Vehicle Detail
I bought this car in the summer of 1976. it was already hot rodded a little (cam, headers, etc.) i drove it as a weekend car 76-77. got married in 1978 and parked it till 1981. started bracket racing the car in 1981. switched to 727 auto w/2800 stall (still in car). Put a hotter General Kinetics cam in it, 906 heads from a 69 roadrunner, and 4.86 gears in the rear. Raced it occasionally at the local dragstrip. When the track closed in 1984 I parked it again and started on a 15 year circle track career. The car sat outside from 1984 until 1992, which is when the rust occurred. Then I built a new garage and it has been inside the last 20 years. When I purchased the car, it had 57,000 miles on it. It has 64,000 miles on it now. I never took the clutch pedal out, just stuck it under the floor mat. From the Standard Catalog of American Cars “Of the grand total of 29,833 Challengers built in 1971, just 5.3% had four-speed manual gearboxes and 16.8% were equipped with optional V-8 engines. ( any engine 340 c.i. or larger.) This car has both. It is believed that less than 1600 four-speed 1971’s were built. The bad – this car has extensive rust issues. The drivers floor area is gone due to a cracked windshield. Pass side front floor has some scale but looks saveable. Rear floors look ok. Rust in rockers where they meet the quarters. Rust in lower quarter panels. Rust in lower front corners of doors. Rust in lower fenders and left fender above headlamp. I have two front bumpers that go with the car, but both are poor condition. Bottom corners of grille have small pieces missing (partially covered when bumper is installed) also has the usual cracks around the bolt holes. The dash pad is bad, seats probably rebuildable, door panels ok. The hood is solid. The trunk lid has serious rust underneath. And the center of the trunk floor will need replacement, possibly more. There is some rust at the top of the front inner fenders. The cowl appears solid, but I have not had it on a hoist to see the bottom. The rear window area is solid. The windshield opening had small rust holes near some of the trim attachment points which I repaired with a mig welder. There is no windshield. I have the windshield trim from this car and part of another, can probably make a good set. The headliner and carpets are shot. There is no radio. The car has not run in 28 years, and EVERYTHING will need repair or replacement. The good – has original engine, stamped G383 on the pad under distributor. Engine turns using ½ drive ratchet. Comes with original 906 heads (bare,w/minor port work) and the 1969 906 heads that are on the engine. The intake manifold is an edelbrock DP4B that has a Chrysler part # behind the carb. (may have been dealer installed?) has 26 inch radiator. Comes with 727 automatic /2800 stall and original 4-speed transmission w/shifter. Shifter mount bracket was broken years ago, I fabricated a steel replacement that works perfectly. The flywheel is a Hays that was purchased new and only run a short time before the 727 went in. has great ring gear, no heat cracks, needs minor resurfacing. Has 2 piece scattershield and block plate. The transmission mounting area of the scattershield suffered rusting due to poor storage and may or may not be useable. No clutch. 8 ¾ rear has the original 3.55 gears and yoke as well as 4.86 gears and yoke. The posi was disassembled for inspection many years ago and never reassembled. I had rebuilt it previously and wanted to check it. Looked ok then. It is the cone-type posi and comes with one extra cone from a donor 8 ¾ rear. Driveshaft is in the car, as well as another 8 ¾ center section. I put a battery in the car and the lights worked. I pulled the plugs and oiled the motor a little. It cranked a bit but the starter failed. Comes w/50 year old M/H piecrust slicks on 6” van wheels w/tubes. Has 7” mopar cop wheels in front, also comes w/original front wheels (rusty) w/front caps and trim rings. The car rolls but does not stop.
