I am happy to offer a very special example of car history that will either be an attractive addition to your collection or makes up a perfectly fast and efficient daily driver for many many years to come. After BMW had shown that inline 6-cylinders running on gas can almost be as fuel efficient as diesel engines by inventing the 325e and 528e, engineers proceeded to show that diesel engines can be as sportive, that is as fast and responsive, and comfortable as gas engines: They built the 324td. This BMW was built in Jan 1989 and has seen only 52k roadmiles. It is in factory paint. No cracks on dash, no use in seats, as you can see. No noises anywhere. No oil blown, burnt or dripped. The liners all look like new, just one small triangle rip in the drivers door, size of a penny. There is zero rust on this BMW. Never been smoked in. Whatever you touch from door handle to shifter, feels like a year old. And so it drives! No vibrations, no play anywhere, just true german engineering with as good as no usage to observe. Limited slip differential was added by first owner. You will get all new brakes, not overhauled, and a new battery with it. Thanks to an infrastructure grown in decades I was offered this wagon last year at a mileage of 81.500 km = 51 k miles. After driving through whole germany to check it out, I didn't hesitate to pay a collector's price and get it trucked home, which is Berlin. I changed timing belt, water pump, head gasket and oils and went on holidays to southern France to get to know a BMW that almost reaches 200 km/h on the highway by making 33.6 mpg: pretty convincing! No technical flaws on the way, but plenty of heads turned, many smiles. After holidays I stored the wagon in a dry garage, as it doesn't make sense to ruin it in daily Berlin traffic, where we prefer Taxis anyway. Now with our newborn, we rather fly into holidays the next years, so it's time to find the final home. The first BMW station is often thought of as the nicest station ever built. Strange they never sold it in the US, and most probably there is no other diesel around. By smog rules, this is the only one you are allowed to register in CA. Stored close to Berlin, Germany, this 324td will turn classic on Jan 1, 2014. From this day on, it is exempt of DOT, EPA and CA smog! Just register as is. Boat trip to either California or Baltimore is included and so is the storage till November or December, when we can put it on a boat. Of course you can come along and spend your european holidays this summer in this car or bring it into the US in 2013 as a tourist car and register later. But please find out yourself how that works.
