Vehicle Detail
Last year of the 2nd gen F-body. This is a collectors car now. There was only 6000 Turbo cars built in 1981. I dont know how many of those were white. The 4.9L turbo Trans Am is a rare car. I bought this car a few weeks ago with the intention of building another drag car. The car has been parked for almost 10 years. After getting it home I realized that the car is 100% factory intact. I was told that the engine ran 8 years ago but I wasn't concerned because I was going to go a different direction with the car. I got the car in the shop and up on the lift and was amazed how solid it was. There is not one speck of rust on the floors or trunk. The rockers and quarters are rust free. So I put a battery in it and it came to life. I started turning lights on and pushig buttons. I was shocked to see the clock in the dash working. Those usually stop working with in the first few years. I hit the key and it turned over. I dumped a little fuel in the carb and to my surprise it wanted to start. So I drained the fluids and went to work. I dropped the gas tank to flush and discovered a few pin holes on top. So I put in a brand new one in 4 days ago. I rebuilt the carb, put on a new fuel pump, flushed and changed the oil and changed the spark plugs. Added fuel and primed the system. The literally started with in 5 seconds. No knocking no smoking no issues. It runs perfect. The turbo spools up very nicely. I had the replace a few vacuum lines to get it to run like it should. I put the car up on jack stands and ran it through the gears. The tach still works, the speedometer still works. I flipped on the heater fan and it came on. I swithed it over to AC and I heard the compressor kick on for just a second then shut off. Which usually indicates low freon. So I by passed the low pressure switch and turned the ac back on. The condenser tube iced over in a matter of seconds. So the AC is functional its just low on freon. After sitting for nearly 10 years it has a right to be low. The factory radio still works and all the interior lighting works as well as the glove box light. The only thing I found not working is the cigarette lighter. When I opend the trunk I got another surprise. The original spare tire and jack is all still in place. Now, this seems to be a great but know this, the car is in need of full restoration. Car has 4 wheel disk brakes but will all need attention. They work and stop the car but I wont trust them to drive it. Rust: There is rust on the bottom of the doors. Its fixable but I would replace them. Thats just me, The hood will for sure need to be replace and the trunk lid has rust on the inside. There is a a place around the T tops that will need to be repaired. See picture. The rust you see in the pics is surface rust unless otherwise specified. The passenger fender has a dent. I would just fix it but I guess it depends on your skill level. I dont want to destroy a factory correct number matching collector car. So I am selling hoping someone will restore this car like it needs to be. If you are local please feel free to come look at it.
