Vehicle Detail
1985 BMW 528e With much regret, I'm selling my two-owner 1985 BMW 528e. I purchased the car from the original owner with just over 155K miles in Aug of 2012. He was a retired gentleman who purchased the car new while stationed overseas in the 80s (US Spec vehicle – not grey market). He picked it up in Springfield, Virginia upon returning from his overseas duty station. He kept the car in immaculate condition, stored under cover in his heated garage, and collected receipts for maintenance and routine repairs totaling over $27,000 over the course of his 26 year ownership. The front seats have spent their entire life under sheepskin covers and remain in like-new condition. The paint is shiny and has been waxed bi-annually. The car is stock, with only genuine OEM parts used for repairs and maintenance. The car was driven only approximately 6000mi per year, but never sat unused for an extended period. Since I purchased the car I have stored it in my garage, under cover. It's been driven very little. When I purchased the car, I was in the market for a daily-driver e28, specifically the 528e for it's fuel economy. I was astounded at the condition of this car when I found it and simply couldn't walk away, convincing myself that I would use it as a driver and weekend preservation-class show car. Reality is that this is a bit too nice for a daily driver (in my opinion) and we are using a newer Honda Civic now for daily driving. The bimmer has sat in the garage, under the cover, and hasn't been used. We don't have time for shows right now and we could use the garage space - it simply doesn't make sense to keep it for my family right now. I have a binder with every receipt for maintenance and repair since new. I have all the original documentation, manuals, envelops, keys, etc... from the new-purchase of the vehicle back in 1985. The car has seen nearly $7500 in maintenance in the last 10000 miles of use. This is the best kept mid-eighties bimmer I have ever seen that was actually used by it's owner as intended. It will certainly take home the preservation class trophy at many shows. Some notes: The car shows only one spot of surface rust anywhere. I took a picture of it. The rust showed in the early 2000s and was addressed at that time. It is barely noticeable and has been inhibited and touched up with original paint. See the pictures and video. The radio will power on, but won't hold a station. It may simply need an adjustment, but perhaps will need to be replaced. The car is absolutely stock except for the steering wheel. It was replaced with a BMW unit from a sportier model by the original owner when he bought the car. I have the original too. Everything works as intended - all lights, windows, sunroof, horn, power seats, central locks, and other bits are operating as they should. The heater and AC work as intended. The maintenance lights work except for the oil light is illuminated. It was inspected by my mechanic and determined to be a faulty sender. I did not have it replaced. The tires are excellent and have less than 5000 miles on them. The brakes and suspension are like-new, both received major service within the last 5000 miles. The odometer is starting to make noise (faint clicking sound). These were designed with plastic drive gears in the dash and they go bad eventually. It sounds like this one may be going bad. New gears are under $20 from Bavarian Auto and the work is fairly easy to accomplish. I'll order a set of gears and give them to the new owner. If you'd like me to replace the gears myself, I can do that too. The title is in hand and clear - no accidents, no damage, no other issues whatsoever. The car is located in Kalamazoo, MI This car is a gem. It gets about 27mpg overall and looks like a brand new e28. These are such a great model and wonderful example of the classic lines of BMWs of the 80s. The new owner will undoubtedly be delighted by the condition - this shows better than you would expect, it's that nice! Email me with questions. Leave you phone number and I'll call you back. I have this listed locally for sale and reserve the right to end the auction early for a local buyer. Please do not bid unless you plan to actually buy the car. I will drive this to meet someone at an airport or possibly even deliver for gas money and a ticket home - inquire if interested. On Apr-02-13 at 21:27:09 PDT, seller added the following information:I shot a video of the car running and operating the accessories. Email me through the ebay system and I'll send you a link. Ebay doesn't let me post it here... It shows the front seats, but I'll snap pictures of them tomorrow after work and post them up. Sorry I forgot to attach anything showing the fronts! They are perfect by the way - been covered since new and it shows. On Apr-03-13 at 12:49:39 PDT, seller added the following information: Several folks have asked about the front seats, since I failed to post pictures of them up (duh)! email me and I'll send you a link to view photos of the front seats. They are in very, very nice condition - being left under cover since new. I'd add the photos here, but again; ebay doesn't allow it. On Apr-03-13 at 18:48:03 PDT, seller added the following information:If anyone wants me to deliver this car to Washington DC, or anywhere between Michigan and DC, please let me know. I work in DC and live in Kalamazoo, so this would be easy for me to do. I would only charge gas for the service. On Apr-04-13 at 09:16:30 PDT, seller added the following information:Note: I will also include the Bentley service manual. The binder that holds all receipts for maintenance since new is in excellent condition and every note and page is legible, all the way back to the new purchase information. This was maintained by the same mechanic since new. He changed shos in the 90s, because the original shop closed down, but the mechanic is the same since new. You don't find that very often...
