Vehicle Detail

Less than 20000 original miles, 3 owners but really only 1 driver; never been more than 100 miles from Dubois, Wyoming with one possible exception as you will read below. This truck has never had any body work and with the exception of some minor maintenance parts is completely original. This truck was special ordered from Chevrolet with a Detroit locker and 4-wheel drive. Both of these special order options made this truck an ideal ranch work truck for Wyoming in the late 1960s. The Detroit locker was the differential used in ¾ or 1 ton corporate rear axles known as posi-traction. The Detroit locker is unique in that it uses no clutches, is completely mechanical and requires no maintenance. The 4-wheel drive on this truck is incredible: it is an unstoppable truck and part of the superior functioning of the 4-wheel drive is the Detroit locker rear end. I was borrowing a stock trailer from Sexy Tyler a few weeks ago on account of having a young horse who was in a mood and needed an unexpected ride back to the ranch. Now Sexy Tyler is about the best horseshoer in the area and quite a smooth hand with mares of the equine and human variety as well but he has one flaw that made this truck stand out to me: Tyler is a Ford man. Now I’ve got a theory that whether you’re a Ford or a Chevy man if you live a long enough life you’ll run into your one exception, but Sexy Tyler allowed as how the truck had just been sitting behind his round corral and he wasn’t likely to give it the time and attention it so obviously deserved. Me being a lifelong Chevy guy from my conception in the back seat of a 1958 Impala Sports Coup I knew it was my honor-bound duty to find this truck a proper home. Turns out in 1966 a young Wyoming ranch hand had just signed on with the Thunderhead Ranch and the job was so good he knew he could make payments on the new work truck of his dreams. There was a very large flatbed with stock racks on the truck of a style that hasn’t been used in these parts since the 1980s. The original owner was a hardworking young ranch hand and, more importantly, had the right ranch truck, so he worked his way up on the ranch and showed himself to be quite a responsible man except for rumors of a mysterious Vegas showgirl in the late 1970s. The man and the truck stayed in Wyoming and the truck didn’t first change hands until about 15 years ago. John Finley who lives on the East Fork, a couple of miles from the Thunderhead on the Finley Ranch bought the truck after the Thunderhead Ranch pulled its fences for good. John always planned to put the truck to good use but it sat unused at his ranch until Sexy Tyler was there one day three years ago, shoeing horses, and at the end of the day Tyler found himself a sudden Chevy owner at which time he drove the truck to the place where I found it just behind his round corral. When Sexy Tyler showed me this truck I got so excited I went back to my 64 Chevy work truck and dug out a notebook to start making notes. The odometer reads less than 20000 miles and I noticed when I drove it around the pasture that the odometer is stuck so I checked very carefully to confirm the mileage. ‘Course, Sexy Tyler had already said the odometer was right and even provided an Affadavit for whoever becomes the new owner and Sexy Tyler don’t lie. In fact, I’ve recently observed Sexy Tyler at a local watering hole flirting with a pretty girl who pouted and said that Tyler wouldn’t even remember her name come tomorrow. Tyler smiled that way he does and told that pretty girl that he didn’t even remember her name now and you’d think that kind of honesty would interfere with the flirting but Sexy Tyler sure didn’t leave alone that night. Sexy Tyler said that the odometer worked when the truck was parked a few months ago but then he was working with an ornery young horse who decided to get a little broncky. Tyler parted company with that horse with enough force and speed to lead to a four day hot-tub recovery for Tyler and the odometer has never worked since. Tyler’s recovery was more complete but of course, he had more pretty girls giving him TLC. You may notice a knee-shaped dent in the passenger door from the same day and the same bronc. The truck hadn’t moved since then until I came by so nobody had noticed the odometer was stuck. Here are some other low-mileage indications I looked for: · No rust repair or body work was ever done on this truck. · Floorboards are original and completely intact with no rust holes . · The cab mounts are not cracked, sagged or worn. · Wear on the pedals and floor mat is consistent with less than 20000 miles of use. · I have the original tires on the original rims. · The radiator hoses and plug wires have never been replaced and are the factory original. · The original headlights are still on this truck. · The exhaust manifold heat riser moves freely and is still functioning as designed. · The shocks are the original shocks and still have most of the factory paint on them. · The transfer case still has the factory paint on it. · The results of the engine compression test on the 292 cu. In. 6 cyl I ran were: o #1: 126; #2: 130; #3: 130; #4: 127; #5: 131; #6: 126 This truck has a 4-speed manual transmission with 4.55 gears in the axles with a Detroit locker in the rear. As was done in 1966 the transfer case is a divorced Rockwell 2-speed. The glass in windshield and all windows is excellent and unchipped. The dashboard is uncut and has the factory radio block-off plate. The truck starts easily and runs like a top. It drives and tracks beautifully on country roads and on the highway even with bias-ply ‘60s vintage tires, the front end and suspension are tight. This truck has never been exposed to salt unless you count the mineral blocks carried in the bed for the stock on the ranch. Wyoming does not run salt on the roads and you can see the results in the remarkable lack of rust on this truck. This truck can be driven from here to any place in the contiguous United States. I will drive it to you for expenses or meet you or your driver at the nearest Interstate. Before driving it any substantial distance or recommending that you do I would replace the radiator hoses and substitute modern radial tires. Other than that I would trust this truck for the trip and with my best girl. I have included many pictures of the truck based on what I would want to see. Please feel free to contact me for any additional pictures or to answer any questions. Tom Rose 307-455-3265
