It is with much sadness that I put my 2008 smart cabrio turbo up for sale. I just bought car number 5 for a family of 3 drivers. The incoming car will be an occasionally driven “toy” car and that means the current occasionally driven “toy” car has to go. As I am also listing this car locally, I reserve the right to end the auction early.The turbo completely transforms a stock smart’s lackluster performance and makes the car a blast to drive. Gone are the tepid freeway merges, or waiting for a downhill section to pass someone. The GT-12 is a bit smaller than some other turbo installs on smarts. My goal for the turbo was to make the spool up unrecognizable for around town driving, as opposed to maximum power at high RPMs. This was splendidly successful; the turbo easily achieves maximum boost (8 psi) as low as 2,000 RPM with no lag. The turbo did affect gas mileage somewhat, but this car still gets low 30’s around town. I've described the build of the turbo in detail here and detailed the tuning of it here. In the beginning, there was a learning curve and some rough edges to the car after adding the turbo, but those have all been tuned out. Other turbo’d smarts have gone 50,000 miles with no issues reported and I am confident this one will do the same and more. After the turbo was added, the oil has been faithfully changed every 3,500 miles. As with every other turbo smart, there is an occasional CEL (check engine light) light – about once per tank when the temperature gets above 80 deg F, but less frequently when the temperature is less than 60 deg F. The CEL (P2227) light is not indicative of engine troubles and is easily cleared with the Scanguage. This car will not pass smog in California. Check my rating! Buy with confidence!
