I have a 1979 CJ-5 Renegade. - It has a straight 6 (three speed and reverse). - It has a custom spring over lift kit, 35" tires with 50% tread, alloy rims, paint is in good condition, and the interior is completely rhino lined. - It has power steering. - It has a bikini top. - It comes with the winch and custom front and rear bumpers. - Ive had the steering rebuilt. - Ive had the starter rebuilt, new gaskets and hoses where needed, new alternator, new distributor, etc. - It has aftermarket bucket seats up front, made of a more durable material (black) with center console To give you a background on the Jeep. I bought it back in August of last year (2011). I had started a construction company, and we had just finished doing a lot of work in the Birimingham area following the tornado of April (2011). Things had been going really good, and I always wanted a CJ-5. I searched for some time before I found this one for sell in North Alabama, for around 5k. I wanted one with the body and paint in good shape, but I was going to do the lift, minor repairs, etc. The only catch on this Jeep was that it had a rebuilt title, so naturally I wanted to get it checked out. The gentleman I was buying it from said it had a front fender replaced, and there was no significant damage. Supposedly the vehicles value at the time rendered it unrepaireable in comparison to the cost of repair. Needless to say, I had it checked out. The frame was sure enough straight, and there werent any complaints about the overall condition. Once I got the Jeep I did a number of things to it. I had the starter rebuilt, a new oil pan and head gasket put on, as well as other various items. I then began looking for a lift, which turned out to be a nightmare. A CJ-5 spring over kit happens to be very difficult to find. I ended up finiding one at Rocky Road Outfitters, and after shipping, spring and shackle upgrades, etc. It ran me close to $2k to get it here (I have receipts.) I then had the kit installed at Sports Trucks here in Birmingham, Alabama. They also completely redid the steering, as well as welded (on top of the bolts is already had) the steering box assembly to the frame for added strength. This cost me close to $2k as well. Including the other things various repairs and parts, this Jeep has cost me more than I want to add up. I am no doubt going to lose on this car. All that being said, I have been very pleased with the Jeep. When you drive it around, people definitely look. I've also been asked on more than one occasion if it is the Dukes of Hazzards Jeep. There are no problems that I am aware, other than it needs an $85 sending unit to make the gas guage work. The lights on the dash even illuminate. The CD player isnt hooked up either. It only has the bikini and canvas doors, but the seats are aftermarket. It is not a frame off restoration, but definitely in good condtion. Trying to be unbiased, and in comparing it to other Jeeps I have looked at, I would feel very safe giving the Jeep an 8 out of ten. Its flaws are minor, and i would say in common with a 79' CJ-5. The undercarriage is blacked out, but the only signs of rust is very minor, in fact it's surface rust, in the lowest parts of the rear fender well. I have kept the Jeep garaged. I am hiding nothing. The Jeep is very nice. Please look at the pictures below. I took undercarriage shots while it was parked in my garage. It obviously has some dirt, but you can see for yourself that there is no mud, bad rust, etc. Keep in mind its a 79' so its not going to look perfect, but it is very clean. The flash doesnt help either.
