Vehicle Detail
A Truly Original and Honest Chevelle SS 396 with factory A.C. This 1970 Chevelle SS 396 is one of the more highly original documented cars you will find. It has been lovingly cared for throughout the years by all of its owners. Never raced or modified it has remained a true unmolested treasure. All of the sheet metal is original, unrestored and arrow straight. Beautiful original pinch welds and drops offs are easily identified as are the factory GM stampings at the top of the quarters inside the trunk jambs. The Chevelle SS was originally special ordered by Herb Lungren Chevrolet-Oldsmobile in Hays, Kansas on dealer order # SPN663 without cowl induction or hood pins and was delivered to the owner, Philip Wilson on May 13th, 1970. The original dealer emblem still adorns the trunk lid. All of the ensuing owners have been documented right to this very day. Each and every owner has maintained the vehicle for optimal driving enjoyment but never for racing. A true gentleman's car. Besides having every owner documented from day 1 and numerous registrations from these owners the car has retained its original dealer Protecto-Plate, original shipping order from the Alington, Texas assembly plant and the Pre-delivery adjustment check sheet. Numerous maintenance records from the owners have survived with the car while living in other states such as Texas and California. The Cranberry red paint on the Chevelle is rich, deep and wet sanded flat to perfection. It is the only re-paint it has been treated to over its all original sheet metal. Zero chips, scratches or dings. Looks just as great in brilliant sunlight as it does under fluorescent light. I would conservatively rate the paint about a “9”. The interior is in beautiful condition with no rips, tears or seam seperations. The trunk has been re-sprayed with the correct style spatter spray and boasts something pretty unusual: it retains its original Uniroyal Tiger Paw F70-14 raised white letter spare. These have never been reproduced. I’ve seen these tires sell for over $500.00 individually. Here are some of the most important casting numbers and dates that pertain to the originality of the Chevelle: - Distributor 11112000 0 B 10 - Water Pump 3969811 K 11 9 - LH Exhaust Manifold 3916178 B 14 70 - RH Exhaust Manifold 3909897 B 14 70 - Fan 3947772 A 70 - Wheel Pump Pulley 3976059 AO - Original Air Cleaner with stenciled lettering underneath - Transmission 21829 70 CF/422 - Quadra-jet Carburetor 7040204 - Cylinder Heads 3964290 A 24 & B 18 - Rear Axle CCW 03 06 B1 - Alternator 1100843 B 21 70 - SS Wheels AO - Crank Pulley for A.C. 3937787 - Exhaust Tips 3956756W - Intake Manifold 39255287 B 24 70 - Correct T-3 Headlights The components listed above that pertain to the engine are from all from the original engine block that was replaced by GM under warranty with a CE block in 1971, casting # 396854 dated E 14 1. Engine pad reads: CE 171979. The original Turbo 400 transmission and 3:31 12 bolt posi rear are also intact. Finding a Cranberry Red Chevelle with a matching red interior is somewhat unusual but this car leaving any of the assembly plants with a factory white vinyl top makes it one of the very few ever made in this color combination. In all my years of enjoying Chevelles it is the first red/red car I have run across with a factory white vinyl roof. RARE indeed. One of the nicest options on the SS is factory 4 season air conditioning that blows ice cold. Power steering makes for easy 1 finger turning and a remote side view mirror is an additional factory option. It runs and drives beautifully. It is not very often one finds cars this original but if you look underneath this car you will notice that it still retains its factory red-lead floor pans. Not many of the assembly plants used this ( I believe the Arlington plant was possibly the only one) and very few cars retain this original application. It is untouched and in its original state. Proper tags and inspection markings have been re-applied to the underside of the SS. It is certainly very common to find nicely restored Chevelles and also over-restored ones in todays muscle car world but very few can claim this kind of originality in a rare desirable color combination. I would classify the Chevelle as a very strong #2 car that is in the show/driver category. There won’t be any disappointments with this car…. and if the winning bidder feels I’ve misrepresented the car in any way he will able to return the car in the condition sold for a refund of the winning bid less the listing and selling fees. Its like a money back guarantee. That’s how confident I am in the car. Shipping will be the responsibility of the buyer however I possibly might be able to help depending upon location. I welcome anybody to fully inspect the Chevelle and take for test drive (weather permitting). I will entertain offers to end the auction with a “Buy it now” but only in person. No phone offers. Please don’t e-mails questions…. I will gladly spend the time talking to you on the phone and go over all of your questions patiently. I will possibly consider a trade for a mid-year Corvette but would prefer to sell. My cell # is (914) 494-2143. If you have taken the time to read all this I thank you for your interest. Good luck.
