1969 Mercedes-Benz 600 Consistently well maintained and renovated - Superb high driver quality or show car This beautiful 1969 Mercedes Benz 600 "Grosser" short wheelbase limousine is one of those cars that legends are based upon. Perhaps the most complex and over-engineered car ever built, this grand Mercedes has been well cared for its entire life. And attention to consistent and proper maintenance and repairs by the properly experienced Mercedes mechanics is what gives these cars a long and beloved life. It resided in a collection in dry Casper, WY for years prior to my purchase. It was repainted red on inspiration by the famous Mercedes 600 Pullman "The Red Baron", owned for many, many years by Baron Hilton (Hilton Hotels). The current owner of the Red Baron refers to my car as "Baby Brother". If you are looking for a 600 you are well aware of their reputation for high repair costs. You must purchase a 600 in extremely well maintained condition. My car is in terrific shape, the hydraulics and air suspension are in superb condition and the car rides and drives like a dream. Come and take a look! Exterior : The exterior was repainted within the last five years to very high standards. The paint is thick, smooth and straight. Our detailers performed a complete light color sanding of the exterior to get it mirror smooth. All chrome, stainless, glass, rubber and plastic on the exterior is in excellent condition. All glass is clear and not pitted nor fogger. Window rubber is still pliable and not rigid or dry. All exterior chrome is in outstanding condition. All lights work. Tires are essentially new. Hubcaps appear black in photos but are now red. Undercarriage : I have spent $3000 doing an magnificient detail and repaint of the undercarriage, inclusing gas tank removal and repairs of a 1" diameter rustty spot above the tank. It is superb and professionally done by my restoration shop thats done many other cars for me. Note that the inside of the bumpers are even properly painted! Check out the photos at the very bottom of the auction! Engine Compartment : The engine compartment is very clean and well sorted out. All wiring is proper and all equipment is correct and working properly. The engine runs beautifully and starts right up cold or hot. It is smooth at all RPMS, the valves are adjusted properly and the entire exhaust system is in excellent condition with no leaks or other problems. Power steering and brakes work great and both alternators are working fine. The air and hydraulic pumps work fine and do not leak or show any sings of trouble.Transmission engages quickly and up and down shifts propely at all RPM's. Trunk : The trunk is in fine condition but the carpeting is looking just slightly tired. All jack equipment is there and the spare is brand new. The hydraulic automatic trunk opening and closing switch and motors are all working fine. The trunk latch hydraulic control was recently rebuilt by an experienced professional. Interior : The interior is wonderful and the front seats have recently been reupholstered in proper leather and obviously done by an experienced Mercedes upholsterer. Since the photos were taken the front upper door panel leather has been restretched so taht the "dotted" effect is gone. They are beautiful. All surfaces are in wonderful condition...seats, carpet, headliner, wood, door panels, padded dash, dash chrome, instruments, window glass, curtains and anything else I've left out. Turn signals work fine. Emergency brake properly auto releases. Automatic door locks work, hydraulically operated front seats work fine as does the reclining rear seat. The heating and air conditioning system also all work fine. Hydraulic System : The entire hydraulic system is in superior operating condition. There are no leaks that we can find. We just rebuilt the trunk latch, underhood control valve and sunroof hydraulic "ram". The height adjustment system works fine. All windows, seats and ventilation systems work great. Air Suspension : The air suspension works fine and all the air bellows have been recently replaced. The ride height valves also look new but we don't have documentation as to when they were replaced. Driving and general impressions : I must say that this car drives wonderfully. It is amazing how a 41 year old suspension design can work so well. The combination of air suspension, fully independant suspension and a very tight unibody construction can really do a job! The engine makes that wonderful mechanical rumble that only a 6.3 liter Mercedes OHC V-8 can! It accelerates smoothly and with great torque. The transmission shifts perfectly, is well balanced, and the shift points seem absolutely perfect. Inspection : I use a super mechanic, Tony Wahl of Tony's German Auto Care in Santa Ana, CA. He has performed all of the repairs and is highly skilled in 600's as he also maintains the Red Baron. If you wish to purchase I can deliver the car to Tony and he will provide you with a thorough report (at your cost of course). The ONLY way to buy a Mercedes 600 Grosser is to find one that has been consistently cared for. It is simply not feasible to restore one. The parts are so incredible hard to find and work comes at a high cost.This one has the right pedigree and will live for many decades yet to come. My reserve is reasonable considering how difficult it is to find a car like this with all aspects of it in proper condition and which can be considered a very well maintained and detailed original car. I've owned dozens of classic cars and bought and sold many of them here on ebay. Please check my feedback and how pleased the buyers of my cars have been. I have clear title in my name with no leinnholder. My guess is that this car could be driven comfortably across the country...but of course old cars can surprise you!
