Vehicle Detail
Please take the time to read the entire description: You are viewing a 1983 Chevy Chevette! This is a nice Southern car which prior to me purchasing it was owned by an older couple in Georgia, and spent most of it's life being towed behind their RV. -so I believe that the "08208" miles showing on the odometer is legitimately 108K miles.(AutoCheck says "problem", but if you read the report, it's just because it's only a 5-digit odometer, and so "exceeds mechanical limits"....) Then, it was in storage in an enclosed garage for a while. It has the 4 cylinder 1.6L motor(new, with less than 2500 miles on it) and a 4-speed manual transmission. Rear-wheel drive. Manual (non-power) steering and brakes (Steers very easily...). The car runs and drives BEAUTIFULLY! Drives straight as an arrow- and has the feel of a sports car with it's rack and pinion steering. I LOVE the way this car drives! It does not drive like an old car. It is precise and tight! Not sloppy at all- feels better than the Chevette I learned to drive a stick on in the 80's! Here is a video of the car being driven. (Seems like I'm going slow in the vid..but I had actually gotten it up to 60MPH): The Chevette had a brand new motor installed in it, and when I bought the car about a year and a half ago, it did not yet have 500 miles on it- and was not even broken-in yet. In the meantime, from me using the car, the motor has gotten broken-in nicely (I have not even put 2000 miles on the car since I've had it) and now has much more power than when I first got it, and runs smoothly and quietly, just as you'd expect a new motor to. No smoke, of course. This is a very solid car- as close to rust-free as you will likely ever find in a Chevette. The only real rust to speak of, as far as I can see, is on the underside of the driver's side rear door (see pics), and it is not very bad. The floors are solid, as is the spare tire compartment, and the underside of the car is very clean. I do believe that this is the most solid Chevette you will find east of the Rockies! The clutch is great (I assume it was replaced when they installed the new engine), and the 4-speed manual transmission shifts nicely into all gears, with no problem- although it is a little tight when downshifting into first gear sometimes. I wouldn't hesitate to drive this car ANYWHERE. All the lights (headlights, turn signals, brake lights, reverse lights) work- as does the AM-FM radio (I believe it is the original stock radio). Windshield wipers work, as does the rear defogger and the heat/defrosters. Even the parking brake works! The car originally had A/C, but it looks like they did not re-install the compressor when they put the new motor in- and some of the piping is missing. The evaporator coil and the condenser still appear to be there- and there is a compressor on the floor in the back of the car- I have no idea if it is functional or not (You can see it in one of the pics) or even if it's the one for this car...but it's there. It looks like it would be quite easy to resurrect the A/C on this car if you wanted to- looks like all you'd need is the bracket for the compressor; some tubing and a receiver/dryer....and maybe a compressor, depending on whether or not the one in the car is good or not (It actually does not look to be very old). All the glass appears to be good- no cracks. The weatherstripping around the windows in the doors is old and dried and cracked and even missing in a few spots...but there are no leaks so far into the interior- and I have driven this car in heavy rain- and no water comes through. The actual weatherstripping between the doors and body is still quite good. This car does NOT leak from under the dash/through the firewall, like many Chevettes do. There are three cracks in the dash, as can be seen in the pics. The turn signal indicator lights on the dash do not work. (The turn signals work, and flash as they should...just the indicator lights on the dash don't do anything.) The car had been repainted in the recent past- and it is the stock original color and matches the interior metal surfaces/door jambs, etc. very well. The paint job apparently was not professional. The vertical surfaces on the car are pretty nice....but there are splotches on the hood as well as orange peel on the hood and roof- but it looks like the paint will last for quite some time, and it will keep the car from rusting...and if you keep it shined up, the car looks nice from a few feet away. I get people coming up to me and asking me about the car almost every time I drive it. Just bear in mind that the paint is by no means perfect. But for a daily driver......it looks just fine. The interior is pretty nice. The carpet has some age/wear on it.....but there are no holes in the carpet or in the seats. The headliner is NOT falling down. The driver's side sun visor is a mess though, as you can see in the pic. Other than that,. the car is very comfortable for a small car- and the seats don't feel like they have any wear on them at all. You'd never believe you were sitting in a nearly 30 year-old car. I normally hate small cars- or even mid-size cars...but this car is very comfortable for me- and I'm nearly 6' and 200 lbs. Tires are very good and all match (except the spare, of course- which looks to be the original donut spare- and looks like it was never once used). Tires are mounted on Vega GT wheels- which really dresses the car up. Add center caps, and it would look really sharp! I also have the original stock Chevette wheels (with crappy old tires mounted on them) which you are welcome to have with the car. Car also comes with a nice sturdy tow-bar, which attaches to the bracket on the front of the car with two pins. The other end of the bar mounts to a 2" tow ball on the tow vehicle- simply hook it up...put the transmission in neutral and unlock the steering column, and you can tow the car anywhere. (Another great reason why it's great to have a manual transmission....that would quickly burn an automatic out...or require you to unhook the driveshaft each time you towed it!- with this, it's a quick, easy hook-up, and no worries!) I also have the owner's manual with it, and a Chilton repair manual for it, which will also go with it. The only mechanical issue as far as I can tell, is that the choke is currently not working- so you have to pump the gas peddle when you first start the car up after it has been sitting, and thus need to keep your foot on the gas peddle until it warms up. Otherwise, it starts on the first crank every time, and runs GREAT! I am only selling this car because I really don't have need for it. I bought it when the gas prices got up near $4 a gallon- as it gets around 35MPG....but I rarely drive it- as I usually need to haul a lot of stuff- so I end up driving my van, anyway.....although, with the rear seat folded down in the Chevette, you'd be surprised how much it can carry! (Just can't compare to my full-size van though- nor carry big things like lumber!) I've tried to describe this car as well as I know how- I think just about anybody would be impressed with it- as it is in great shape...especially for a 29 year-old car- and can be driven as it is. Do realize that this is by no means a show car....this is a daily driver, and in good mechanical shape with a solid body- and if you are looking for a driver or something to make into a race car or custom, this would be a great car for you. It is a great economical car to drive- parts are readily available at most parts stores, like NAPA and Autozone- and they are quite cheap. It is easy to work on; easy to maintain and gets amazing gas mileage! (Try finding a modern car that will COMFORTABLY seat 4 good-sized adults and have room for cargo, that gets 35MPG!). I have not had to do a thing to this car in the time that I've had it- other than oil changes (I changed it more often than will be necessary while the motor was still in the break-in period)- I made sure to drive it at least once a week. It has never failed to start nor let me down. As far as being a daily driver, this car needs nothing, as far as I can see- just hop in...turn the key, and go.
