Vehicle Detail
Barn Find: '78 Lincoln Town Coupe last registered in 1991. This car was in a barn in Cooperstown NY that had almost completely collapsed under a snow load, I couldn't just watch it get crushed so rescued it and am offering it here as is. The car is complete and appears to have only 60.000 original miles. There was 20 + years of barn filth on this car and I have provided pictures both before and after I cleaned it up. The motor is stuck, gas tank has fallen down. The interior is in really good shape with dual power split bench leather seats in tan, power windows with vent windows (one vent down inside door), CB radio and most power options available at the time. Door panels are in good shape too, I'd say the interior is the cars strongest point. Body is arrow straight and has minimal rust. Bumpers are dent and rust free with nice black rubber trim still in tact, front grille and surround are oxidized but straight and excellent, Micheline tires, including spare, could be original and are holding air, wheel covers have some curb scrapes but still present well. Interior and exterior lights all work. This would be a great parts car with lots of good sheet metal or perhaps a restoration project. You will need to tow or flat bed. rolls easily. Email me for more pictures or with any questions. I added some more pictures per a request. The lenses, front and back, are in good shape with pitting to the chrome but no breaks in the plastic. I don't know anything about the mechanics, brake lines, condition of engine or transmission etc. The front clip on this car is worth the opening bid. Leather will clean up nicely, I cleaned the door panel you see in th picture. I put a battery in to check the electric, all lights worked and various buzzerz etc. I didn't try the windows. Headlight covers are there but no vacume present to keep them closed. Really needs a new home, my neighbor is already not speaking to me!On Mar-08-12 at 10:25:49 PST, seller added the following information: Per another request: The rust on this car is primarily surface rust in places where the paint has failed. Both doors open and close effortlessly, incredible given the age and lack of care & maintenance. There are no holes, tears/splits or open seams in the upholstery anywhere. I believe that the interior would clean up to almost new condition with the possible exception of the carpeting. The original black rubber mats with the Lincoln insignia are all still there. There is an open seam in the steering wheel. It appears the the straps that held the gas tank in place rusted through. The gas tank itself looks good but I have not had a really close look at it or at the underside of the car in general. After living with this car foe a few days I am of the opinion that it could be brought back to life but it would be a project. On Mar-08-12 at 14:44:23 PST, seller added the following information: I have had a lot of questions about this car! Please understand that it does not run. I am assuming that the engine is seized up but don't know that for sure. There are three or four belts and several pullies, smog pump, A/C compressor, power steering pump etc. so it's impossiblse to see if the fan will turn without getting into taking things apart, just suffice it to say that its all there and hope for the best. There is oil in the crank case and anti-freeze in the radiator all 20 + years old. Milage stated is whats on the odomoter, Judging from the wear on the seats, matching set of Michelins which were the tires sold with this model car in '78, overall condition of the body (sitting in a barn for 20 years not withstanding) I am making an educated guess that milage could be original. Please don't think that you can bring transporter plates and drive this car back home, it will need to be towed! On Mar-09-12 at 14:19:25 PST, seller added the following information: I have added some images of the underside, as best as I could get. It seems solid with a lot of surface rust to the frame etc. There is a coating, perhaps the soundproofing, peeling off but I couldn't poke my finger through the metal anywhere, One photo shows the gas tank resting on the ground. The tank itself looks solid. The muffler and pipes are dragging on the ground as well.On Mar-11-12 at 13:59:27 PDT, seller added the following information: I have added a couple of pictures of one of the front seats per a request. I did clean this seat up and it came out beautifully. The rest of the interior, seats, carpets, door panels, headliner etc. are really filthy but judging from how well this one seat cleaned up I believe it would all clean up great. This would be a great car to marry with a desert car who's body is excellent but interior is shot from the heat and sun. It would cost thouseand to reproduce an interior with such a complex pattern and somehow the repros never look quite as good as the factory originals. This color would go well with many exterior colors. On Mar-11-12 at 14:07:01 PDT, seller added the following information: I agree, this interior would be a great up-grade form the "Terri Cloth" interior that was offered in '78 ! On Mar-13-12 at 15:55:32 PDT, seller added the following information: Per a request I have added some additional pictures of the interior. You can see both front seats and one side of the back. I have not cleaned the rest of the back seat and will leave that for the next person. I hooked up a battery and the drivers seat moved in most directions.
