Vehicle Detail
HISTORY: I’ve owned this California car for almost 16 years and it has always been well taken care of, garaged, and covered. In 1993, the previous owner (an acquaintance of my brother) had considered selling it and showed me the car. It was stored in his grandmother's garage and in really great condition. It ran great and I loved the car but, he was asking more than I could afford at the time. Three years later, he called my brother and asked if I still might be interested in the car. When we went to see it again, it was still in the same garage and in the same condition. His asking price was more reasonable and I immediately bought the car. I've never, ever regretted it since it has brought me many years of enjoyment. I'm only selling this car because I recently became a father and I hardly have time to spend on it like I used to. My daughter is two now and she and my wife are my main focus. This car needs a new owner to pay attention to it. If there is such thing as a perfect car, this is not it but, if you love Mustangs it's pretty darn close. Please take your time and examine the photos. They are all straight digital shots with no enhancement. Pictures and videos were shot on 02/04/12. I have super high resolution photos of all the pictures here, and more, if you're interested. I also have rebuild photos available. BODY: The car was red when I bought it but, the body and paint were in excellent shape so I left it alone. A few years later I realized my goal for this car so I had it painted back to the original factory color (Dark Moss Green). The body work (minimal) and paint was done at Tiffany’s Body Shop in Salinas, CA (09/08/98). It was completely stripped to metal, primed and shot with Glasurit paint (www.glasurit.com). It’s been 14 years since the paint job and it still looks incredible. Like I mentioned before, it has always been garaged and covered. I can count on one hand how many times I've washed it in the last 10 years. It usually only needs a dusting. The paint has never been rubbed or buffed out because it never really needed it. This paint still has a lot of life left in it. Most of the body work that needed to be done was the trunk lid and both lower door corners. These three areas are beginning to show some rust starting to bubble the paint. These areas are very, very small and would be very easy to repair because of their location (underneath stripes on front bottom of both doors and trunk lid lip below chrome trim/letters). I was actually planning to do it myself since it's so minor. Enough said, just look at the pictures. ENGINE: The engine is a 1987 Mustang 5.0L HO (high output) converted to carburetion and dressed stock. When I bought the car, that’s what it had. Every day, I drove it from Salinas to Monterey CA to get to work and never had any issues with the reliability of this set-up. When I decided to rebuild the engine I did it the same except I replaced almost everything. I reused the block (professionally machined), heads (rebuilt to stock specs.) and power steering/alternator brackets (professionally powder coated). Absolutely everything else was replaced new using the Concours correct Ford parts for this car (except the performance parts listed below). EVERYTHING IS NEW! down to the last bolt, nut, washer, screw, wire, clip, hose, cable, clamp, spring, belt, valve, cap, plug and connector. Every part I used was researched and I have all the receipts. For the sake of performance and drivability, I chose to use the following parts that are not Concours correct parts (as is not the engine): Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap Intake Manifold (EDL-7521) Edelbrock Performer 600 cfm carburetor (EDL-1405) upgraded to electronic choke Pertronix Flame-Thrower Billet Distributor (PNX-D130700) Pertronix Flame-Thrower Ignition Coil (PNX-40111) Pertronix Flame-Thrower Spark Plug Wire Set (PNX-708105) FlowKooler High Volume-Aluminum water pump (BRA-1680) Milodon 160° High-Flow thermostat (MIL16400) Cloyes Gear Timing Set - Hex-A-Just True Roller (CLO-9-3135) - timing chain, original true roller, steel/iron sprockets Shelby style Windage Tray Kit (6687-1K) 3 row radiator (1464RS) Tony D. Branda Tall polished valve covers (PRCATVC24P) My goal was a correct looking engine, with reasonable performance, and with the simplicity of electronic ignition. I believe the results were stunning. I also believe that the new owner will never want to close the hood. The headers are heat wrapped and installed with Stage 8 (www.stage8.com) header bolt locks. ENGINE COMPARTMENT: With the engine out, the engine compartment, frame and wheel wells were completely stripped down to metal, primed and painted using automotive paint (spray gun and compressor). The front of the car was carefully removed, piece by piece, to gain access to the internal frame for restoration. Like the engine, EVERYTHING was replaced new. Here is a brief list of the new parts: Voltage regulator (Autolite) Starter Solenoid (FOMOCO) Brake Master Cylinder (has very minor surface rust but otherwise new) Brake distribution block and all brake lines (FOMOCO) Complete electrical wire loom from firewall to starter solenoid (FOMOCO) 3 core radiator and radiator hoses (FOMOCO) Transmission lines (FOMOCO) Heater motor (reproduction) Battery (Autolite) - needs to be replaced soon according to my battery charger Battery cables (Autolite) Hood includes built in turn signals that have been completely restored and are functional (this was option for that year that look really cool). TRANSMISSION/DIFFERNTIAL: Stock C-4 with new filter, pan gasket, and front/ back seals. I have recently developed a small transmission fluid leak that, fortunately, hasn't affected the performance. Source of the leak is currently unknown. I'm not sure if the rear end is original or not since I didn't get to restoring the rear axle and suspension. The door tag code says the differential is 2.79:1 SUSPENSION: Front suspension has been completely rebuilt with PST’s (www.p-s-t.com) Polygraphite Super Kit (paid $574 - I have receipt). Power steering control valve and slave cylinder were replaced using products by Flaming River (www.flamingriver.com). Global West (www.globalwest.net) Subframe connectors (459-911) were professionally welded in three years ago. Rear leaf springs, shocks, and shackles were replaced maybe 12 years ago. Restoring the rear suspension, axle, and differential was next on my list but life's little surprises put things on hold. I had already started stockpiling parts for this project. I have a new rear sway bar (in the box) and many, many, many, other parts that I will include with car. INTERIOR: The interior is complete and original as far as I know. The only things I replaced were the carpet, floor mats, and stereo (Pioneer CD DEH-1000). None of the doors or panels was ever cut for speakers. I used to have a portable speaker that fit under fold down area but I took it out years ago. The front seats are original and are ready to be restored. I have seat covers on them now to prevent further ripping. The fold down rear seat is complete and functional as is the trap door to the trunk. All the windows and vents are working fine. The floor shifter is kind of loose and needs to be rebuilt soon. At the time of the engine rebuild, I removed the heater box and rebuilt the system with new seals, core, and hoses. Works great and has no leaks. All of the weather stripping and headliner were replaced when the car was painted and are in great shape. TRUNK: The trunk has been restored and includes the correct trunk board, molded nylon trunk mat, matching nylon tool bag (w/tools and under spare tire), spare tire mounting kit, and brand new Firestone spare tire. Rear light buckets have been removed, restored, lenses replaced and sealed. WHEELS/TIRES/BRAKES: 1967 14” x 6” Styled steel wheels (Scott Drake reproduction of original wheels / C5ZZ-1007BR) and 1968 caps (Scott Drake reproduction / C5ZZ-1130WR). 1967 caps are blue. I liked the way the red caps looked with the paint color. Tires are Firestone Firehawk SS10 (235/60R14) in good condition. Not sure how many miles are left on them but, they still look and feel great. The brakes are drums all around and were rebuilt at the same time as the engine and suspension. All new lines too.
