Vehicle Detail
Why am I selling this fine vehicle? Well, I am handicapped to the extent I can no longer drive. The car must go. I am the second owner of this car. The lady that owned it kept it garaged and only put 10,000 miles on it prior to passing. I purchased it from her husband for $16,000 in 1998. When I tried to haggle, he said "I took $2,000 off for every year my wife had it and the price is firm". I considered the price was fair for a five year old car with low mileage so I bought it. I have kept the car garaged since I purchased it up until April of this year. I purchased a van at that time with a battery scooter in it with an electric lift. My wife is my primary driver now. She let me drive the van 3 miles and that was it. I'm 74 years old now, by the way. The factory color is listed as Garnet Red Metallic. It looks like maroon to me, inside and out. The build date was 10/21/92 in the Willow Run Plant in Michigan. It has a heavy duty suspension but has never had a tow hitch put on or ever towed anything. It also has a Heavy Duty Anti-Lock Braking System with 2 disc front, 2 drum rear braking set-up. The rear axle is has a 2.73 ratio. I mention all the above because my wonderful car gets 26 to 28 miles per gallon on road trips. How this car does it, I don't have any idea. I have found it incredible that a large platform station wagon with a V-8 engine could possibly get this kind of mileage. And I swear: I checked the mileage once on a trip, just before I bought the last set of new tires, and I got 31 miles per gallon. I suspect the well-worn tires contributed a bit to this crazy mileage. That combined with it being a small V-8, the 2.73 axle, and the 4 speed automatic plus overdrive transmission probably helped a bit too. And please note: the engine is fuel injected. On the cosmetics side: the interior and the exterior are great. I have included a photo of the driver's seat (which is usually the first to wear out). There is not one spec of rust anywhere, and that includes the door jambs and under the hood. The fabric interior is in excellent. This is a child free car: no children have ever been in it. No spills in the back seat, etc. The third row of seats (this is a 9 passenger station wagon) is pristine as they have only been up once. This car was purchased with an upgraded stereo system with cassette player and four speakers. I have used an adapter to play CD's on it and it sounds great. By the way, the tail gate opens both sideways (as a door) and also can open in the flat down position. OK, now the good stuff. I replaced the battery one month ago. I put four new tires and a new (not rebuilt) radiator on it and in it about a year ago. This car is registered, has a current inspection sticker, and is a runner. The front end was rebuilt last week and had a front end alignment before the new sticker. OK, now for the bad stuff. The two horn buttons were always bad on the steering wheel so I had a mechanic put in a push button on the face of the dash, just where my left thumb rests if that hand is on top of the dashboard. Also, the automatic down on the driver's window was burning out the window motors so I had the automatic down disabled. The window works fine and the window motor no longer burns out. Unfortunately, the leaf blower guy ran into the passenger side rear hubcap and destroyed in little pieces the Chevrolet medallion in the center of the wire spoke hubcap. The rest of the hubcap was not damaged. There is also some minor damage to the rear bumper (see photo). These vehicles also had an auto-leveling system which never lasted too long involving a 12 volt air pump and air shocks. This one was gone when I bought the car. My mechanic told me that it would not be a good idea to try to get it working again, just use new regular heavy duty shocks, which I have done. On Dec-26-12 at 08:26:28 PST, seller added the following information:I had a question from an interested party concerning the two accidents reported by carfax. I reminded him that you could see the dent in the rear bumper on the left side. I meant "my other left side". Actually the dent is on the RIGHT side. In truth, both accidents were actually slow speed impacts and only cosmetic damages occurred. Of course that doesn't mean I didn't go after the other two parties insurance and get my car repaired. On Dec-29-12 at 06:38:30 PST, seller added the following information: I have thought of some additional information a potential buyer may want to know. This vehicle is a SMOKE FREE vehicle. The previous owner (his wife's car) and his wife did not smoke. Neither my wife nor I have EVER smoked even a single cigarette in our lives. No passengers have ever smoked in this car with the minor exception of my friend Gus who has traveled in this car once or twice a short distance. The ash trays are as clean as they were when it came from the factory. I assume the cigarette lighters work and I believe they also are unused. The sound system is an AM/FM cassette four speaker stereo system. The antenna or the radio is missing a ground wire, I haven't been able to check it out. The FM and cassette player work fine, however the AM does not. BUT at one time, a good ground (somewhere) for a short time was allowing the AM radio to work fine. It was clear and functioning correctly. Unfortunately it no longer is satisfactory. I am absolutely positive that this is only a minor problem and could be easily fix by someone more agile than myself.
