Vehicle Detail
This 1969 Ford Galaxie sold new at Haberfield Ford in Bakersfield, California. A local Superior Court Judge wanted to make sure his daughter had a reliable car for trips to and from Los Angeles so he purchased this 1969 Galaxie for her. Since that time the car has been driven 105,000, has remained in Bakersfield and has led a pampered life! In 2006 the original owner passed away and the car was given to her best friend. The car sat for many years unused until the friend decided to sell the car. I was given the opportunity to purchase the car and given the history and the condition could not pass it up! This Galaxie is a 100% rust free southern California car and truly a survivor! The car has had one driver quality repaint that still shines bright! Although not perfect, the body is very straight with no major dents or imperfections. There is one very slight crease behind the passenger’s rear wheel and a couple of small parking lot dings. At some point an aftermarket alarm was installed in the car. For whatever the reason, the key switch to activate and deactivate the alarm was installed in the leading edge of the hood on the driver’s side of the car. Installing the switch required a ¾” hole be drilled in the hood – BUMMER! I have removed the switch and installed a chrome plug in the hole. As mentioned the paint is driver quality. As can be expected for a car this age there are some scratches and imperfections in the paint. Despite those “Badges of Honor” the paint really shines. The car was sold new with a black vinyl top. When I purchased the car the top had been removed and the car was 100% turquoise blue; and that is lots of turquoise blue! I had the top repainted black bringing the car back to the original look and giving a little break in all that blue! The chrome and molding is all nice but original. As can be expected the bumpers have a couple little dings as do the moldings. The car runs and drives great. The original 390-2V runs great and the transmission shifts nicely. There are no strange noises, leaks or mechanical mysteries! I recently had the brakes redone, a new master cylinder installed, and the car tuned and serviced – It is ready to go! I think it would benefit from a new set of shocks but am not a real expert in the way these cars should ride. I have been told they should “Float” like the Titanic! If that is the case then this vessel’s shocks may be just fine! Tires are good with lots of tread. The fan shroud is cracked and has been repaired, a new shrould would finish off the engine bay nicely. Everything works from the license plate and trunk lights to the original AM radio! The A/C blows marginally cool and is ready for a charge. There are no electrical or operational issues that have caught my attention. The car’s interior is nice but has had several items replaced over the years. The lower portion of the front seat has been recovered (Could use a little "Build-Up" on the cushion) in black velour that does not match the original material still intact on the back portion of the front seat. The back seat has also had the bottom cushion re-upholstered. Although not a perfect match the material is the same type with a slightly different pattern. The front carpet has been replaced while the back is original. I am thinking the Judge’s daughter may have been a penny pincher! When I went to pick up the car after purchasing it I found myself trapped for 2 hours listening to stories about the car and the original Owner. TOO many to mention but a couple stick in my mind. Unless on the highway the car was never driven over 30 MPH and the A/C was NEVER used! I was told the original owner kept an ice chest full of rolled up cotton hand towels and on those hot Bakersfield summer days (110+) would roll the windows down, wrap a cool towel around her neck and drive! It is getting harder and harder to find unmolested, original hardtops let alone survivor cars with the history this Galaxie has! A set of TA Radials wrapped around some Torque Thrust mags and a dual exhaust system would make this car really pop and the envy of all others at Cruise Night! And the very best thing, it will not cost you an arm and a leg and you won’t be nervous to drive it around town or park it at the grocery store. If you are looking for that eye catching Muscle Car but do not want to take out a 2nd mortgage this Galaxie is one to consider! Thanks for looking and happy bidding!!
