Vehicle Detail

I bought this 1978 Volvo 242 GT in January from a Colombian/Swedish couple in Dallas. They told me a few conflicting stories about it when I talked to them during the transaction. I do, however, have the title in hand, so the ownership is not in question. It is clear to me that the car had been sitting for a number of years in dry storage. I found it to be in better-than-expected than condition when it was delivered to me and I could inspect it in detail. I immediately set to work on dealing with the known issues and discovering new new quirks. Due to several other project cars, though, I've decided to let this one go to a more dedicated home. Below you'll find a description of what I know. Body and Paint: The body is straight and in relatively good condition. There are two dents of note: one on the left rear and one on the left rear quarter panel. The paint is in pretty harsh condition in spots. Too many years in the Texas sun, I suppose. There is some rust on the body where the paint has chipped, but nothing eating through. The under carriage is in good condition as you can see in the photos. Some of the rubber seals, etc., are in need of some attention. Check out the comprehensive photos below. I have the fog lights and will include them with the sale. However, I do not have the grill that accepts the fog lights. The grill on the car is likely off a standard 240. Fuel system: When I acquired the car, it had been sitting for a few years. The fuel system had a little bad gas in it and the sender (rear) fuel pump was broken. I replaced the sender pump and sender unit, cleaned and rebuilt the fuel pump, and replaced all of the rubber hoses between the two. I cleaned out the fuel distributor as best I could without removing it. In 1978, the fuel distributor lived under the intake manifold. This fact basically requires taking apart the top of the engine to access it. Between the fuel distributor and injectors, there is likely more work to be done. It has trouble starting. When it does start, it starts a little rough (often requiring starter fluid) as the injectors are still a little gummed up, though it gets smoother each time I can fire it up (see video). Engine: The engine runs well once it is started. I haven't done any kind of compression test on it or driven the car more than in the driveway, so I can't say whether it pulls strong or not. It seems to be in good shape however. And, as I mentioned and you'll see in the video posted below, it runs very smoothly once it turns over. Wheels and Tires: The wheels are the stock 14" wheels. All four wheels have been powder coated and are in exceptional condition. There no marks or curb scratches on them, though the hub caps have seen better days. The rear tires are brand new (they don't even have one mile on them). The front tires are relatively new and are in good condition. Interior: The interior is in decent condition. The seats and seat foam are in good condition, though the fabric is loose all around. The driver's seat also has a tear along the side that would need to be repaired. The dash is cracked. The ceiling liner is in exceptional condition. The floor mats are original, which I was surprised to find. They are in fair condition, especially considering they are over 34 years old and the car has nearly 200k miles. Specs: Model : 242GT Year: 1978 Engine : B23E Power : 140bhp @ 5750 rpm Performance : Top speed 180km/h Equipment : Front spoiler, Alloy wheels Brakes : Discs Wheels : 14" Alloy Tires : 185/70HR14 Payment / Delivery: I expect a $200 deposit via PayPal within 48 hours of auction end. Full payment is required within 7 days via PayPal, cashier's check (in hand), or cash. You will need to arrange pick up or shipping. I am willing to meet you or a shipper at my house in Austin, TX. You will need a trailer to take this car as it's not reliably running nor is it registered. If you're shipping internationally, we can arrange a wire transfer and I can work with you on shipping. Questions: I've tried to describe the car accurately. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask a question via message and I'll post the answers for everyone to see. Thanks for looking!
