Vehicle Detail
This sale is for a rare opportunity to own something no one else has. Guaranteed. This sale is for a 1959 Dodge Coronet Ambulance/Hearse. She is called the Memphian. This custom bodied car was built exclusive for the United States Air Force. The company who built this car Memphis Coach of 2087 York Ave Memphis Tenn was contracted by the military to build 9 extended chassis Dodges. Most cars used by the military were standard wheelbase sedans or wagons with the extended body behind the rear wheels. Nothing really custom and look odd. Not this car as you can see. Memphis started with a fourdoor sedan. They used a longer two door sedan door for the left (drivers) side. The extended quarter panel was from a convertable. The chassis was lengthened. The right (passenger) side used normal 4 door sedan doors. The window frames were changed and are exclusive to the conversion. The HD rear springs were doubled to a total of eight. This car is number 3 as on the dash. Uncle Sam is thrifty when he orders a car. This is a power brake HD cooling and A/C WITH MANUAL STEERING! This car was completed in July 1959. Several years later the company went out of business. Today only two other 1959 Dodge Memphian's have surfaced making this an unbelieveable find! She has rolled an amazing 33K miles since new. Many times after these vehicles were removed from service they went straight to the junkyard gone forever. She survives today. Several interestings things I have observed. The car has a steel roof (many during and after this time period had fiberglass. The side windows are date coded and match the build date of the car. While moving the car it was noticed that the ribbon speedo still worked. See for yourself. That is an honest 5 mph coasting! Often these speedos do not work. When at highway speeds above 60mph the ribbon turns red. Very cool. The car still retains all of the military id badging. The spotlight on the roof was used to read tower signals. There is a plaque on the dash (pictured) on how you can read tower signals. Remember the cold war was in full swing. It will need a total restoration. It is not running. The body and floors are above average for a 1950's Chrysler vehicle although will still need attention. The condition of the motor is unknown. It is full of oil. The carb/generator and left exhaust manifold were removed and not with the car. I have a later model low mile 318 with a Torqueflyte with the ebrake on the tailshaft from a motorhome for extra if interested. The car has a gurney. For restoration I have an extra passenger door. The car will come with a bill of sale. The wheels pictured are not part of the sale and will come with rollers. Finned Chrysler vehicles 57-61 are highly collectable and sought after. The 59 Dodge is a one year with unmistakeable style with its menicing evil look. The mile high fins and rocket thruster tail lights. There is nothing else like it. Would be a great promo vehicle to advertise your business. Would be a great hauler too. Don't miss out. Description.. Sale Terms 1. All offers are in U.S. currency only.
