For decades it has been a beloved companion on the road with a unique personality that inspired millions thanks to a combination of efficiency, durability, and an undeniable cute factor. But the world was moving on in the ‘70s, and even with all the upgrades given to the Super Beetle, a car designed in the 1930s was just no longer competitive, all that charisma notwithstanding. As a result, 1979 was the final year for Beetles in the US (although sales continued into 1980). Still adored after all these years, Beetles are a great way to enter the old car hobby: parts are plentiful, the cars are simple and easy to work on, and for the moment, they’re quite affordable, even for restored examples such as this one. This triple-black Super Beetle convertible is one of the cleanest VWs we’ve ever seen. A careful inspection of all the trouble areas, including the base of the A-pillars and the boxes under the rear seat reveals no signs of rust or other issues. The floorpan was replaced during the restoration, and the finish work is quite impressive. The doors fit well, the paint is even, and workmanship overall is very, very good. The paint is two-stage urethane, so it shines up easily and will probably look this good forever with a minimum of maintenance, and all the correct fender welting, weather seals, and other soft parts have been replaced, so it is tight and rattle-free. Most of the chrome and stainless appears original, polished and maintained and suggesting that this car has never really been out in the elements. The only notable flaw—if you can call it that—is some minor age-related cracking in the taillight lenses, visible only on close inspection. It also appears that the interior is new, featuring fresh seat covers in the proper VW vinyl, new German square-weave carpets, and new door panels. The Super Beetle received a few upgrades designed to make it more comfortable, but the basic goodness of the original design prevailed. There’s still a single round instrument housing for the speedometer and fuel gauge and a 4-speed shifter sticking out of the floor. Mileage shows 4672, but we are not sure whether that is since the restoration or if it is 104,672, but with everything being new, it’s not an issue. Burled wood appliques attempt to warm up the all-black interior and are in good condition with no fading or peeling. VW experts will note that this car was originally equipped with A/C, which was removed for some reason during the restoration, but all the original hardware is included with the car should you want to reinstall the system. The original AM/FM radio is still in the dash and fully functional, and all the switchgear works as it should. There’s a newer black convertible top, complete with insulation and proper headliner, and it stows neatly under a matching black boot. In the front-mounted trunk, there is a complete set of rubber floor mats that appear to have never been used. Late Beetles like this one were fuel injected, which improved efficiency and helped VW satisfy emissions requirements, but today it’s quite rare to find one with a fully functioning system still intact. To be honest, this car runs so well that it might be a mistake to retrofit carburetors, although that’s a popular modification. The 1585cc flat-four starts quickly and easily with that characteristic VW whistling exhaust note, and instantly settles into an even idle. On the road, performance is adequate, with good torque and a peppy feel, although traveling in a Beetle, even a Super Beetle, is to take a trip back in time, which is entirely the point. We have receipts for more than $1300 in recent maintenance work, ranging from fresh fluids to new bushings in the shifter to tighten up the feel (it’s still typical VW vague, however). New struts have also been fitted all around, and the chassis is incredibly solid and rust-free, thanks to the floorpan replacement. It tracks straight, brakes well, and drives like you would expect, and will likely continue to do so for decades to come. Flashy polished aluminum wheels with 185/80/15 blackwall radials have been fitted, so it looks sporty and may even handle slightly better than new, plus the original steel wheels are included with the sale of the car. Many experts are suggesting that with the recent spike in VW Microbus prices, high-quality Beetles cannot be far behind. Today they remain affordable fun, but the supply of unmodified, rust-free VWs is drying up, and prices have already started to move. As with any old car, rust is the enemy, particularly in a Beetle where the entire structure is tied together by sheetmetal. This one is completely rust-free and unbelievably solid, drives superbly, and looks fantastic in the best color combination. Ask any VW expert and they’ll tell you that restoring one of these to this level will put you upside-down financially before the paint has dried, so it definitely pays to buy the best one you can find. This is a fabulous example that needs exactly nothing, and you’ll probably find that in addition to a thriving enthusiast community, everyone is your friend when you’re driving a Beetle convertible. A wonderful little car that’s easy to love for all the right reasons. What else can be written about the Volkswagen Beetle that hasn’t already been said?
