Vehicle Detail
The value of this vehicle is it's rarity. And this is the rarest of the rare. How many could there be? Only 50* where made in 1989/90. How may could have survived the last 23 years? How many left are black on black? And only the '89 GT had the distinctive "Club Sport" rims. All GTs where 5-speeds as compared to the more common automatic S4s. If you think an S4 drives great, wait until you drive a GT. Condition: There are issues. The car exterior is in very good shape. The interior is fair to good. Mechanically, the major things have been done since I bought it in August 2009. See list below. The car stalls occasionally and the GPS and AC go out periodically but come back. I believe there is an electrical issue, perhaps ground. The high beam and left signal indicator stalk doesn't work properly. The leather dash has some cracks (a reason to get it out of the desert) and the driver's seat has a small worn spot on the left side. History: I bought the car from Star European in Costa Mesa CA with 153,237 miles on it. I bought it for $12k with the idea I would restore it. Which I have. I've spent $22k on restoration and $5k on customizing (mainly the entertainment/information system). Since I live in the desert (Palm Springs area), I immediately changed all hoses and belts. I converted the AC to R134. It gets to be 120 degrees here, the cooling system works perfectly and AC works well (when it works--it is not at the moment, I believe it needs a charge). I've gone over every system and repaired or replaced anything suspect. I needed this car to be dependable as I use it as an everyday driver. I'm selling this because I moving to a place with no garage. And I can't bear to watch what the heat and sun will do to this car. It deserves to be completely restored and cherished as it is one of a very few of what I believe was one of the best automobiles ever made. In Palm Springs and LA it gets admiring looks and is the topic of many a conversation with a stranger. At the hotels and casinos they automatically valet it up front with the Bentleys and Ferraris. I don't think the young people even know what it is. This is the third 928 I've owned. The last one was also an 89; though it was an S4. This GT seems like an entirely different excitement. As an antidotal observation, it's cheaper to own and repair this vehicle now than it was in 1989. In 1989 an air filter cost $300. Now they cost about $30. There are a number of websites dedicated to 928s. The one I used most often is 928 International. As far as I can tell, they have every 928 part as either new, used or reconditioned. Most of my expense of restoring this 928 was the mechanic I had to pay. I had no place to do this myself. Compared to later cars it's easy to work on as you have room to get to things. ----Work done details:ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: Bosch Alternator, ignition switch, Optima RedTop 34R, battery cable extended for Optima battery, battery hold-down TIMING BELT: timing belt, tension rollers, idler roller, camshaft timing gear, CV grease, LUBRICATION SYSTEM: oil pump, oil pump seal, crank shaft seal, 20W-50W Castrol GTX (you don't want to run synthetic in these cars). The GT is a special version featuring a revised 5.0 liter 330HP V8, sport suspension and all new seven-spoke Club Sport rims (note 1), the rears the widest yet from Porsche measuring 16 x 9" wide. As such, the GT comes only with a manual trans…. From 959 technology, the 928 GT is fitted with an electronically controlled limited slip differential. The LSD has a progressively lockable multiplate clutch installed with the rear differential (note 2). A computer monitors wheelspin and clutches the affected wheel…The wheels themselves made a change from the original Club Sport wheel in model year 1989 to the forged Design 90 style beginning in 1990. *Exact 928 GT production figures are unknown to the author but have been guesstimated as follows: 1989/90 - 50 US cars; 1990 - 100 US cars; 1991- ? 1992 - no official 928's produced, see the 1993 928 GTS. (In response to market, Porsche introduces the hotter engined GT mid model year in 1989.... For model years 1990-1991, the 928 S4 continues on as before but comes only with 316hp and the 4-speed automatic) (note 1.) Club Sport see 928 S4 info (note 2.) Motor, August 1988 (note 3.) Car and Driver, July 1990 Barring any original car documentation which denotes serial numbers, the only way to authenticate a GT will have to come from the Certificate of Authenticity ie. the cardex info. (This will rule out any creative engine/trans/dash swaps). So, what the cardex will tell you (from my experience with the 1990 model) is: Engine serial number (ex. 85L00855 - all GT engines begin with 85) And curiously enough the 928 GT is identified by Porsche only as "928 S4" For those in the field shopping right now, verifying engine code M28.47 and trans code G28/55 (note these are 'type' not serial numbers) is a fairly safe bet that you are indeed looking at a real GT…. Besides the identification numbers on the engine…there are some esthetic differences. The most obvious on an 89 GT are the wheels. They ?are the forged "Club Sport"… and appeared only on the 89 GT(club sport - ROW) models only. The only other exterior visual is the twin exhaust outlets, 1989 S4 5-speeds have a single outlet and the GT's have dual outlets. On the ?inside the only difference** would be the length of the shifter. In a GT it is ?the shorter shift lever while S4's have the longer shift lever found in early 928's. Of course we all know that Porsche has been known to throw curves from ?time to time and use whatever parts happen to be handy so this is a rule of ?thumb.Payment and delivery to be worked out with the buyer. Delivery will be the responsibility of the buyer. I hold the title for this vehicle so transfer can be immediate.note: I am happy to supply whatever pictures/information you need.* A GT has two fuel pumps. A S4 has one.** I believe the seats are also different. I've read they are Recaro. They are very sculpted and supportive.*** The third-party information seems to indicate the the GT rear tires are wider than an S4.If you just want a 928, this is not the 928 for you. There are plenty (for a limited production exotic) S4s that are probably better priced with lower mileage. Again, the value of this 928 is that it's a very rare GT from '89 the most distinctive year. I believe at this point, given all of the variables, this may be a one-of-a-kind.
