Vehicle Detail
Here we have an excellent example of the "timeless" P1800ES. The all glass tailgate, the long, low roof line and 2+2 seating really set this car apart from ALL other classic cars. The extra ES interior space, makes it a terrific sports touring car too. I feel the orange color helps keep a wagon sporty and also really represents that early sports car era we all remember. This 1973 Volvo is equipped with 4 wheel disc brakes, factory AC, 4 speed with overdrive and the original 2.0 FI 4 cyl engine. "Fortunately" this ES was not fitted with the very common "giant" roof rack. This beautiful ES example has lived in the desert all its life. When I rescued her, much of the weatherstripping was rotted, as well as the dash and front seat upholstery. However the dry climate (and what looks like a thorough undercoating) has left her rust-free and solid as a rock. The car recently received new carpet and padding, front seat upholstery, new tires and lots of new weatherstripping and misc rubber. Also new points, plugs, wires, coil, cap, battery, and new injectors too. Radiator was serviced as well. Although the paint is 90% original, I have done some minor "spotting in" in about 5 areas where there were small (teaspoon size) dents. However, my touch up work is not perfect. The color is slightly off, but unless you study the car up close you'd never notice. The floors, rockers and both valances are original and STRAIGHT! There are a few touched up knicks and key scratches too. The paint is 39 years old, but as you can tell, it still shows well. Although the dash has some large cracks, it has never bothered me underneath the dashmat. The rear seats have a few tears in them (see pics), and AC vents do blow, but there is currently no AC compressor installed. Most lights work and all but the pressure guage work. All the glass is perfect and the windows roll up and down fine. The car starts right up, sounds good, idles nice and has plenty of power. No oil leaks, engine smoking. Note - the car runs cool, even in the Arizona heat. The clutch is smooth and shifting is easy. Braking and E-brake are fine. I think the suspension is surprisingly comfortable for a classic car. The ES models are said to be on the "hot" list, as far as collectablility. Their uniqueness and super low production numbers are sure to keep the prices rising. Only 8,077 ES wagons were ever produced in the two production years. To compare, there were close to 700,000 Ford Mustangs built in 1965 alone. How's that for rare. The Volvo P1800ES is fun, easy to drive and turns heads like no other classic car I've owned. This (late production VIN #) P1800 is a great candidate for a full restoration, but it is also a very respectable daily driver the way she sits. I will soon be adding a link with a short video of the Volvo running. I've located and restored many great classic cars and motorcycles over the years and I've been quite lucky finding "rust free" classics. I'm very selective of the autos I buy and always forthcoming on the condition of a car I'm selling. My Ebay rating is 100% positive for a reason.
