Vehicle Detail

For sale: 1968 Pontiac 400. OK that was easy, now for the story... Yes, milage is correct, there are 195.3 miles on the odometer. New odometer was installed during restoration. This car started rebirth 15 years ago. This is not a concourse restoration, but it is a very nice restomod which has been restored with the best parts available. This car started life as a flambeau maroon, 400 coupe, with a turbo 400, YT block with Q Jet, and #16 heads. Horsepower was rated at 335 HP. Original options include air conditioning, am radio, bucket seats, console. I purchased this car with approx. 126K on the odometer. The trunk, floorpans, cowl, doors, deck lid, hood, and roof structure were all very clean, with minor surface rust. The fenders and quarter panels had typical midwest rot and have been replaced with new sheetmetal. The original YT engine was intact. The previous owner worked at a GM parts counter and had accumulated nearly every NOS part available in the 70's to restore this vehicle to near new condition. The car was disassembled, media blasted, and refinished with DuPont ChromaBase with a Polyurathane clearcoat. Color is 2000 Ford Performance Red. The left quarter panel was replaced with a NOS GM full quarter. The right quarter panel repair utilized a reproduction patch panel. Fenders and front cowl are NOS GM parts. Marker lights in the quarter panels are 1969 camaro units. The decklid is fitted with a year appropriate spoiler. Proper NOS Pontiac 400 emblems were affixed to the spoiler. Paint is approximately 7 years old. All weatherstripping, trim, emblems, and marker lights have been replaced with NOS Gm parts. The doors and decklid close like the day it rolled off the assembly line. The hood fit like every other firebird I have seen from this era. Hood pins have been added to asssist with a proper fit and offer an extra level of safety above the original latch system. The interior includes original door panels, seats, and console. New carpet and headliner have been installed. The gauge panel has been updated to the 160 MPH speedo with functioning gauge package. Interior control switches have been replaced with NOS units. A correct tilt wheel has been installed along with a wood Grant steering wheel. The original YT block is included with the car. It suffered a spun main bearing which damaged the main webbing. The block is repairable but has been replaced with a 73 block for structural integrity. The original heads, intake, pan, windage tray, rods, valve covers, etc. are intact. The engine specifications are as follows: Block: Hot tanked, magnafluxed, bored .030" over, 1973 Pontiac 400 Y3 code. New cam bearings New Melling high pressure oil pump Original 6 quart Pontiac oil pan with windage tray Pontiac cast iron crankshaft, polished, standard rod and main bearings Pontiac rods are fitted with ARP bolts. Rods have been honed and balanced.Edelbrock double roller timing chain Speed Pro forged L2262F pistons fitted with chrome moly ring set Fel Pro gaskets Compression ratio: 10:1 Heads: 72cc, #16 heads Professionally ported and sonic tested, spring seats relieved for proper spring height Stainless steel, undercut stem, pro-flow Manley valves Dual roller springs Chrome moly, 10 degree locks and retainers Comp cams guideplates Big block chevy 3/8" rocker studs Valvetrain: Herbert solid roller cam, approx. .560 lift, 282 duration Solid roller tappets 3/8" Comp Cams chrome moly pushrods, 0.100 long Harland Sharp 1.5 ratio aluminum roller rockers Ignition: GM HEI distributor and coil MSD Digital 6 control with rev limiter Intake: Original cast iron, high rise intake manifold Correct Q-jet carburetor Exhaust: Hooker headers Full 3" dual exhaust Turbo mufflers Estimated power is 425hp, 400 ft-lb torque. The mild roller cam sounds much like a ram air grind but is substantially more efficient due to the shorter duration. This combination is very responsive and makes good torque throughout the power band. The engine is freshly built and has approximately 4 hours runtime. The drivetrain consists of a mid 60's M20 Muncie 4-speed, Hurst shifter, McLeod Flywheel, McLeod steel scattershield with midplate, and a Centerforce dual-friction clutch and pressure plate. Differential is a early Camaro 12-bolt posi with a GM 4.10 gearset. Fuel is delivered from a NOS fuel tank via stainless steel lines and an electric fuel pump. Rear springs are custom built leaf springs. Leafs 2-4 are extra length, similar to hemi springs of the era. Squat and spring wrap are virtually non-existent. The front suspension includes NOS control arms, tie rods, etc. The front suspension and rear leafs sit on poly bushings to control roll. The frame is dampened by NOS rubber bushings for ride comfort. Gabriel Gas shocks reside at all four corners. Front brakes and spindles are 1969 Camaro disk brake units. Rear brakes are drum units. Metallic pads are at all four corners. A manual dual cylinder master pumps thru stainless steel brake lines. Brake pedal feel is very firm and predictable. Cooling is accomplished with a Be-cool 3-core aluminum radiator with stock fan and shroud. The air conditioning is not complete, the ac core and compressor are missing. The firewall unit is intact. Tunes are furnished by an underdash Sony CD/MP3 unit with Pioneer coaxial speakers. The original radio bezels are included, The dashboard is unmolested. The original automatic shifter is included in case an automatic is desired in the future.I have lost garage space and interest. The following items need to be completed:There are several minor scratches and knicks which need to be touched up and a ding on the hood from a carb stud. A local paintless repair shop said they could repair the hood for $60-$80.Install oil dipstick tube which is included. (Internal tube is properly installed.)Install remainder of interior trim which is included. Front end alignment.Engine break-in and final tune. Please ask any and all questions prior to bidding.Starting bid is $15,000. No Reserve. Funds must be verified prior to title exchange. Thanks for looking! Reid
