Vehicle Detail
I didn't want to have to do this but I'm going to have to flip this car. I just picked it up a couple of weeks ago but sadly now it must go. The facts: 1972 RA21 ST. All stock.18RC in the hole with a 4 speed and AIR CONDITIONING. Pretty rare early dealer option A/C I gather. I assume it works but haven't run the car enough yet to know.Factory hubcaps.. kind of hard to find in decent shape.180k+ The story goes that the original owner worked for the government and travelled the country while towing a pop-up tent behind this car. There is still a trailer hitch on it that's welded to the frame in the rear.. nothing an angle grinder can't handle. The second owner only owned it since 2003 and didn't put but maybe 15k on it. The motor was replaced somewhere around 90k. There is a whole book of receipts from the life of the car... if added up I'd bet the total would top $10k easy. A lot of money was spent trying to keep this car up. The Good: It runs! It took a bit of doing but after an oil change I fired it up and drove it around a bit this weekend. The gas is really old and not making much power. Someone replaced the mechanical fuel pump with an electric at some point and that caused some confusion for me on startup since I'm used to these having the mechanical pump. I flooded it pretty good but after drying out the plugs and cylinders it fired up again. Shifts and stops fine. Hydraulics do need sorting though. Brakes are a bit vague. Bumpers are in great shape. Just a couple of minor dings. Vinyl roof. Not sure if it is factory or not but it is in really good shape. They also cause issues however, we'll get to that in a second. Door seals are in good shape and most of the window seals are still there but probably need replacing. Hood is in great shape and the flutes look like they might have been rechromed at some point. They are very nice. Trunk lid is solid. The Bad: She's had some body work done.. a few times. Suffice to say, this is why I am selling it on. I wanted to replace my 74 project with this car and just move on but after bringing it home it was apparent that this car's body has been worked on before and quite honestly, I'd rather keep doing my own work and see it done right. With this one I would have to start all over again and fix what has been "fixed" before. It's just my OCD telling me that even though I could drive this car RIGHT NOW to shows and such.. I would never be happy with it because of what lies beneath. I can provide more details on the body if needed but just know that it's a good twenty footer. Though it will definitely impress some folks at your local weekend cars and coffee meetup. There is a bit of rust showing through the respray here and there but its just surface. The trunk lip seems to have the worst of it because that seal has been bad for years. You can buy those brand new along with all of the other rubber from a couple of different sources. The interior is rough. Cracked vinyl on seats and dash and worn down foam. Just need recovering like most 70s japanese vinyl but the headrests still have the dragons in them! The seats are driveable but would need swapped pretty quick. For a bit more cash I can throw in some miata seats that I had modified to fit my 74 that I no longer need. Hood doesn't latch. Cable is broken and the helper hinge or whatever its called on the driver's side has rusted and snapped like they all do. The pitch Now. The reason for posting this BEFORE I get it running and driving is.. I want it gone. It breaks my heart to have to look at it every day and know that I can't keep it because of it's past bodywork. Someone needs to buy this car, redo the interior and just drive it.. or mod the hell out of it.. either way this car should be on the road. To be clear I have NO INTEREST in parting it... so don't ask. Someone should drive here and drive it away. Has 4 decent enough tires that hold air and I'll make sure the brakes even work for you :) Also if you buy I'll throw in some free shirts and stickers from http://www.gearheadshirts.com... seeing as how I run the place... I have lots of shirts to give away :)On Jul-30-12 at 20:25:46 PDT, seller added the following information: Updated the photos 07/30: The worst of the body work can be seen in the picture where the carpet is being lifted up. A plastic patch panel was put in to fill floor rust. It is fiberglassed down to the floor. Nothing structural was harmed here and the rust likely came from wet shoes of the driver over the years. If the buyer wants I have access to a clean floor pan that I can cut out of another celica and provide with the sale. Won't be the whole pan but it will be enough to repair this. This is the only spot on the floor that ever rusted. the rest seems to be spotless. Better pics of trunk with rust on the trunk lid and the lip below it because of the bad seal.
