Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is a beautiful 1972 Mercedes 280SE 4.5 in very nice condition. NO RESERVE - This car will sell to the highest bidder. If I had to give it a rating, I’d rate it as a 4 on the Autotrader scale of 1-5. In the months I have owned this car, I have sorted it out to the point of making it a reliable driver so you don’t have much to do. Although it is being sold as is, where is, I fully believe you could hop in this car and drive it across the country without issue. I have recently driven it on a 300 mile highway trip and it ran beautifully. I am selling it because my interests have shifted to other things. Between me and the prior owner, over $10000 has been spent in repairs to make this car a reliable driver. Please see below for more details of the work done. All service is up to date. The window glass, paint, chrome, trim and so forth are all very nice and intact. The body and undercarriage are in supreme condition and representative of a car that spent most of its life in Arizona, California and in a garage. Seats are firm, nice headliner, door panels and carpet. The car is a head turner that gets compliments everywhere I go. You are welcome and encouraged to come inspect the car to verify its condition. It’s been stored in a nice dry garage and that’s why the body is in the condition that it’s in. Beware when buying one of these cars as they are complex and you will likely get some surprises. I value my feedback and want to make sure you are aware of any and all issues that I am aware of on the car, no matter how minor. Following are the issues I am aware of on the car: The water taps are seized and from what I have read online should only need a good soaking with a penetrant to free up. One of the heater levers is broken. The right rear door actuator is seized so that door cannot be opened. I tried to get it open and could not. The chrome piece for the lock lever fell down into the door while I was trying to free it up but I am working on sourcing a replacement. The rear defroster knob lights up but I don’t think it actually works. The AC blows cool but not cold and will probably need a recharge. The cruise control is not working but this may be because it is not hooked up properly. I intend to look into that. The reverse lights are not working but I have a new neutral safety switch that will come with the car which should address the issue. I have new shocks for it (not installed). There are some small touch up spots on the paint, with one of them about the size of a quarter and the touch-up paint is slightly a different shade. Many sellers will not disclose this level of detail on a car like this, but I want a happy customer. All in all, these are very minor things that should not take too much effort to get sorted. The basics that make this car mechanically sound are all in place. On a positive note, the car starts, runs and drives well with tight and supple steering and suspension. Good brakes and tires, up to date service. The radio and power antenna work well. The blower motors for the AC and ventilation system work fine. Turn signals and lights work fine (except reverse as mentioned). Windows are all working. Clock works and keeps good time. The paint and chrome are shiny. The pictures really don’t do this car justice and if at all possible you should come see it in person. Here is a list of things I have done to the car: Replaced brake hose, rear muffler, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, ignition points, injection points, cold start valve, ignition coil, air fuel valve, cold start valve, hood release cable, fuel injector, injector hose, remanufactured driveshaft and new support bearing, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator. Valves adjusted and all fuel and air mixtures properly set. Flushed brake fluid, changed engine coolant, changed power steering fluid. I also had work done to the wiring to get the headlights, turn signals, running, and license plate lights working. The prior owner had the transmission replaced and serviced with fresh fluid and filter (about 2500 miles on the transmission oil and filter), oil and filter change (currently about 1500 miles on the oil). Tires have less than 3000 miles on them. Brakes and rotors are in good shape and well within wear limits. Emergency brake springs replaced and shoes repaired. There is a big spring under the car that has been replaced also, I am not sure what it is but it is near the differential. I have a neutral safety switch and a set of shocks for the car which have not yet been installed as of this writing. Driving Video Cold Start Warm Start On Jan-10-13 at 17:56:05 PST, seller added the following information: The car comes with a metal plate stamped with the original purchaser's name and address and some additional info, the original registration receipt, owner's service and warranty booklet with punched VIN, maintenance book with several stamps, emissions systems manual, seatbelt operating instructions paper, a break-in pamphlet, directory of MB dealers in the US, two different owner's manuals and a brown cover for it all with a clear front. It also has the lug wrench and the jack. The spare looks to have decent tread, but could probably use some air.
