Vehicle Detail
For Sale: 1961 Rambler American Custom convertible, model #6107-2, 196 OHV, AT, power steering, power top, 85K, runs and drives nice. Before its restoration in 2002-04, this was a very nice rust free Montana car, one of 10,855 produced. The 196 overhead valve six cylinder was rebuilt, and has been driven several thousand miles with no problems. It has a slight hesitation under acceleration, and would surely benefit from a carb tune and distributor recurving for modern fuels. The exhaust was replaced, and all the bolt-on accessories were either new or rebuilt. Starter, generator, fuel pump, water pump, etc. The automatic transmission and rear end function properly with no issues. Steering, suspension & brakes: With the low mileage, all the knuckles and joints appear to be original, tight and well lubricated. The power steering is nice, even for a small car like this, altho it seeps a bit. The brakes work fine, and have lots of life left on the shoes. Wheels & hubcaps are original, with factory sized bias-ply wide whites. Electrical: Exterior lights all function; turn, parking, brake, etc. All the dash gauges work, as does the radio. Interior: The T160 Yellow interior is original on the doors and quarter panels, possibly the rear seat. The front seat was redone in exact matching material, and looks very nice. The dash was repainted, and has new carpets. Body: This car was originally P1 black, but has been repainted to 1961 P28 Berkeley Blue Metallic. As mentioned, the body was rust free with very minor dings and dents. Although there are some flaws, the new paint is well above average. Of note, there are several paint runs along the reverse curve of the body, and I have tried to take pics showing this. Most of these could be wet sanded out. There are misc paint defects, chips, scratches, etc. If you are looking for a show queen, then this car is not for you. It was restored to be a very nice driver, and to that end has met its goal with flying colors. The bumpers were re-chromed, and much of the stainless was polished. There are a few scratches, dings, etc. in some of the trim, but overall it’s very presentable. The convertible top was replaced, and the power motor works as it should. It does seem to have a slight gap along the side edges, and am not sure if it has shrunk a bit, or just needs some adjustment. Also, there are two areas around the rear window that the stitching is loose. There are no tears I can see, so they could be repaired. Some Rambler history: In 1960, George Romney, AMC’s president, had design chief Ed Anderson reskin the existing Rambler American, using the using the inner body panels of the earlier ’58-’60 American, to create this new design. With very low costs, they were able to completely freshen the look of the car, which carried it for three more years, until the new ’64 models appeared. 1961 was the first year the American was offered as a convertible. License plates are not included in sale unless sold within Washington state. I have tried to describe the Rambler as thoroughly as possible, but as with all old cars, it’s impossible to cover everything. Yes, it has little quirks, oil drips, rattles and squeaks, but keep in mind this is a 50 year old car. I will answer all pertinent questions as best I can.
