Vehicle Detail

For Sale: 1983 BMW R80 G/S NEEDS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO RIDE IT HOME!!Please contact me for a link to a Picasa web photo album with 70+ detailed pictures. Although the Paris-Dakar Replica was not released until 1985, this 1983 R80 G/S is set up with the 8.9 gallon desert tank and solo seat/rack that characterized the later model. If you’re looking for a concours correct ’83 G/S, pass on this. If you’re looking for a very functional example of the model, read on! The first rider of this bike was Don Rosene, owner of The Motorcycle Shop in Anchorage, Alaska. One of the first things he did was modify the engine with a factory kit to replace the cylinders and pistons with 1000cc components (the engine casing and internals being the same with the R80 and R100 models.) Interestingly, this conversion uses the same heads and carbs, so it does not make more horsepower but (as he described to me,) has more low-end “grunt” and will pull away from a stock R80 in a roll-on contest in any gear. The second rider was “Fighter” Stein, also of Anchorage, who is one of the originators of the “Over The Top Hop,” later to become the “Dust to Dawson” ride. He had it for several years and eventually sold it to my acquaintances, Bill Still and Dick Hitchcock, who were firefighters in the Anchorage Fire Department and airhead enthusiasts. Bill and Dick proceeded with a full-disassembly restoration of the bike (including powder-coating the frame and updating the valve seats) to enter it into the Anchorage Spring Bike Show of 1998 where it won the People’s Choice Award. They rode it during the season of 1999 and then stashed it in Dick’s garage, where it sat mostly unused for 8 years. I acquired it in 2007 with 89,000 miles on the odometer. Over the last 5 years, I have upgraded, restored and repaired its outstanding issues while using it to explore the mining and ranch roads of southern Arizona and complete most of a Great Divide Ride. Although it is a very capable off-road motorcycle, it has proven to be simply too large for the type of riding that I presently prefer and I am selling it to pursue development of a smaller dualsport mount. Call it a sickness if you may (my wife does!) but I enjoy working on these older airheads almost as much as I enjoy riding them, so the time spent on repairing and upgrading this example have been very fulfilling. The ideal buyer would be someone who is knowledgeable and appreciative of the airhead G/S and intends to continue enjoying if as much as I have. This bike is no garage queen! While fixing and upgrading its mechanical needs, I have used it for its intended purpose. It has been maintained to excess with frequent engine and driveline fluid changes and has been tuned and maintained with care. It comes complete with BMW hard cases that are in very good condition (a few superficial scuff marks) Note in the photographs that the plastic side panels are absent – the left one does not fit due to the remote nitrogen reservoir for the shock absorber, so they are both removed. I have these pieces as well as the plastic bra that was originally mounted in front of and below the engine. Highlights of its repairs while in my possession include: 2007 89,000 wiring harness removed, cleaned, rebundled and encased in split loom front brake master cylinder replace heated grips switch replace clutch cable replace fork boots replace throttle cables spline lube 89,800 replace timing chain and upper sprocket, with rail, tensioner spring, seals, gaskets, bearing and new alternator brushes starter overhaul, with drive end and brush end bushings shock absorber rebuild (by Works Shocks) replace driveshaft to final drive gasket 90,000 replace front forks (Forks by Frank) and seals replace stock coil with Dynacoil modify sidestand to self-holding configuration 2008 90,500 speedometer overhaul (Palo Alto Speedometer) replace speedometer cable 2009 91,500 replace rear main oil seal replace oil pump cover O-ring transmission shimming and reseal (Z’s Motorwerks) spline lube replace driveshaft boot replace Right cylinder and rings (both sides) Keensert Right front lower cylinder stud 2010 94,700 replace final drive shaft seal 2011 95,500 oil pressure: (psi) 100+ at startup 80-85, running temp, at 4,000 rpm 30, running temp, at idle replace oil pressure switch battery: Odyssey, 3-2012 tires: TKC 80’s at 91,650 present mileage: 96,200 Items that are NOT stock: CC Products billet upper fork triple clamp front blinker mount (home fab) tach mounting tab (home fab) Rox billet handlebar risers aluminum muffler heat shield (home fab) Works shock Odyssey battery accessory electrical plug mounting tab (BMW plug) split loom covered wiring harness DynaCoil Regarding the muffler, it is stamped with BMW logo and a BMW parts number, stainless steel upgrade It does NOT have a factory tool kit ….and, I believe there was a hand-operated tire pump that was housed in the frame’s upper main tube which is absent Damage: Small dime sized dent in lower left corner of gas tank, 1/32" deep. Other than that just the usual patina associated with a 1983 motorcycle.
