Unlike most 3-series cars from this era, this one did not come with rust as a standard feature. This is one of the cleanest E30s you’ll find for short money. The car’s transmission is on the way out, and we recommend a manual 5-speed swap or an automatic transmission rebuild. Good transmissions for these cars can be found for $300. As shown in the photos, the car also has some damage to the driver’s side front quarter panel. The interior is in good—not great—shape, equipped with the popular E30 sport seats. All things considered, this car will make a great little project. The 325e is the most versatile iteration of the legendary E30 3-series. The “ETA” M20 straight six was the least powerful six-cylinder unit offered by BMW, but it makes up for its lower power output with loads of low-end torque and phenomenal gas mileage. The same engine in my bigger, heavier 5-series returns an average of 31mpg city/highway. The rigid, responsive E30 chassis makes this car a lot of fun in the bends, too, and for the more spirited drivers, this car is a fantastic base for a performance build. With a five-speed swap and some quick bolt-on parts, this car becomes an autocross and road course monster. If you’re a horsepower addict, the low-compression engine also invites turbocharging or a head swap from the M20B25 cars. Taking either of these routes can get you to 190-200hp with a modest budget and some time in the shop. If you just hate pumping gas, this car will be your new best friend. With a little imagination, this car can be a track star and a fun, efficient commuter.
