. IT'S MADE OF A PLASTIC THAT GETS SCRATCHED, GOUGED AND DISCOLORED. THIS WOULD LOOK AWESOME WITH A LITTLE OF THE CORRECT INTERIOR TRIM PAINT .... I'VE USED SOME OF THIS VINYL/INTERIOR TRIM PAINT AND IT WORKS GREAT. THE CARGO CARPET IS STILL IN PLACE WHICH IS AMAZING AS THEY ARE EITHER LONG GONE OR NEVER HAD THEM. I BELIEVE THE CARGO AREA CARPETING MAY HAVE BEEN OPTIONALABOVE: THE TRAP DOOR AT THE REAR OF THE CARGO AREA FLOOR SHOWS THE ORIGINAL JACKING INSTRUCTIONS & STORAGE INSTRUCTIONSABOVE: OPTIONAL FULL-SIZE SPACE SAVER SPARE COMPLETE WITH ORIGINAL UNUSED FILLER BOTTLE AND COMPLETE ORIGINAL JACK! THE SPARE TIRE WELL IS COMPLETELY RUST FREE!ABOVE: THE SPARE TIRE WELL LOCATED UNDER THE REAR CARGO AREA FLOOR. IT'S JUST FACTORY ORIGINAL AND I DIDN'T CLEAN OR PAINT ANYTHING... JUST LEFT IT ORIGINAL TO SHOW THERE IS NO RUST. IT DOESN'T LOOK AS THOUGH ANYONE EVER TOUCHED ANYTHING EXCEPT TO REMOVE THE SPARE TO INSPECT FOR RUST ... THERE IS NO RUST AND THIS WOULD LOOK NICE WITH A FRESH COAT OF PAINT, ABOVE: THE TAILGATE WITH THE CORRECT CHEVROLET EMBLEM AND A HURST EQUIPPED EMBLEM BELOW. THE SAFFRON METALLIC PAINT IS REALLY A COOL COLOR.... KINDA OF A BURGUNDY AND A BURNT ORANGE MIX DEPENDING ON THE LIGHTINGABOVE: THE DRIVERS SIDE SHOWS NICELY WITH THE FACTORY 14X6" RALLY WHEELS AND THE CAR HAS A VERY ORIGINAL OVERALL APPEARANCE. THIS WAGON IS SUPER UNUSUAL AND FAIRLY RARE. I KNOW THAT CHEVROLET MADE A FEW OF THESE 4 SPEED EQUIPPED WAGONS BUT I DOUBT THAT VERY MANY WERE AIR CONDITIONING CARS WITH THE 305 V8 ENGINE AND EVEN FEWER WOULD HAVE COME THROUGH WITH THE RALLY GAUGES, RALLY WHEELS, POWER STEERING AND POWER DISC BRAKES, AM-FM RADIO, HEAVY DUTY COOLING, DOOR EDGE GUARDS, FACTORY FLOOR MATS, BODY SIDE MOLDINGS, ROOF RACK, TINTED GLASS, DELAY WINDSHIELD WIPERS AND MORE! THIS IS PROBABLY ONE OF ONE IN IT'S UNUSUAL COMBINATION AND LIKELY ONE OF JUST A COUPLE OF DOZEN 4 SPEED V8 WAGONS FOR 1978. THESE WERE MADE 35 YEARS AGO SO FINDING AN ORIGINAL 70,000 V8 4 SPEED AIR CONDITIONED WAGON WITH A NICE BODY AND ORIGINAL DOCUMENTATION..ORIGINAL PAINT... WELL, ITS PRETTY COOL AND IT'S UNLIKELY THAT WE WILL SEE ANOTHER ONE ABOVE: THE FRONT OF THE MALIBU CLASSIC WAGON SHOWS IT'S NICE ORIGINAL GRILL, FRONT BUMPER TO BODY FILLER & NICE BUMPER! THE FRONT PARKING LIGHTS WORKING AS THEY SHOULD... JUST A GOOD ORIGINAL CAR WITH NICE ORIGINAL LINES!ABOVE: THE FRONT BUMPER SHOWS NICELY AND IS ORIGINAL.. ORIGINAL BUMPER TO GRILL FILLER PANEL THAT IS ALWAYS MISSING OR BROKEN IS IN GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION. ABOVE: THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT FENDER AND HOOD SHOW NICELY WITH ORIGINAL RALLY WHEELS!ABOVE: THE FRONT OF THE MALIBU SHOWS NICELY WITH A CLEAN ORIGINAL GRILL... ORIGINAL PARKING LIGHTS WORKING AS THEY SHOULD. THE HEADER PANEL AND HOOD ARE NICE.... JUST A GOOD UNRESTORED ORIGINAL 70,000 MILE FACTORY V8 4 SPEED WAGON!!!ABOVE: THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT SHOWS THE NICE STRAIGHT BODY FROM FRONT TO BACKABOVE: THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT FENDER ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE REAR SHOWS NICE AND STRAIGHT. THERE IS A LITTLE DING ON THE FENDER. THE OPTIONAL BODY SIDE MOLDING ON THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR WAS GLUED BACK ON AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN INSTALLED A LITTLE STRAIGHTER BUT IT'S NO BIG DEAL... THESE ARE THE OPTIONAL FACTORY BODY SIDE MOLDINGS AND THEY ARE EASY TO REMOVE AND TO GLUE ON IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO STRAIGHTEN IT OUT. PERSONALLY, I DON'T CARE MUCH FOR THESE MOLDINGS BUT THEY ARE ORIGINALABOVE: THE ROOF AND ROOF RACK SHOWN FROM THE REAR ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. THE ROOF RACK IS IN NICE ORIGINAL CONDITION AND THE SAME GOES FOR THE ROOF. I DON'T BELIEVE THE ROOF RACK WAS EVER USED.ABOVE: THE 1978 MALIBU WAGON SHOWN FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE LOOKING VERY SHARP WITH THE ORIGINAL RALLY WHEELSABOVE: THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE 78 MALIBU 4 SPEED WAGON SHOWS NICELYABOVE: THE DRIVERS SIDE SHOWS NICELY FROM FRONT TO REAR. THE ORIGINAL LOWER QUARTER PANEL MOUNTED SIDE MARKER LIGHTS WORK AS THEY SHOULD AS YOU CAN SEE. THE WAGON HAS THE OPTIONAL 14X6" RALLY WHEELS WHICH HAVE BEEN ON THE CAR SINCE NEW WITH BRAND NEW WHITEWALL RADIAL TIRES MOUNTED ALL AROUND. THE ONLY ISSUE HERE IS THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR BODY SIDE MOLDING WHICH ARE GLUED ON FROM THE FACTORY AND THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS CAN HEAT UP AND BREAK THE GLUE DOWN AND THE RESULT IS THE SIDE MOLDINGS EITHER COMING LOOSE OR THEY CAN FALL OFF COMPLETELY. THE MOLDING ON THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR DID JUST THAT AND WAS GLUED BACK ON BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER BUT HE DIDN'T GET IT PERFECTLY STRAIGHT BUT IT'S AN EASY FIX AS YOU SIMPLY HEAT THE GLUE WITH A HEAT GUN OR LET THE CAR SIT IN THE HOT SUMMER SUN AND THE MOLDING SHOULD COME OFF EASILY. IT SHOULD BE PUT BACK ON A LITTLE MORE STRAIGHT THAT IT IS RIGHT NOW. THIS IS NOT A BIG DEAL BUT IT BOTHERS ME....IN FACT I DON'T LIKE THE OPTIONAL GLUE ON FACTORY BODY SIDE MOLDINGS AND PLANNED TO REMOVE THEM ALL AND EVENTUALLY HAVE THE CAR REPAINTED.ABOVE: THIS PICTURE SHOWS THE WORKING FACTORY REVERSE LIGHTS WHICH ARE OFTEN INOPERABLE IN CARS WITH 4 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH MANY PEOPLE UNHOOK THE WIRING OR REMOVE IT COMPLETELY WHEN THEY EITHER INSTALL A NEW CLUTCH OR DO ANY TYPE OF SHIFTER WORK. THEY UNHOOK OR REMOVE THE WIRING FOR THE REVERSE LIGHTS AND NEVER HOOK THEM BACK UP. I'VE NEVER QUITE UNDERSTOOD THIS BUT HAVE SEEN IT MANY TIMES OVER THE LAST 35 YEARS. I WANTED YOU TO SEE THAT THE RESERVE LIGHTS WERE WORKING PROPERLY SO I TURNED THE KEY ON WITHOUT STARTING THE CAR AND THEN SIMPLY PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO REVERSE GEAR AND AS YOU CAN SEE, THE LIGHTS WORK PERFECTLY AND THEY ARE QUITE HELPFUL AT NIGHT WHEN YOUR TRYING TO BACK THE CAR INTO A DARK AREA... THEY CAN LIGHT UP THE AREA BEHIND THE CAR VERY WELL. THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN BEFORE I INSTALLED THE CORRECT ORIGINAL "CHEVROLET" EMBLEM IN THE UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE TAILGATE. THE EMBLEM IS NOW IN PLACE AND LOOKS GOOD!!! ABOVE: THE ORIGINAL REAR BUMPER IS STILL IN GOOD SHAPE..NICE AND STRAIGHT AND THE TAILGATE IS AS SOLID AS A ROCK.... THE TAILLIGHTS WORK AS THEY SHOULD AS DOES THE ORIGINAL LICENSE PLATE LIGHT... YOU CAN SEE THE LITTLE HURST EQUIPPED EMBLEM ON THE RIGHT AND THE CHEVROLET GLUE ON EMBLEM HAS SINCE BEEN PUT BACK ON THE TAILGATE. THERE ARE SOME TOUCH-UPS IN THE PAINT BUT IT'S ORIGINAL 35 YEAR OLD PAINT AND THE QUALITY CONTROL AT GM DURING THE LATE 70'S WAS AWFUL SO ABOVE: THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT IS VERY ORIGINAL AND VERY CLEAN WITH ALL CORRECT AND ORIGINAL PARTS IN GOOD CONDITIONABOVE: THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT SHOWN FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE SHOWS THE ORIGINAL GM HEATER HOSES WITH ORIGINAL HOSE CLAMPS AND THE NICE CLEAN ORIGINAL AIR CONDITIONING LINES. THE WINDSHIELD WASHER BOTTLE IS NICE AND CLEANABOVE: THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT IS CLEAN FROM FRONT TO BACK AND SIDE TO SIDE. NOTICE THE ORIGINAL BLUE PLASTIC COVER THAT GOES OVER THE STEERING SHAFT AND KEEPS THE STEERING RAG JOINT FREE OF ANY ROAD GRIMEABOVE: THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT IS NICE AND CLEAN AND EXTREMELY ORIGINALABOVE: THIS PICTURE WOULD HAVE LOOKED GREAT IF I WOULD HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO WIPE DOWN THE BLOWER MOTOR HOUSING AS IT WAS COVERED IN DUST WHEN I TOOK THE PICTURE. THE ORIGINAL FINISH ON THE HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING BOX ALONG WITH THE BLOWER MOTOR BOX ARE IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION AND EVERYTHING WORKS GREAT BUT I SHOULD HAVE WIPED THIS OFF TO SHOW JUST HOW NICE IT IS. THE AIR CONDITIONING DRIER AND LINES ARE SUPER NICE AND IF YOU TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK CLOSELY AT ALL OF THE LITTLE PARTS THEN YOU'LL SEE JUST HOW NICE EVERYTHING IS IN THIS ENGINE COMPARTMENT.ABOVE: EVERYTHING FROM THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS TO THE ORIGINAL HEAT SHIELDS HAVE BEEN CLEANED AND REPAINTED. THE ORIGINAL AC FUEL PUMP IS NICE AND CLEAN AS IS THE ORIGINAL ALTERNATOR.. ALL FACTORY ORIGINAL PARTS ARE INTACT AND IN GOOD OPERATING CONDITION.ABOVE: THE PASSENGER SIDE EXHAUST MANIFOLD WITH THE ORIGINAL HEAT SHIELDS AND THE HEAT TUBE ARE ALL EXCELLENT!ABOVE: NEW CORRECT UPPER AND LOWER GM RADIATOR HOSES WERE INSTALLED ALONG WITH THE ORIGINAL HOSE CLAMPSABOVE: THE ORIGINAL COWL TAG WAS DIFFICULT TO PHOTOGRAPH BUT YOU CAN SEE THE IMPORTANT CODES SUCH AS THE 62E CAMEL SPORT CLOTH INTERIOR A52 FOR THE BENCH SEAT... 67L FOR THE SAFFRON METALLIC LOWER BODY PAINT & 67U FOR THE SAFFRON METALLIC UPPER BODY PAINT .... 04B IS THE BUILD DATE OF 04= APRIL B= 2ND WEEK OR THE 2ND WEEK OF APRIL 1978 ... THESE TWO BROCHURES ARE QUITE INTERESTING TO READ AS THERE WERE MANY COOL PAINT AND INTERIOR COMBINATIONS AVAILABLE WHICH I HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. THIS IS ALSO COOL ORIGINAL PAPERWORK TO SHOW WITH THE 1978 MALIBU 4 SPEED WAGON WHICH IS FAR MORE RARE THAN MOST 1978 CHEVY'S INCLUDING JUST ABOUT ANY 1978 CAMARO Z28. ALL OF THIS PAPERWORK WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE IF THE NEW OWNER SHOULD WANT TO TAKE THE WAGON TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND START SHOWING THE CAR!ABOVE: THE 1978 CHEVROLET INTERIOR BROCHURE SHOWS THE MANY COOL CLOTH INTERIOR OPTIONS THAT WERE OFFERED ON THE ENTIRE CHEVROLET PASSENGER CAR LINE. THIS IS EXACTLY HOW THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS WAGON WOULD HAVE DECIDED ON AN INTERIOR FOR THE NEW 1978 MALIBU CLASSIC WAGON THAT WAS SPECIAL ORDERED WITH THE CAMEL SPORT CLOTH INTERIOR WHICH IS SHOWN ON THE LOWER LINE MARKED "SPORT CLOTH (E) CAMEL. THIS IS A SUPER COOL INTERIOR AND IS STILL QUITE NICE AFTER 35 YEARS ABOVE: THIS IS AN ORIGINAL 1978 MALIBU CLASSIC WAGON POST CARD WHICH WAS A COMMON WAY TO MARKET NEW CARS BACK IN THE DAY. I'M NOT SO SURE THAT ANY OF THE AUTO MANUFACTURERS TODAY STILL USE POST CARDS TO ADVERTISE THEIR NEW CARS AS THEY HAD FOR MANY YEARS. IT'S JUST ANOTHER COOL PIECE OF ORIGINAL 1978 CHEVROLET ADVERTISING SHOWING THE NEW MALIBU WAGONABOVE: HERE IS ANOTHER 1978 CHEVROLET MALIBU SALES BROCHURE SHOWING THE NEW MALIBU SPORT COUPEABOVE: THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY PAPERWORK FOR THE NEW CHEVROLET MALIBU WAGON WITH THE ORIGINAL OWNERS NAME, ADDRESS AND THE WAGONS VIN NUMBER AND THE DATE OF DELIVERY 5/11/78... THIS DEALER WAS A SMALL TOWN DEALERSHIP THAT SOLD MANY COOL CHEVY MUSCLE CARS BACK IN THE 60'S AND 70'S AND UNFORTUNATELY THEY ARE NO LONGER IN BUSINESS LIKE SO MANY OTHER SMALL DEALERSHIPS THAT HAVE CLOSED IN THE LAST 10 YEARS! ABOVE: THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY SHEET VIN DECALS WHICH WERE USED ANY TIME THAT WARRANTY WORK WAS PERFORMED ON A NEW CHEVROLET VEHICLE FROM THIS ERA. AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE ARE ONLY 2 OF THE DECALS MISSING AND ONE OF THOSE IS ON THE FRONT OF THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY PAMPHLET. I THINK IT'S SAFE TO SAY THAT THIS 1978 MALIBU WAGON HAD LITTLE IF ANY WORK DONE UNDER WARRANTY. THE ORIGINAL OWNER TOLD ME THAT THIS MALIBU WAGON WAS A GREAT CAR FOR THE 7+ YEARS THAT HE AND HIS WIFE HAD THE CAR! ABOVE: THE ORIGINAL 1978 MALIBU WAGON CONSUMER INFORMATION PAMPHLET THAT WAS GIVEN TO THE ORIGINAL OWNER AT THE TIME THAT HE TOOK POSSESSION OF THE NEW WAGON. ABOVE: THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN WHILE I WAS DRIVING UP I-95 AND AS YOU CAN SEE, I WAS TRAVELING AT 70 MPH WHEN THE PICTURE WAS TAKEN. THIS WAS A VERY HOT NIGHT AND THE AIR CONDITIONING WAS RUNNING AND THE ENGINE STILL HAD 30-35 LBS OF OIL PRESSURE AND WAS RUNNING AT 200 DEGREES. On Jul-02-13 at 18:52:36 PDT, seller added the following information: Thanks for all of your emails, phone calls and especially your bids! I think we all know that our chances of seeing another car like this are slim to none. I have been around the old car hobby for over 35 years and have always been a Wagon fan and finding Factory 4 Speed Wagons is a serious Rarity! I have owned about 10 Factory 4 Speed Wagons over the last 35 years and no two were the same model and every one that I've owned was super unique with an interesting history. This Malibu Wagon is no different although it is optioned better than all of the other 4 Speed Wagons that I was lucky enough to own. This car is surely one of a kind with it's color combination and with it's options... the biggest options being the V8 with the 4 Speed Manual Transmission and the Air Conditioning. It's also extremely rare to find a Wagon with the Factory Gauge Package.... very cool for sure!!! I found out that the Hurst Shifter is also an option on these cars... go figure!!! Another cool option to add to the list. This Wagon runs well and the 4 Speed Transmission is quiet and shifts flawlessly. The Clutch is perfect and works as new. The car has recent Brake work, New Shocks, Brand New Tires, NOS GM Upper & Lower Radiator Hoses, New Heater Hoses, New Battery, New Tune-Up Parts including a New set of 8mm Spark Plug Wires, New Spark Plugs, New Distributor Cap, Carburetor Rebuild, New Front Sway Bar Links and New Bushings and more. This is a very good original car with mostly original paint and the paint is tired. The Paint on GM cars during the late 70's was absolutely terrible and many of these cars would have problems with the paint starting to peel because of the lousy primers that were used. That's the one thing with this car is the paint. Sure it looks fine from 10 feet away but it will eventually need to be painted to make it a real nice car. It's a good running Wagon and is ready for the road now! Thanks again for all of the interest and bids. I think the new owner will be getting a very special piece of GM history and a one of a kind car for sure!! Please ask questions or call Tony with questions at 215-499-2693. Thank you and have a very Happy 4th of July!On Jul-03-13 at 13:29:25 PDT, seller added the following information: I think I've covered the description of this car fairly well. The engine runs well, transmission shifts perfectly and the Clutch is excellent. The body is very solid with door dings and the paint has it's share of imperfections which include stone chips, nicks, checking, touch-ups and various other issues. The pictures always make the paint look perfect but the paint does shine for the most part and looks nice from 10-15 feet away but will ultimately need to be painted again at some time. The GM Paint in the late 70's was just awful and it's a miracle that the paint on the Wagon has not peeled off like so many of the other GM cars of this era because of poor quality paint primers that were used from the factory. The Wagon runs great and drives and handles nice and smooth on the highway. Absolutely everything works including the Air Conditioning, Gauges, all Lights and Signals....all accessories....absolutely everything but the clock. I planned to replace the Clock with the Tach/Clock that is readily available for these cars. The car runs out strong and I have had no problems with the cars running condition. One guys asked me if the car could be driven 10 hours and I was completely honest is saying that I just don't know as I have never driven the car that far but I see no reason why it would be a problem. I sold my 1964 Mercury Monterey Commuter Wagon to a friend from New Zealand a few years ago and he drove the car 5,400 miles while he was in the States before eventually making his way to his auto shipper in California. He made the rounds with that car and visited many of our wonderful landmarks and yet he had no problems with the car. What I'm saying is you never know. I told him the same thing that I'll tell you about the 4 Speed 78 Malibu Wagon, I feel confident that the car is reliable and chances are you could drive it anywhere without a problem but since it's a 35 year old car, well you just never know what could happen on the road. I'm just being straight with you guys. It's an excellent running and driving car that shifts beautifully and everything works great... all Brand New Tires...not older tires with like new tread... Brand New Tires... Brakes are all fresh...Shocks are New....Tune-Up parts are all new... all Hoses are New. The car is a very cool and extremely rare one of a kind loaded up 1978 Malibu Wagon with the optional 305, 4 Speed with Optional Hurst Shifter,Gauges, Air Conditioning, Optional Posi Rear, Rally Wheels, Heavy Duty Cooling, Optional Interior, AM-FM Radio, Roof Rack, Optional Body side moldings, Tinted Glass, Deluxe Seat Belts, Floor Mats and more. It's a very cool car and you will not see or find another anytime soon if ever!!! Thanks again... Tony 215-499-2693 On Jul-05-13 at 18:20:22 PDT, seller added the following information: THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL OF INTEREST IN THE 1978 MALIBU 4 SPEED WAGON! IT'S AMAZING JUST HOW MANY GUYS HAVE CALLED ME IN REFERENCE TO THIS CAR. I THINK THAT MOST OF THE SERIOUS PHONE CALLS THAT I'VE RECEIVED HAVE COME FROM GUYS WHO TRULY UNDERSTAND THE EXTREME RARITY OF A 1978 MALIBU WAGON EQUIPPED WITH A FACTORY 305 V8 COMBINED WITH THE 4 SPEED TRANSMISSION WITH THE OPTIONAL HURST SHIFTER, POSI REAR, WORKING COLD AIR CONDITIONING, GAUGES, AM-FM RADIO, FACTORY 14X6" RALLY WHEELS, HEAVY DUTY COOLING PACKAGE, TINTED GLASS, DELUXE LAP-SHOULDER SEAT BELTS, ROOF RACK, BODY SIDE MOLDINGS, FRONT & REAR FLOOR MATS, DOOR EDGE GUARDS, OPTIONAL SPORT CLOTH INTERIOR, CARGO AREA CARPETING, FULL SIZE SPARE SAVER SPARE WITH INFLATOR CANISTER & MORE..... HEAVILY DOCUMENTED FROM DAY 1 WITH GREAT ORIGINAL DOCUMENTATION.... THIS IS A CAR THAT IS EXTREMELY ORIGINAL AND IT WAS NEVER MESSED WITH OR ALTERED IN ANY WAY! THE WAGON IS VERY SOLID AND IS A GOOD RUNNING AND EXCELLENT DRIVING CAR. THE ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, CLUTCH AND REAR ARE ALL IN GOOD OPERATING CONDITION WITH NO UNUSUAL NOISES. EVERY SINGLE ELECTRICAL COMPONENT WORKS PERFECTLY IN THIS WAGON EXCEPT FOR THE CLOCK. THIS IS JUST A SUPER COOL WAGON AND IT'S UNLIKELY THAT WE WILL SEE ANOTHER ONE LIKE IT EVER...SURE THERE COULD BE A COUPLE OF 1978 MALIBU WAGONS OUT THERE WITH A FACTORY 4 SPEED BUT I DOUBT THEY WILL BE OPTIONED LIKE THIS SAFFRON METALLIC/CAME
