In news that really hit us out of nowhere, George Ray’s Wildcat Drag Strip in Paragould, Arkansas is for sale. The historic track has been in operation since 1961, when the late George Ray built it in his own backyard, with his own two hands. One of the most hisoric, unique, and bare bones racing facilities in America the track personifies the basic DNA of drag racing. George passed away last year and his family has been operating the track. Word is, if the track does not sell, it will be open for action in the Spring. If it does sell, we hope and pray it lands in the hands of a buyer that understands the place on more than just a profit margin level. According to the seller, the track draws 100 cars each week to run down the narrow, tree lined strip. All the racing at George Ray’s is done heads up. There are different classes, but the old adage that the first to the finish line wins, is 100% true at George Ray’s place. A true legend, George used to walk around with a pistol on his hip and he cruised the track and the local area in a strange Olds powered hot rod he himself built decades ago. Anyway, $750,000 buys the whole shooting match, including George’s old house. As we said before, we’ll be sleeping uneasily until we learn that the family is going to keep it running, or someone with deep pockets and a true appreciation for what the track truly is makes the buy. If you have never been to George Ray’s Wildcat Drag Strip, check out this old school gallery from Chad and Freiburger’s visit back in 2008.
