Vehicle Detail
This is a prime example of a WWII army jeep - a 1943 Ford GPW - serial number matching frame and tub 114840 - date of original delivery May 1943. I restored this jeep over a period of four years and would like to restore another but need to sell this one first. The engine is a Korean war era M38 engine which Ive been told is more reliable than the vintage wwII period made engines. I had it professionally rebuilt and to date have put about 3000 miles on the jeep since restoration was complete. The body currently on the jeep is reproduction, bought from Bensinger. I have the original body, although it is unrestored, and it goes with the jeep. It is perfectly restorable with minimal work - needs the usual repairs - partial floor partching, hat channels braces, and a side step panel and step. I put the repro body on to enjoy driving the jeep sooner and planned to restore the original body in the meantime, but never got around to it. So with this jeep you get TWO bodies. Most parts to complete the restoration were bought from Ron Fitzpatrick of g503.com, as well as a few other vendors. I have over $13000 invested and many hours of fun, sweat, blood and urine. Recently installed a professionally rebuilt T84 transmission and it shifts perfectly. Four-wheel drive works great, but Ive never tested it on a trail or on obstacles. The electrical system is 6 volt, and uses a rebuilt starter and generator to power the engine, and I installed all new wiring from Joe Hall of Maine. I installed an extra brake light attached to the license plate holder over the spare tire. All NDT tires were new when installed and have about 3000 miles on them. The speedo is period authentic and works fine, but I chose not to reset the odometer to zero, so it shows more than 3000 miles. All gauges were reproduction or rebuilt correct for period. I sandblasted then painted the frame in multiple light coats of POR15, then sanded for a key before applying red oxide primer, then 33070 OD green top coat from Rapco. Combat rims were bought new reproduction. Data plates are reproduction, but I have the originals and they would need light restoration. Engine, transmission and transfer case were painted grey and period decals were applied to oil filter, fuel filter, etc. Brand new 6 volt battery as of January 2013. Jeep uses synthetic brake fluid and synthetic Mobil 1 motor oil. The jeep is ready for summer with a canvas top and runs and drives well, ready to enjoy right away, needs nothing. M1 Garand rifle holder mounted on windshield is not included in the sale. Jeep is located in Kansas City, KS and you are welcome to view/inspect anytime. Please do not bid if you cannot provide a down payment of $500 immediately after auction end. I can store the jeep for a month after auction without a problem. Please email with any questions.
