Vehicle Detail
1954 Plymouth Savoy 2 dr. sedan survivor Odometer shows 58,438 , oil change sticker dated 7-8-78 shows 55,462 miles. There is a plaque in the glovebox from a car show in 1986. Bought this car with the idea of making a RestoMod – V8, new suspension, etc. but the car is so original I can't bring myself to throwing away all the great original equipment. The bulletproof flathead 6 fires up on first or second try after patting the gas 2 or 3 times, even after sitting for weeks. The steering is very tight & smooth. The brakes pull a little (right rear wheel cylinder is leaking). Parking brake works as it should. This car is well optioned – factory tinted glass, windshield washer, factory wire wheel covers, fender skirts, deluxe heater with separate heater and defroster blower (heater blower not working now) and the HyDrive Semi-Automatic.For those of you that are not familiar with the HyDrive Semi-Automatic, I offer this simple explanation. It consists of a conventional 3 speed manual transmission and clutch that is shifted manually with the clutch. Additionally it has a torque converter between the engine and and clutch that allows you to come to a full stop in any gear and not press the clutch. Then simply let off the brake and give it gas and it will accelerate. On reasonably flat roads this means you can leave it in 3rd gear and not have to shift or use the clutch in traffic. Very simple and reliable (unlike some early automatics). The car appears to have had one repaint (same color) and reupholstered many years ago - probably early 80's (there was some rust repair done at that time in floors and rear quarters with steel). The paint has a little shine but has a number of chips & cracks. The upholstery is functional but not show quality. Someone had tried to use home carpeting – it didn't fit well so I discarded it. The original rubber trunk mat was in the car when I bought it, but was brittle and cracked so I discarded it. All the lights and gauges work except the temp gauge and the dome light which has not been reinstalled. Good oil pressure and the factory electric wipers work as they should. Horn blows. Good 6 volt battery. The windows roll up/down smoothly, doors, trunk and hood operate well with good gaps. Dash and glove box are very nice. Glass is nice and front and rear window gaskets are still soft. Has original jack and a very old 6.70-15 spare that holds air. Has Sears Allstate wide whitewalls with excellent tread but old. All the stainless trim is nice with maybe a small parking lot ding or two. Grill is nice. Front bumper chrome is decent but rear bumper has surface rust. There is no broken or missing pot metal trim, still shiny but there is some pitting. All lenses in good shape. Early Mopar fans will recognize the factory gray paint inside the trunk regardless of body color. One picture shows the fender skirts, sunvisors, dome light and lens, the 3 other arm rests that were not reinstalled. Also notice the factory crayon inspection number on firewall. The fuel pump recently failed, so I temporarily wired a 12 volt electric fuel pump that I had and sat a 12 volt battery in the trunk so I could drive it. The mechanical fuel pump is available from several vendors for about $90. This car could be a daily driver with only a new fuel pump and brake service. Decided not to spend any money on the fuel pump or brakes since I was going to modify the car. This lets the new owner get the car at a lower cost and then they can decide to keep it original or RestoMod. Selling because I have 6 project cars and plan to sell 3 of them.
