Vehicle Detail
Here is a Nice Clean and very Original 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback 2 Door Wagon with 98,859 Original Miles! This very Original Squareback Wagon is an Original California car that is wearing its Original Paint and is an accident free and rust free. The Squareback is equipped with the Original 1600 cc Fuel Injected engine that runs great and starts on the first turn of the key just about every time. The Wagon is a wonderful little car with its fuel efficient and exceptionally reliable fuel injected 1600 engine and a 4 speed Manual Transmission and is equipped with extremely rare working Factory Air Conditioning. The engine runs great and always starts easily and runs beautifully with no unusual noises or smoke. Just about everything on this 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon works properly except for the in dash clock which seems to be a fairly common issue with most of these older VW's and most Classic cars in general and I believe the annoying Seat Belt Warning Buzz has been unplugged.....otherwise every single light and accessory works as it should and all is in good operating condition. This 1972 Squareback Wagon is an Original California car that was sold New at Rob Himsl Volkswagen in San Jose California on Monday June 5, 1972 to its original female owner who lived in San Jose California. According to the Service Records and Maintainence Receipts, this nice original 96,8 Original Mile Squareback was Serviced by Volkswagen Dealers in California all through its 2 year/24,000 Mile Warranty and then the original owner continued having the Squareback Wagon Serviced at Volkswagen Dealers at least through 1977 with the car showing just 33,000 miles. According to the Service Records and some of the other Maintainence receipts along with other paperwork, this 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon spent most of its life owned by two Female Owners up through 2011. It appears as though this Nice Original Squareback Wagon had 3 owners over the last 40 + years and all lived within 45 minutes of one another making this Lifelong California car the nice clean and extremely Original Survivor that you see here today. This 1972 Squareback Wagon was always in California and as you can see it still has its Blue & Yellow California License Plates which have been on the car since it was sold new back in June of 1972! Yes those are the Original License Plates that were issued to this 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon when it was Brand New and they have been on the car ever since!!!! The Wagon is still titled and registered with the Original Blue & Yellow California Plates "584 FCL" which are shown on the registration and title and the mileage is shown as "actual mileage". How cool is that? I doubt that there are many Original 1972 Volkswagen Type III Wagons around equipped with Factory Air Conditioning which are still wearing their Original Paint and their Original License Plates! The engine runs excellent and appears to be extremely original with its original and very efficient factory fuel injection which was often replaced on these cars in favor of the dual carburetor induction. That is not the case with this Original Squareback as the original Fuel Injection works perfectly and the car runs great with no mechanical issues that I am aware of. The engine runs strong and starts easily and has that wonderful VW sound that is unlike any other. Nothing sounds quite like a stock original air cooled Volkswagen engine! The engine makes plenty of power and the car seems to be quite comfortable at Highway speeds with its sweet spot right at 65 mph although Ive had it running comfortable at 80 mph with no issues. The Squareback just seems to be most comfortable running down the highway at 65 mph which is fine with me as the Speed Limit in most places here is 55 mph although we have roadways like the PA Turnpike and sections of Interstate 95 which have a Speed Limit of 65 mph. Either way the cute little Squareback Wagon seems to enjoy running along at highway speeds or cruising around town at any speed. The Transmission works just fine and shifts effortlessly through the gears with a great clutch. The car still retains its original Shifter which works perfectly and looks nice with the Original Rubber Boot at the base of the Shifter which goes into the Floor under the Original carpets and the Original Shift knob is in Nice original condition. The Squareback Wagon drives very nice down the road and steers great with no unusual play in the steering and is a real pleasure to drive. The Brakes work great and will stop the car quite easily with the recently rebuilt Front Disc Brakes which have new Rotors, Rebuilt Calipers, New Brake Pads, New Brake Lines etc etc. The car drives beautifully and steers and stops just as well. There are some receipts for the work mentioned above and some of the parts were obviously replaced which could be seen when I had the front wheels off while doing a Brake Inspection. There are also many other receipts for work that was done to the car over the last few years that I will cover further into the description. This is a great driving 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon that is a lot of fun to drive and it gets great gas mileage making this not only a Cool Classic car to drive to local car club cruise night events but its also a wonderful car to use as a daily driver as the gas mileage is fantastic. The cars electrical components are in excellent working order with everything working as it should from the Headlights, High & Low Beams, Parking/Running Lights, Taillights, Turn Signals, License Plate Light, Brake Lights, Reverse Lights, All Dash Lights, Interior Dome Light, 4 Way Emergency Flashers, Windshield Wipers, Heater & Defroster, Air Conditioning, Rear Window Defroster, CD Stereo System, Gas Gauge, Speedometer, Odometer, Trip Odometer, Floor Mounted Heater Levers, Emergency Brake, All Warning Lights which come on when you turn the key on before you start the car .... literally everything works in this 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon except for Seat Belt Warning Buzzer and the Dash Mounted Clock which is an easy fix if you wanted to have it repaired. There is a Sony CD Stereo located under the Air Conditioning Unit below the Dash which is the exact location as the Factory Radio and it was tastefully installed to look as though it was a factory installed unit. The Speakers were nicely mounted and secured under the Front Seats and the system sounds very good. I dont listen to the Radio much while Im driving my Classic cars but this Sony CD Stereo System not only sounds fine for my taste but I was thrilled that it was installed exactly as the Factory Original Radio. I dont like seeing these old cars with the Dashes cut up or the Door Panels butchered up just for the sake of listening to the Radio. The Radio installation was very nicely done and this is the only non original piece in the car outside of common maintainence items. The Door Lock and Unlock with the Keys including the Rear Hatch and the Doors Open & Close Beautifully with a Nice decisive thud. There are no problems with the doors either sagging and no worn out hinges, locks or strikers and the Doors Open and Close really nice. The Original Door Weather Stripping is still nice as are the Original Rubber Window Sweeps. This is just a nice well kept original car thats always been well maintained and considering that its 40 years old and unrestored, its a very nice running and driving car that still looks nice after all these years. Its not perfect by any means as its a 40 year old car but its a nice Original Squareback Wagon that always starts and runs out real nice and tracks nicely down the road with everything working as it should. The Body on this 1972 Squareback Wagon is in great condition with no rust issues. The Squareback is wearing all Original Body Panels and the Original Factory applied Paint and there are no signs of any accidents or previous body repair or damage. This 1972 Squareback Wagon has a Super Nice Original Body with Beautiful Original Body Panels with Nice Original Gaps and nice Body Panel Fit and Finish. The Doors Open and Close Beautifully and the same goes for the Hood and the Rear Hatch. The Rockers Panels and the Wheel Houses are Exceptionally Nice and Rust Free! The Bottoms of the Fenders, Doors, Rear Quarter Panels and the Rear Hatch show absolutely no rust or rust repair... its never had any rust in any of these areas which are prone to rust. Its just a really nice solid Original California body that will not disappoint anyone who knows these cars or anyone who is looking for a Nice well maintained Original Squareback Wagon. The car is not without some flaws after 40 years. There are some normal minor dings and scratches but nothing tragic by any means. This Squareback Wagon still presents itself very nicely from every angle and is a nice little Wagon that can be used as daily transportation or as a Collector car. These cars are difficult to find in this condition anywhere and even in California where these cars seem to be more abundant, you would be hard pressed to find one with a body as nice and original as this Squareback Wagon! As you can see from the photos, the Original Factory applied 40 year old Paint still shines up quite nice and looks nice but there are some spots where there have been minor brush touch ups from chips in the paint which come from driving any car on the road but absolutely no paint work done and no body repairs from accidents or any rust or rust repairs. The Paint still shines up nicely but is 40 years old so its not perfect but it still has a very cool original look or Patina if you will and the car always gets thumbs up or people honking their horns when they see you cruising up the road in this very cool little Squareback Wagon. The Paint does have various imperfections after 40 years and some spots along the edge of the roof drip rail where the paint is a little thin along with some spots on the roof where there seems to be some small stained areas but overall the car looks quite nice after a wash and wax... not perfect but a very nice looking Squareback with a great Original appearance! The Original Rocker Panels and the Wheel Houses still look beautiful and the Original Floor Pan is absolutely amazing with no signs of rust anywhere. The Floors were factory undercoated and in some places the Undercoating has flaked off to reveal the nice original Black Paint on the Floors. Another interesting thing about this Squareback Wagon is the Factory Air Conditioning and the way that its run from front to back on this car with the original Compressor located on the engine of course and the Air Conditioning lines running under the car along the Passenger side Rocker/Floor which make their way to the AC Dryer which is found in the Passenger side front inner fender and the Original AC Condensor is located under the Front of the car behind the Spare Tire Well. This is a very interesting Original Factory Air Conditioning set-up that is all Original and works very well and especially at Highway Speeds where the AC gets nice and cool! The engine Compartment in the Rear of the Wagon still shows Nice Original Paint around the engine which is amazing considering the age of this vehicle. We simply dont see VW's like this on the East Coast as they were all rusted away back in the 70's but thats not the case with this Squareback as it spent its entire life in California until several months ago when it was brought to Pennsylvania. Its just incredible to see a body like this on any car on the East Coast let alone a Volkswagen Squareback! The Original Door Jams still look Outstanding with Nice Original Paint and the Original Door Hinges and Lock Assemblies are Super Nice with the Factory finish still in great condition. The Drivers Side Door Jam still has its Original Volkswagen Vin Decal which also shows the car as being built in February of 1972 and the Decal still looks like new. The Original Chrome Mirrors are still in place on the Drivers Side and Passenger Side Doors and they still look nice and work just fine with easy adjustment and nice original Glass Mirrors. The Original Amber Parking Light Lenses which Mount just above the Front Bumper on each Side are in Nice Original condition and Light properly whether your running them for Parking Lights or as Turn Signals. The Headlights work properly and the Chrome on the Headlight Bezels are still in Nice Original condition. The Original Chrome Door Handles are still quite Nice and not only operate smoothly with no problems and Lock & Unlock with the Keys. The Rear Tailgate Hatch Handle still has nice chrome and the Hatch Opens and Closes easily and Locks properly with the key. The Back Bumper does have a small dent just to the left of dead center but its barely noticeable unless your right up looking for it but otherwise the rear bumper is nice with good original chrome and the original Black rubber Bumper strip still in place. There is an Original Parking Permit Decal for San Fransisco County from 1990 which I chose to leave on the car just because it is part of the cars history so you can either leave it there or remove it. I think its cool so I left it there! The Front Bumper is Nice and Straight although the chrome on the top flat section of the Bumper is showing some age while the rest the lower section of the front bumper along with the Black Rubber Bumper strip look very nice. The Windshield as well as the rest of the Original Glass in the car is very nice from front to back with no problems... just nice clean original glass. The Original Wheels are in Nice condition and all of the Original VW Hubcaps are Nice and Shiny and the Original Hubcap Removal Tool is still in the Original Tool Kit. The Tires still have plenty of tread and the car drives very well on the tires which are the correct Original Size that Volkswagen called for on these cars which is 165R15. The Trunk area is located under the front Hood of the car and is in beautiful condition and opens easily with its Original Lever located inside the Glovebox. Under the front Hood area you will find the Original Jack which stands upright just to the left of the Spare Tire. The Original Lining under the Hood that covers the entire under Hood area is still in beautiful condition and looks like new along with the original Jack and the Original Tool Kit which is still wrapped in the Original Tool Bag. Keep in mind that everything under the Hood is Original and just really nice clean Original! This entire area under the front Hood is just super nice for a 40 year old Volkswagen and even the Original Cadium Plated Hood Latch looks like new. The Original Jack is held upright in its storage area and still looks great with the Original Factory Decal still in place next to the Jack. The Original Windshield Washer Bottle still looks super nice and the Original Factory Installed Operation Decal is still in place alongside the top of the Washer Bottle Cap and Washer Line which is connected to the Spare Tire which supplies the air pressure to operate the Windshield Washer. This is a very unique but effective set-up and one that I have only seen in Volkswagen vehicles over the years. It seems as though Volkswagen made great use of space as well as making things easy enough for just about anyone to work on their cars. Alongside the Front Hood Latch area you will see the Original Volkswagen Body Plate which I have shown in pictures below along with a secondary plate with other Numbers which is also shown in pictures below. The Original Paint on the Underside of the Hood is still in Beautiful Original condition as you will see as well. Other simple little things like the Original Gas Filler Neck is under the Gas Door which is found on the Passenger side front fender still operates perfectly when you pull the Door Release which is found just under the right side of the Dash below the Glovebox Door. The Original Gas Filler Door opens easily and inside you will find the Original Factory Installed Decal still looking like it was installed recently instead of 40 years ago along with the Original VW Gas Cap which is also in nice original condition. Its the little details like this that set nice original cars apart from those that have been mistreated, neglected or even damaged in one way or another over the years. That is not the case with this Nice Original Squareback Wagon! Overall the exterior of this 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon looks very nice and has a wonderful original body and original paint that still has a very cool clean look. You will not be disappointed with this Original Survivor 1972 Squareback Wagon. Finding an Original car from this era that is still wearing its Original Paint and all Original Trim, Chrome and Glass is not something that you see everyday and especially in the rustfree condition of this cool Wagon. Keep in mind that the Paint is the Original Factory applied paint that was done when the car was new and it shows absolutely no signs of any paint work or any accident damage or rust or rust repairs. The Original Paint still has a very Good Overall look but its not without its imperfections as with any car thats 40 years old and thats been driven 98,000 miles. All I can say is that I like the car just the way it is and everyone that has looked at the Wagon was shocked that it was still wearing its Original Paint and that the car was as solid and rustfree as it is. This car has a wonderful Patina and would bring a smile to any Volkswagen enthusiast. If you wanted the car to be perfect then I suggest that you buy a show car but if you like nice clean Original cars that have always been loved and well maintained then this just might be the car for you. This 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon is a very cool Survivor car thats fairly Rare with its Original Paint, Low Miles, Original Factory Installed Fuel Injection and the Super Rare working Factory Installed Air Conditioning and all of this in a car thats ready to be driven anywhere! The Interior in this 1972 Type III Squareback Wagon is very clean from front to back. The Bucket Seats and Rear Seat are the only things that have been restored in the interior and the Front and Rear Seats looks absolutely beautiful. They are extremely comfortable and they look great! The Carpets are the Factory Originals and look very nice with very little wear except for a spot on the passenger side rear which is no big deal but I thought Id mention it. The Original Door Panels are Nice and very clean with no damage and they fit nearly as well as they did back in 1972. The Original Door Pockets which are located on the Lower section of the Door Panels are Super Nice and are not ripped or all stretched out like others that I have seen over the years. They are just super nice! The same goes for the Armrest which are Black in color which seems to be one of those Volkswagen things where they used several colors as in this car where they used Black & Tan. The Dash is a Good example as they used the Tan Paint on the Dash with the Black Dash Pad and Black Grab Bar.... well the same goes for the Door Panels which are a Nice Tan color with the Original Black Armrest. The Armrest are Super Nice on both front door panels and look great. The Rear Seat is Beautiful and is extremely comfortable as well and as you can see the Side Panels in the Back Seat area are Tank with the Black Armrest and the Black Seat Belts as well as Black Ashtrays. The same goes for the Shoulder & Lap Belt Seat Belts in the front which are also Black and all are in Good working condition. The Rear Seat area also has the Pull Straps on both sides which are there to make it easier for Rear Seat Passengers to get out of the Rear Seat. The Pull Straps are in great shape and are a really great idea for these cars as its not always easy to get out of the Rear Seat of a 2 Door car. Its little things like this that kept Volkswagen one step ahead of other auto manufacturers when it came to the simple things. The Rear Cargo area also has the Tan colored Panels which are a nice addition to the rear of these Squareback Wagons. The Rear Wheel Houses are covered in the Factory Vinyl which is still in very nice Original condition and the Tan Vinyl Panels are on each side of the Cargo area which makes it look much more cozy inside. The Rear Cargo area is an interesting area in these cars as this is where the engine compartment can be found under the Rear of the Cargo Floor which has a Special Hinged Door thats made for easy removal and this is all covered with Nice Tan Vinyl to keep the Cargo area looking nice and clean. The Original Headliner is in good Original condition and it houses the Factory Interior Dome Light which is located on the Drivers Side of the car just behind the Drivers Side Door up in the headliner. This Interior Dome Light works perfectly and comes on automatically when you open either the drivers side or passenger side doors. Its just the perfect amount of light to keep the interior well lit although I often thought it would have been a good idea to have added another Dome Light to the Rear Cargo area just so you could clearly see what you were doing if you were unloading some groceries or anything else for that matter from the Rear of the Wagon in the evening. The Rear Cargo area has a Rubber Mat that covers the Rear Cargo Floor and its Nice and Clean although I have seen several cars that guys have added a carpet to the rear cargo area which is said to not only make this area more appealing to the eye but they also can help to quiet any noise that might escape the rear mounted engine area. I like the idea of the Rear Carpeted Cargo area strictly for the comfort and look but I dont believe these are necessary to quiet any interior engine noise as there is virtually none once the factory insulated engine cover is installed. Another nice thing about the Rear Cargo area is that it is much roomier that you might expect and once you've folded down the rear seat, there is quite a bit of room for loading just about any cargo that the average guy would need for moving things for the family or for his home. The Rear Seat Folds Down in a matter of a minute and is easy enough for anybody to use. This makes for one nice sized cargo area that is nice and neat throughout and should be good enough for just about anyones needs! The Rear Tailgate/Hatch is also a beautiful Original piece that is partially covered in the Factory Tan Vinyl and partically Painted in the same color as the rest of the interior metal parts like the Dash and around the Doors. This Factory Vinyl Hatch Covering is in excellent original condition as is the factory painted section that covers the rest of the interior section of the Rear Hatch. The lower section of the Cargo area at the very Rear of the car has an area that steps down for closing of the Rear Hatch and this is where the Original VW Oil Filler Cap is located as you will see in the pictures. This Original Oil Fill Cap is the Original Volkswagen part and it still looks great and is located in an area that makes it quite easy for adding Oil during Oil Changes. The Rear Hatch Glass has the Rear Window Defroster option and it seems to be in nice original condition with no damage.... just a nice clean original Rear Window with a Nice Original Rear Window Defroster which is operated from the Switch on the Dash. The Dash has a Beautiful Original Instrument Cluster with Nice Clean Gauges with Crisp Numbers and coloring in the Speedometer, Gas Gauge and the Clock. The Plastic Lense that covers the Gauges are Super Nice with no apparent scratches and the Silver Coloring around the perimeter of the Gauge Lenses is still quite nice as well. The Original Tan Colored Paint on the Lower section of the Dash is beautiful and the Original Painted Ashtray still shows the 4 Speed Transmission Shift Pattern in White. All of the Original Dash Knobs are in Nice Original condition and all seem to work as they were intended with no known issues. The 4 Way Flasher knob looks great with nice Original coloring with the Red Center and works perfectly. The Heater Knobs all work as they should and are nice and clean including the Heater and Fresh Air Knobs that are located on the Dash. The Factory Heater Temperature Lever and the Heater Distribution Levers are located on the Floor just between the 2 Bucket Seats and on either side of the Emergency Brake Handle. If your not familiar with this rather unique system then you are in for a real treat as these can take a little while to Master but once you've got them figured out then you will be quite surprised at just how effective this system is at keeping the car warm on colder days and how nice the fresh air vents can be on those days where its just a little stuffy but not quite warm enough to warrant turning the Air Conditioning on. The Original Black Dash Pad still shows nicely but has a couple of minor cracks which seems to be fairly common on lifelong California cars. The Original Dash Pad Mounted Black Grab Bar on the Passenger Side of the Dash is very Nice and still serves its suprose if you need a little assistance getting in or out of the Wagon. Below the Dash you will find the Factory Installed Air Conditioning Unit which looks much like many of the Factory Air Conditioning Units found in other cars from the early 70's. The Volkswagen Unit is for all intents and purposes the same unit as those AC Units found on other cars and works pretty much the same as any other Under Dash AC Unit. There is a an On/Off Switch for the AC which mounts to the far left just to the right of the Steering Column and this Switch also doubles as a Fan with 3 Positions of Low, Medium and High. There is a second knob next to that which Controls the Temperature which is used to help find the desired Cooling range,,,,,, basically its like a Manual Climate Control. The Air Conditioning works just fine although it works much better at Highway Speeds or at Higher RPM's and gets nice and cold when your cruising down the highway. The Air Conditioning was recently serviced by an old school mechanic in my area who just happen to have a couple of Pounds of the old R12 Refrigerant that really made the difference in this Air Conditioning System as it was working but just wasnt blowing cold enough. Now it blows cold but as I said, its much better when your cruising on the Highway at higher rpm's. I was really surprised at how nicely the Air Conditioning Cooled the interior of the Squareback Wagon while I was cruising down Interstate 95. It was great to feel the old AC working as it was intended. The Air Conditioning in these cars is much the same as most any other air conditioning unit but with the little 1600 engine, the Squareback Wagons Air Conditioning doesnt blow quite as cold at lower speeds like many cars for that matter and thats why I mentioned that it works better at Highway speeds. Its a noticeable difference when your cruising down the Highway as opposed to driving around the city streets but I guess the same could be said for just about any air conditioned car from this era. The bottom line is, this 1972 Squareback Wagon has working factory Air Conditioning and that in itself is quite rare! The Original Locking Steering Column still works as it should as does the Original Ignition Key Buzzer which makes a very annoying sound when you leave the key in the Ignition with the Door Open. Even the Original Headlight Switch works as it should which will not allow you to put the Headlights on without the key in the on position and also keeps you from leaving the Headlights on without removing the key which is turn will keep you from running your battery dead. The Original Gas Gauge works just as it should and seems to be very accurate and the same goes for the Speedometer and Odometer as well as the Trip Odometer. These all work just fine and are nicely placed in the Dash which makes for easy viewing while driving the car. All of the Dash Lights are Nice and Bright when you are cruising in the evening and it makes keeping an eye on your Gauges much easier when you can actually see them at night with your brightly lit dash. This is a big bonus as many of these older cars have elecrical issues and very rarely do all of the lights work properly but thats not the case with this Squareback Wagon as absolutely everything works as it should except for the clock. The Original Glovebox Door Opens easily and is in very nice condition both on the outside and the inside with a very nice Original Glovebox liner and the Original Tire Capacity Decal is still on the underside of the Glovebox door and still looks like new. The Gloxebox still has its Original Owners Manual, Original Volkswagen Diagnosis Coupons Booklet and the Original Volkswagen Emission Control System & Maintainance Requirement and Warranty Booklet. Its just nice to see these Original pieces of Factory Literature & Service Records with the car after 40 years as many times things like these are long gone. This is another testament of the care that this Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon received over the years! Under the Glovebox and across the lower section of the Dash you will see the Rare Optional & Original Volkswagen Air Conditioning Unit that is in nice Original condition and it actually works just fine. This is said to be an extremely Rare Option on these cars and I know that I have never seen another one of these cars with working factory air conditioning or even non working air for that matter. This has got to be one super rare option. The Original Headliner is in real Nice overall condition except for a couple of small holes in the very rear of the Headliner just in front of the Rear Cargo Hatch which is likely from somebody loading the Cargo area with something and it most likely came up just a little too high and poked a couple of small holes in the very rear in between the rear cargo hatch hinges. This is by no means a big deal and the Headliner is in very Nice overall condition so I wouldnt touch it as it doesnt appear to be brittle and they are so minor in my opinion that I just wouldnt bother touching it. The Rear Tailgate or Rear Hatch Door works just fine and Locks and Unlocks with the Keys. The Rear Hatch Mounted License Plate is still the Original that was installed at Rob Himsl Volkswagen in San Jose California back on June 5, 1972 and it still looks quite nice after 40 years and the Original License Plate Light works as it should when you turn either the Parking Lights or Headlights on. It lights up the License Plate quite nicely. As I mentioned eariler, the Doors Open and Close nicely and Lock and Unlock with the keys as they should and the Windows Roll Up & Down nicely and seal great. The Original Wing Windows work perfectly as well and I gotta tell you, one of the things that I miss most about today's newer cars is the lack of Wing Windows. They are just so helpful and can really make a warm day much more pleasant with the cross flow of air from factory Wing Windows! I guess from here out I will let the pictures speak for themselves. This is just a really cool Original Paint Survivor 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon with the 1600 engine and the factory Fuel Injection along with its 4 speed Manual Transmission. This car has an Outstanding Original Body in my opinion as there is no rust or cancer or any type of rust repair. The car is just a really cool and very Original Squareback that spent its entire life in California up until several months ago when it came to Pennsylvania after being purchased from a gentleman who purchased the car from one of its longtime female owners. This is a car thats always been loved and well maintained and outside of some minor door dings and some various imperfections in its Original Paint, this car is just a wonderful Original example and exceptionally rare with the Factory Air Conditioning! This 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon is a very clean Original car with 96,000 Original Miles and wearing its Original Factory applied paint. This Squareback Wagon was sold new in San Jose California at Rob Himsl Volkswagen to its Original Female owner and it would stay with its Original owner for many years. The Squareback has the Original 1600 engine which still retains its original Bosch D-Jetronic Fuel Injection system that is exceptionally reliable and incredibly fuel efficient. This Squareback Wagon was always well maintained over the years and is a nice original example of a well loved original Type III Squareback Wagon. The Original 4 Speed Transmission shifts flawlessly and the Clutch works perfectly. The car starts easily with the first turn of the key on most occasions and it runs great with no unusual noises or smoke. This Wagon was owned by a female for many years and eventually made its way to another female owner who kept the little Squareback running well and there are Service Receipts showing that the car was always kept in good operating condition. There are recent receipts for New Brake Rotors, New Brakes, New Calipers,Rebuild Generator, Replace Wheel Bearings, New Brake Lines, All New Fuel Lines Front and Rear, Fuel Tank Removed Cleaned and Reinstalled, New Battery, New Generator Belt, Tune Up including Plugs, Cap, Rotor, Wires, Points, Adjust Timing, New Fuel Filters, Repair Horn, Adjust Valves, Lube Frontend, Adjust Rear Brakes, Service Fuel Injection, etc etc. These are just some of the repairs that were made within the last couple of years as this Squareback was used as her daily transportation and she wanted to keep the car running reliably. There are also many Service Stamps from Various Volkswagen Dealers in California from 1972-1977 as the car was apparently Dealer Serviced for many years. This 1972 Type III Squareback Wagon was always kept in good running condition by its previous owners and the same goes for me as I enjoy driving this car from time to time as its just so much fun and turns more heads that many Classic cars that Ive owned over the years. Its just one of those cars that everyone seems to love and many people seem to have a Volkswagen story to share with you when you get to talking about the car. I bought this Squareback with the intentions of keeping this cute little Wagon but as is often the case, our lives and priorities change and so I must part with this nice Original Survivor car. There is nothing quite like a nice Original Paint car in my opinion as there is no hiding any previous shoddy repairs and you know exactly what your getting. This Original Paint Squareback Wagon with its Original Drivetrain and its Original and Super rare Factory Air Conditioning is a very unsual find by anyones standards as there were very few of these cars built with the optional factory air conditioning. The car has so many cool original pieces on it and so many things that make it stand apart from some of the other Squarebacks that I was considering before I finally decided on this one. Just take a look at the overall originality of this car from the Factory Original Paint to its extremely Original engine compartment which still shows the factory paint inside the rear mounted engine box which is almost always either completely gone or rusted away. The Original Tan/Beige Paint around the engine in the rear engine compartment is still nice as you will see in the pictures. The engine still retains its original Fuel Injection which operates very well and the car gets great gas mileage! This is just another testament to its good original condition as many people convert the Fuel Injection over to the dual carburetor set-up but thats not the case with this very Original 1972 Type III Squareback Wagon. The Nice Clean Original Dash and the fact that everything is in good working condition is another thing that you rarely see on any 40 year old car let alone a Volkswagen. Then there is the very clean original Trunk or the Underside of the Front Hood area that looks like new with all of the original equipment and original decals along with the factory Tool Kit and the Beautiful Original Front Trunk Mat. This is just one of those nice original cars thats never been involved in an accident nor has it had any rust or rust repair. There are things like the original finish on the Hood Latch components and the Original paint in the Door Jams along with the nice original Factory Decals in the Door Jams and in the Glovebox as well as the Jack Decal & Windshield Washer Decals under the Hood.... these may seem to be little things but the fact that they are all still there and looking like new says a lot about a car. The Interior still looks great with its beautiful original Dash Paint and super nice original Instrument Cluster with excellent original working gauges. All of the Original Air Conditioning components are in very nice shape and most importantly it works! Overall this is a Nice Original 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon Survivor that is wearing its Original Paint. The little Wagon still presents itself quite nicely although there are some minor door dings and various imperfections in the paint. The Paint still looks too nice in my opinion to have it repainted but if your a perfectionist then maybe you would consider painting the car someday. I like the cool Orignal Patina of this all Original 1972 Squareback and I wouldnt touch it as it just looks too clean and Original to have it repainted. This is of course my opinion and everyone that has seen the car has agreed that the car just looks so cool and clean with just the right patina that they agreed that the car should be left alone. The Interior in this car is extremely nice overall with very little in the way of wear and I dont think I would do anything to the interior as it looks very clean from the Dash to the Rear Hatch or Tailgate. The Seats are Super Nice and they Adjust properly and all of the Original Retractable Seat Belts work as they should. The Door Panels and all of the interior side panels are very nice. The Carpets are Original and still look great except for a small spot on the passenger side rear which is nothing that really stands out and the carpets are just too nice overall to consider replacing anything. The Headliner looks very nice as you'll see in the pictures with the only sign of wear being in the very rear and they are certainly not worthy of replacing anything. The Interior as a whole is very nice as you will see in the pictures and I think you'll agree that the interior looks great. The engine always starts easily and runs great with no issues. The engine makes no unusual noises and it makes plenty of power to run the little Squareback Wagon at Highway speeds and is lots of fun to drive around town as well. The engine is still quite clean with the original engine numbers still visible on the engine and some of the factory ink or silk-screened stampings still visible on various engine parts. The engine was recently tuned and the Oil was changed so its running great and is extremely dependable. The engine still looks fairly clean from the underside with a nice aluminum finish. Its not new by any means but still quite clean considering the nature of these engines. The Transmission shifts effortlessly with a great working clutch and there are never any problems finding gears. It shifts as smoothly as possible and the transmission seems to be in excellent working order. When you put the Transmission into Reverse, the Reverse Lights still light up nice and bright which is another nice thing about this car.... absolutely every light and accessory works properly in this car except for the clock. The Undercarriage is by far the most solid original that I have seen on any car thats 40+ years old and the Original Floor Pans and all Bracing, Rockers, etc etc are in Excellent Rust Free condition. The Factory Undercoating can be seen in the pictures that you'll see below and you'll also see a few places where the Factory Undercoating has come off and the Original Black Painted Metal Floor Pan underneath is like new or as good as it gets on any 40+ year old car. Its just amazing solid from front to back! Ok well I think Ive covered just about everything there is to cover on this 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon or at least as much as I could think of. Please feel free to ask questions before you bid so you know exactly what your bidding on as I would like the new owner to be happy with his or her purchase. This Squareback Wagon is a Nice Clean Original Paint Survivor car that is free of any rust or accident damage and the body is as solid as a rock. The car has a nice clean overall appearance and although the Original paint still has a Nice Clean look and wonderful Patina, its not flawless but show me any 40 year old car with 98,000 miles that has flawless original paint. There is no such thing! The pictures should give you a really good idea as to the condition of the car as I have taken many pictures so that you know exactly what your bidding on. This is a very nice Original Survivor car that was always well loved and maintained and it runs and drives great. The car comes with its Original Owners Manual and its Original Emission Control System & Maintainance Requirements & Warranty Booklet and its Original Warranty Maintainance Coupon Booklet and a Large Official Service Manual that Specifically Covers all 1968-1969-1970-1971-1972-1973 Volkswagen Fastback and Squareback Models. This Service Manual is a wealth of information that covers everything from changing fuses to engine rebuilds... You name it and its in there... just a wonderful Book to have if you own one of these vehicles. There are also Service Records from 2 of the cars owners. I have receipts showing some of the work that was done to the Squareback in the last few years which include much of the work that I mentioned eariler in the auction. The car will also come with its Original California Registration and the Original Blue & Yellow California Plates will go with the car if the car is going to a New Owner in California only. This 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon is a very good Original example of a really cool and unique body style with its Original Paint, Original Factory Fuel Injected 1600 engine and Rare Original Working Factory Air Conditioning. These little Squareback Wagons are super reliable and make great daily drivers with their economical and fuel efficient 1600 4 Cylinder Fuel Injected engines combined with the 4 Speed Manual Transmission. This car is not only easy to drive but its an absolute pleasure to cruise down the highway on a hot Summer day with the air conditioning on. This is one of those cars that just likes to be driven if you know what I mean. I used this car for a month driving it back and forth to work during a heat wave where the temperatures rose to 90+ literally everyday and the little Squareback Wagon never let me down. Its always started easily and runs well with no known issues outside of the fact that its a 40 year old car. Its been a lot of fun to say the least. I know it can be a little nerve wracking to spend your hard earned money on a car that you've never seen before. I have been there before so I completely understand how difficult it can be to spend your hard earned money on a car that you've never seen and sending it to a complete stranger can be stressful. I strongly suggest that you come and see the car in person if your able so that you know exactly what you are bidding on or purchasing. I will make myself available to show you the car if you call and we can make arrangements to get together so that you can check the car out and give it a good look and a nice ride. If your unable to come and see the car in person then maybe you can have a friend come and look the car over for you. There are many VW guys out there and there seems to be quite a few different clubs & forums so finding a well informed VW enthusiast to inspect the Squareback for you should not be a problem. If you cant find somebody to look the car over for you then there are many professional auto inspectors and even classic car specific auto inspectors who you can hire to come out and look the car over for you. These guys are easy to find on the internet or in publications such as Hemmings and they will come out and inspect the car for you and even take pictures so that you get a complete and unbiased report on the car. This is a great way to get a little peace of mind before you spend your money. You are also welcome to call me if you'd like and I will go over the car with you panel by panel and from bumper to bumper and from the tires to the roof. I will cover it all and literally go over every nick on the car so feel free to call me with any questions or concerns. The Taillight and License Plate Light are on in this picture and you can see the reflection from the License Plate Light in the Rear Bumper. There is a little ding in the Lower Rear Window Trim towards the lower right hand side. The Window Seal is in excellent condition and the same goes for the Hatch. The Hatch Opens and Closes easily and Locks & Unlocks with the Keys! ABOVE: This Pictures shows the Roof of the Squareback Wagon and as you can see the paint shines enough to show the reflection of the trees in the background. The Original Front Windshield Seal and Trim is in nice condition. There are some imperfections in the Original Paint but as you can see, the paint still shines nicely! ABOVE: The Front Hood Open reveals the Super Nice Original Trunk lining or Trunk Mat and the Original Gas Tank is underneath and looks as new with Original Factory Inspection markings on the Tank in Grease Pencil which I will show in another photo. Notice the Nice Original Cadium colored plating on the Latch assembly just in front of the Spare Tire & the same colored Original Plating on the Latch sticking out from the front of the Hood. The Spare Tire sits upright in the front of the car as seen in the picture and the Jack Mounts Upright on the Passenger side just to the left of the Spare Tire. The Windshield Washer Bottle is mounted to the right of the Spare Tire with the Red Cap and the Line that runs to the Spare tire as the Air Pressure from the Spare Tire is what pressurizes the Windshield Washer...very interesting sert-up and I have never seen anything like on any other car. It seems to be a good way of utilizing all of the space effectively! The Paint on this car seems to take on different colors or at least the color appears different depending on the lighting. This pictures shows the paint as more White than some of the others which show the car as Beige and others show it as Yellow! ABOVE: The Original Gas Tank which is located under the Front Trunk Mat under the Hood of the car. You can that there is absolutely no rust under the Front Mat and the Factory Paint is still quite nice under the Mat. There is an Original Yellow Grease Pencil Marking on the front corner of the Fuel Tank that was done at the Volkswagen Assembly Plant. This car is exceptionally Original and as solid as a rock ABOVE: The Jack Mounts Upright on the Passenger Side Front of the car next to the Spare Tire. Notice the Original Factory Installed Silver & Black Decal on the Panel next to the Jack. Its written in German so I imagine it says Jack or something to that affect. The Jack is complete and in Excellent condition and the car still has the Original Factory Tool Bag with a few basic Tools that Volkswagen supplied for basic simple roadside repairs. Pictures of the Tool Kit are Below. ABOVE: The Drivers Side Front under the Hood is where the Windshield Washer Reservouir is mounted upright with the Red Cap on top with the Rubber line that runs to the Spare Tire to allow the proper air pressure to Spray the Windshield Washer onto the Windshield. The Original Decal is still there in Silver with Red lettering and looks like new! ABOVE: The Original Volkswagen Tool Kit which comes with some basic tools for simple roadside repairs and the little "U" shaped piece in the front is specifically for removing the Factory Hubcaps which have little holes on the side of the Caps and you simply put the open ends into the holes in the Hubcaps and pull them off! ABOVE: This is the Original Volkswagen Body Tag thats mounted on the Front Support under the Hood just to the left of the Hood Latch and in front of the Spare Tire. The Paint on the underside of the Hood and across the Front Support is very nice. ABOVE: This is the Hood Latch on the underside of the Hood. I took this picture to show just how nice the original Plating is on the Original Hardware...amazing after 40 years that the latches still look this nice... many guys go to the trouble to restore their Hood Latches and various other pieces of Hardware to get this finish! ABOVE: The Interior in this 1972 Squareback Wagon is very nice and clean from the Dash all the way to the Rear Hatch and Cargo area. The Seats are Beautiful as well as being very comfortable and all of the Seat Adjustments work properly. The Original Dash is Nice and Clean with a Beautiful Instrument Cluster... just a really clean Interior that needs absolutely nothing to be enjoyed now. ABOVE: The Nice Original Dash shows well with a Beautiful Original Instrument Cluster and Super Nice Original Painted Section of the Dash & Glovebox Door. The Factory Air Conditioning Unit is in great shape and most importantly, it works and blows cold! The Sony CD Stereo is located under the Air Conditioning in the exact location as the factory Radio which was removed to install the Sony Stereo. The Carpets are the Factory Installed Originals and although they show some minor wear and could stand to be cleaned up a little, they are still quite nice overall. There are no Floor Mats in the car so you could always clean them and then install a nice set of Floor Mats but I wouldnt do anything except give them a good cleaning. They are the Original 40+ year old carpets that were installed at the Volkswagen factory!!! ABOVE: The Original Glovebox Door wearing its Original Paint and its Original Box Liner is in excellent Original condition and still has its Original Tire Pressure Decal that is as nice as the day it was installed and the Black Lever to the Far Left inside the Glovebox is the Front Hood Opener that you simply pull down to release the Hood Lock... All pieces are very Nice Original & in Proper working order! ABOVE: The Nice Original Glovebox with the Original Owners Manual and Original Warranty and Emissions Manual still in place after 40 years! ABOVE: A Nice picture of the Instrument Cluster shows Gas Gauge to the far left along with the Speedometer in the middle and the Clock on the right! The Steering Wheel shows nicely with good color and the Padded Horn Center looks great and the Horn operates as it should from the Horn Pad. The Original Shifter is shown sticking out from between the Seats and you can see the Original Clutch, Brake and Gas Pedals coming through the Original Carpets. The Air Conditioning Unit runs the width of the Dash and looks nice and clean with the Sony Flip-Out CD Stereo is mounted in the exact location as the Factory Original Radio. The Stereo sounds good ABOVE: The Nice Original Painted section of the Dash looks great and the Padded Dash has a nice clean original appearance even with a couple of minor cracks. The Original Black Grab bar on the Passenger Side of the Dash is very nice and comes in handy if you have an older passenger getting in & out of the car. The Original Factory Painted Glovebox Door looks great and operates perfectly and the Ashtray in the middle of the Dash has the 4 Speed Shift pattern in White! The Factory Air Conditioning Unit looks nice and clean and it works as it should and the Sony CD Stereo was installed in the same place that the factory radio once resided! If you look to the far right then you will see that the Original Paint in the Passenger Side Door Jam is very Nice and Clean... The Door Jams on this car show nicely with nice original paint, nice original lock assemblies and nice original hinges. ABOVE: Notice the 4 Speed Transmission Shift Pattern in White on the Original In Dash Pull-Out Ashtray. This is pretty cool and it shows just how nice the Original Paint on the Dash is after 40+ Years.... amazing that you can still see the Shift Pattern in White after all these years as Shift Pattern would usually wear off just from use of the car combined with the use of the Ashtray and the California Sun takes its toll on many Dash components. The Original Fresh Air Vents in the Dash and the Knobs for the Fresh Air all work properly. Notice the Nice Original Grain in the Black Plastic in the Factory Installed Air Conditioning unit. Its little things like this that really get my attention when Im looking at Classic cars. They show that the car was not abused or left out in the sun all of its life as pieces like this will not only lose the prominant grain but the plastic will eventually become brittle as well. The Dash in this Squareback is very nice. Last but not least, you can see the top of the Factory Radio Bezel/Housing which now has a Sony Flip-Face CD Stereo System. ABOVE: This picture shows the lower section of the Steering Column with the Key in the Locking Ignition. Under the VW Key Ring you'll see the section of the Air Conditioning Unit that runs under the Steering Column to the Cold Air Vent to the very far Left or for the Driver. The Knob thats marked "AIR" turns the Air Conditioning on and has a Low, Medium and High Setting for the Blower Motor and the Knob to the right marked "TEMP" is used to control the Air Conditioning Temperature. You simply turn the TEMP knob clockwise to make the Air Conditioning Colder! ABOVE: The Sony CD Stereo installed just below the Factory Air Conditioning in the same location where the factory original AM Radio that was once mounted. The Stereo sounds great with the 2 Speakers which were nicely mounted under the Front Bucket Seats! This Stereo is a Face-Off Flip-Down AM-FM CD Stereo with the jack for an MP3 Player. It sounds pretty good even with the 2 Speakers although I find myself enjoying the car moreso that listening to the Radio!!! ABOVE: The Speedometer and Odometer along with the Trip Odometer show nicely with just 96,853 miles at the time that the pictures were taken. Notice how nice the original plastic Lense over the Speedometer looks and Original Silver trim around the perimeter of the lense looks great! The Trip Odometer works as it should as does the Speedometer and Odometer. In fact everything in the car works except the clock. ABOVE: The Front Bucket Seats are Super Nice and just as Comfortable. All of the Seat adjustments work properly and the Back Seat is every bit as Nice. The Original Door Panels are really clean and the factory Armrest and Lower Door Panel Storage Pockets are Nice and Clean as well with no sagging, rips or tears... just real nice originals. All of the Original Seat Belts are in Place and in Good working order. ABOVE: The Passenger Side Bucket Seat looks great and is very comfortable. The Seats appear to be lighter colored in some of the pictures but they are a little Darker than you see here. The Seats are beautiful both front and rear! ABOVE: Some of the Original Documentation which includes the Original Owners Manual and the Original Volkswagen Diagnosis Coupon Booklet and more. There are many receipts as well as owner history with this car!!! ABOVE: This picture was taken to show just how nice the Bucket Seats are although the pictures make the seats look White and they are a darker Tan as seen in the other photos. The Emergency Brake is located in the middle of the Seats along with the Floor Mounted Heater Control Handles and the female ends for the Seat Belts which work perfectly. The Emergency Brake or Parking Brake works perfectly as do all of the Heater Controls! ABOVE: A Close-Up picture of the Parking Brake, Heater Control Handles and the Seat Belts... absolutely everything works as it should and everything is in good condition. ABOVE: The Drivers Side Door Panel is in Great shape as is the Original Armrest and even the little Storage Pocket at the bottom is in great shape. These Door Panels are a darker color that these pictures would lead you to believe. They are more of a Darker Tan or a Carmel color. ABOVE: The Passenger Side Front Door Panel is in nice shape although these pictures make it look much lighter than the actual color which is more of a Darker Tan or a Carmel color. The Interior in this car is really nice and clean throughout. ABOVE: The Rear Seat is beautiful and as comfortable as could be in a Volkswagen Squareback Wagon. These cars are far more comfortable to drive than any other early Volkswagen that Ive driven and are just all around far more driver friendly. The Rear Seat Belts are all in Good working order and are nice and clean! ABOVE: This is a picture of the Drivers side of the Rear Seat which also shows the Nice Original Rear Interior Side Panels and Black armrest and the Original Black Ashtray. The Interior is very Nice & Clean and is comfortable throughout. The Original Retractable Seat Belts work perfectly in the front and rear of the car! ABOVE: This picture of the Passenger Side of the Rear Seat shows just how Nice the Rear Seat is and you also get a better look at the correct color of the Vinyl which is a Nice Tan and looks great. The Rear Side Panels that cover the interior from front to back look great and have nice original Factory Armrest and the Original Ashtrays along with the Original Retractable Seat Belts. The interior is really nice in this very Original 1972 Volkswagen Type III Squareback Wagon. The Upper sections above the Vinyl Side Panels still have the Original Paint which matches the Original Dash Paint and the Original Painted areas are excellent throughout the interior from the Dash all the way back to the Original Paint on the Rear Hatch. ABOVE: The Rear Seat as shown with the Passenger Side Front Bucket Seat Folded Up which shows just how Nice & Clean the Rear Seat is and it also shows the Headliner with the working Dome Light located on the Drivers side. The Dome Light comes on when you open either the Drivers side or Passenger Side Doors. These cars were only equipped with the Drivers Side Mounted Dome Light which is bright enough to light up the interior but I often wondered why Volkswagen didnt put a second dome light on the Passenger side. I guess like most things on these cars, it was just a matter of simplicity as the second light is not needed. If you look closely at far left, you can also see the Passenger Side Rear Seat Pull Strap that makes it easier for rear seat passengers to get in or out of the car. The Original Seat Belts are also shown and are all in good working order. ABOVE: This Picture was taken from the back of the car with the Rear Hatch open and shows the Rear Seat folded down to allow for a much larger Cargo area and as you can see everything looks nice and clean! ABOVE: Another photo of the Rear Cargo area from the Rear of the car with the Rear Seat folded down and the Tailgate/Rear Hatch Open. The Rear Hatch Weather Stripping is showing its age but it still seals nicely with no leaks or issues. ABOVE: This picture shows the Top of the Drivers Side Bucket Seat along with the Dome Light that is mounted on the Drivers Side just Door Post and as you can see, the Dome Light works as it should. You can also see the Off-White Pull Straps that are mounted on each side of the car which are there to help Rear Seat Passengers to get in and out of the car. These do come in handy from time to time but these look as though they were barely used. You can also see the Original Off-White Headliner clearly in this picture and it looks nice and clean! ABOVE: The Nice Original Dash along with the Original Steering Wheel show nicely overall. The Dash has a Nice Clean appearance as does the steering wheel. The Instrument Cluster looks beautiful with nice Crisp White Numbers on the Speedometer. The Same goes for the Gas Gauge and the Clock. They all have really Nice Crisp Bright White Coloring on the Needles and the Numbers. The Painted section of the Dash is very Nice and all Original. The Air Conditioning Unit
