Vehicle Detail
1970 Pontiac Formula 400, Numbers matching survivor Up for sale is a very rare early VIN Formula 400 ( #677 of 7708). This car was a one registered vehicle up until this year. The mileage shows 47,xxx and is believed to be orginal based on documentation with the car and the overall condition of the car which I will do my best to describe. It was sold new from Dan Turpin Pontiac in Redlands, California on February 26, 1970. Documents show the car was sold by the orginal owner with 47,356 miles on it to a buyer in November of 2004 who never titled the car during his 7 year ownership and put less than 500 miles on it. It was stored in an airplane hangar for those 7 years. The previous owner to me picked the car up sometime in 2011 in Northern California where it had been it's whole life and drove it 100 miles to Southern Oregon where it was stored again. It currently is showing 47,847 miles. There is very good documentation on this car including original sales agreement showing that it sold for $4400. I also have the orginal owners manual, New vehicle warranty and protection plan, California New Vehicle Temporary ID and Pontiac Protect-O-Plate.There is a pretty extensive file with receipts that also do a good job of supporting the mileage. The motor is a matching numbers 335 horse 400 that is completely stock with no modifications. Turbo 400 shifts firm through the gears with no leaks and has no problem putting down a second gear patch. There doesn't appear to be any leaks and the car drives straight and is tight with no strange noises. Doors do not sag and windows glide up and down just like their suppose to. Underhood is clean with the engine wearing it's orginal chrome valve covers, chrome air cleaner top. Exhaust appears to be orginal with the exception of the muffler. There is an exhaust leak coming from the passenger side. I have not been able to determine the cause. The engine is very strong and has plenty of power with no hesitation. Q Jet functions as it should. This car has clearly not been beat on and is perfectly good to use as is and wouldn't hesitate to drive anywhere. It has nice options with factory air, PS, remote mirror, 160 MPH speedo and AM radio. There are reciept from 1999 where the A/C system was evacuated, and re-charged with freon but is currently not functioning but is complete with everything hooked up. The interior is all original with the exception of the carpet and looks very nice for a 42 year old car. Horn, lights, turn signals all work properly. Steering wheel has no cracks nor does the dash pad. The simulated wood on the instrument cluster looks like new and the plastic lenses are clear. Door panels are nice with one small crack on the driver's and passenger's arm rest. Gauges, cigar lighter work. The Body is very straight wit no dents. The front enduro bumper needs work around the passenger headlight due to damage caused by a dog chewing on it. The car has been re-painted once in 1984 in a shade of blue slightly lighter than the orginal Lucerne blue. It's OK for a driver but really needs to be repainted in the orginal color. Dual snorkel fiberglass hood is very nice with no stress cracks of any kind. Chrome and pot metal is very good and shinny. It's not 100% rust free but pretty darn close. The only issues are the lower edges of the front fenders caused by clogged drains and some slight bubbling on the lower right quarter panel at the very bottom. Very minor. Frame, floors, rockers, pinch welds and everything else is very nice. This would be a easy car to restore to new condition or just leave alone and drive and enjoy! Trunk is solid with original spatter paint and space saver spare. In summary this Formula is in above average condition for an unrestored 42 year old car. It is really a tough call to make whether or not to take it to the next level or just enjoy as is. This is a very nice second generation Firebird that has been well taken care of and is getting harder and harder to find in orginal condition like this one. The car is sold as-is with no warranty expressed or implied. I described the car to the best of my ability. I would welcome anyone to come view the car; you won't be dissapointed. $1000 deposit is due with 24 hours of the auction close. The final payment must be in my hands and funds clear before I will release to shipper. Please feel free to ask any questions and good luck with auction.
