Vehicle Detail
Background info: Based on the 1986 model year E30 3-Series, the first M3 was introduced with a 2.3 L I4 S14B23 engine (also known as S14). The engine design was based on various BMW parts: basic block layout from the M10 4-cylinder (found in the 2002 and 320 series) overbored and reinforced to similar specifications of the BMW M88 inline-6. The valve train and head architecture from BMW's M1 and, later, M6 inline-6-cylinder was adopted for aggressive breathing. In contrast to later M3 iterations, the E30 M3 was campaigned by BMW as well as other racing teams including Prodrive and AC Schnitzer competing in many forms of racing including rally as well as German, British, Italian, Belgian, French, and Australian touring. The production of the E30 road car was to homologate the M3 for Group A Touring Car racing. It was to compete with the "2.3-16V"-model of the Mercedes-Benz W201 190E that was introduced in 1983. In its final years of competition, the 2.5-litre S14 engine in full race trim was capable of over 250 hp (190 kW) naturally aspirated. 1988 M3 Track Car with 221k on chassis. Stock engine with approximately 125k miles on it. All compression between 150-160 (see pics) VIN - WBSAK0306J2197216 Engine: Stock engine runs great and starts right up (push button start). Runs great. Chassis: Fiberglass front fenders Carbon fiber hood Front brake ducts Hawk brake pads ATE blue race brake fluid Suspension: Turner motorsport J stock suspension with upside down Bilstein shocks (see Turner's website for additional details) Aluminum control arms Front and rear sway bar reinforcements 75mm studs for easy wheel changeout (no studs) Safety Items Bolt in Autopower 6 point cage Rear shock tower brace Front shock tower brace Interior Simpson tach. Stock chip and 7k redline. Stock tach not operational, speedo works. All carpet removed; door panels and headliner still installed. windows/sunroof still operate via switch Custom push button start (awesome), fuel switch, fan switch, light switch (see pictures), the sunroof operates and works thru the factory ceiling switch. Pusher fan (saves HP while on the track) Removable Sparco steering wheel (awesome feature for getting in and out) Brakes Stock brakes with recently rebuilt front calibers, very good Hawk brake pads (great modulation) new rotors and pads all around 25mm master cylinder (upgraded, better brake feel, stock is 23mm, brake line upgraded for modification). Drivetrain 4.45 rear differential with Z3 finned cooler (stock is 4:10 unit with standard diff cover (not vented for cooling)) Seats and belts Sparco 2000 seats (2003) 5 point Schroth harness on drivers side with 5 point Simpson in passenger seat. Wheels - (1) Set of stock 15 x 7 with good used Toya Ra1 tires. Stock wheels are painted black. Known issues - Front damaged at some time. The front fenders were replaced with fiberglass units and CF hood. The front clip was repaired. The strut towers do not appear to be damaged. During the repair, it looks like there was some bondo applied at the inside passenger front clip near strut tower (inside engine compartment, paint peeling on bondo), Also some rust at the rear license plate where license plates lights are located. The area below the front windshield cowl has been repaired at some point. There are two rust bubbles approximately 3/4" x 1/4" long on the driver side edge of the sunroof. Scratch in paint approximtely 4" long below emblem on the rear deck. The car is 24 years old and is not perfect but looks great and fits the purpose of a track car very well. To make street legal (in my state - NC, please verify own state requirements), a turn signal stalk would need to be added. The wiring was adjusted for the push button start but would think all the wiring harness would be in place to add back. Brake lights, headlights, emergency brake etc are operational. Do not have stock interior parts that were removed. The stock center exhaust with cats is still place. I have never had the car smogged. NC requires only 96 and newer cars with OBDII to be smogged. Also, Autocheck shows clean title but carfax shows salvage title back in 1994. It has changed states several times and I have a clear NC title (received clear Illinios title). It shows the accident in 1994 with less than 100k miles. It has made it as street car and then coverted into a track car around 2004 (did not do the track conversion, previous owner mentioned this). Car has been listed on eBay several times and all buyers have not paid deposit/nor have come see the car the person. This is a great car and makes the driver look very good. The light weight, chassis setup from BMW M Division, and great suspension make this car a great car for the track. The car is very neutral as the weight balance is near perfect. It is very light on tires and brakes for driving schools. If raced (verify with sanction body), updated belts, window net, and cut switch would be required. It is ready to go as a DE school as is. Also as these cars are getting rarer and rarer, they will most likely continue to climb in value. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for looking!
