Vehicle Detail
1961 Plymouth Savoy 4 door Sedan Rust Free and Low 57,876 original miles This is a no reserve auction so bid to win ! Calling George Jetson! With a face only a mother could love, here is one interesting car. It is a low mileage Plymouth Savoy with a 318 V8 and pushbutton automatic transmission. It has PS, standard brakes and a power antenna. This is appears to be a rust-free car (I'm an ex-bodyman so I know) that was repainted about 8 years ago and then put into storage. It was just pulled out of storage and needs a good cleaning. The reason I mention this is that the photos show the car in all its dusty, dirty glory. Note: this was an expensive paint job (approx. $5500), the front was removed and painted separately, all the jams were painted, etc. Most of the original factory undercoating is intact and there is no rust under it. The chrome on the car is absolutely beautiful. Hopefully the photos illustrate this. If you think the front end is unusual, check out the dash. This is true "1960s Space Styling" at its best. Most people that look at it say "that can't be original". Oh yes it is. And the rear end? Check out the "Rocket Engine" tail lights. The engine runs but needs a good tuneup, carb cleaned, etc. The door panels are all excellent. The seats have the original fabric on them with a few minor tears but quite usable (!) The headliner has some stains but isn't bad. The keys are missing but key sets are easy to find on eBay. If you want a really fun car that will really turn heads, this is it. Absolutely perfect for cruise nights and Sunday drives. Shoot me a message if you want full resolution pictures. On Jan-01-12 at 12:29:17 PST, seller added the following information: I spent some time cleaning up the car and have some additional things to mention. First, I have taken photos of about half the vehicle and can send those to anyone who would like to see them. It took me about 2 hours to clean things up today and take the pictures, its freezing here...I will take the second half of the pictures tomorrow when it is hopefully warmer. OK, here's what I have found: It appears to me that the rear of the car has not been repainted. I believe it is the original robin's egg blue paint from the factory; nice, well preserved factory paint. (Exception: some surface rust on the rear trunk, see pictures). I pulled the rear seats and cleaned the trunk and there is absolutely no rust through anywhere. There is some surface rust in the truck but can easily be sanded and painted. The original jack and spare rim (not the tire) are bolted in the trunk. I also cleaned up the front of the car and, as mentioned before, the chrome and trim are really excellent. I also cleaned up and took pictures of all the door jams, door bottoms and rocker panels. They are all in excellent condition, hard to believe actually. OK, that's it today for the Sunday 1961 Plymouth Savoy show. I'll be back tomorrow with the rest of the pictures and more exciting commentary. On Jan-02-12 at 12:08:14 PST, seller added the following information: I took a lot of additional pictures today. I have posted 5 new ones on this ebay auction. For those that are waiting for the full resolution pictures via email, hang tight. I have about 2/3rds of the car cleaned up and pictures taken. When I have all the pictures done, I will email everyone a full set. The pictures added today show some shots of the engine, closeups of the dash, a shot of a right side rear door bottom and rocker panel, and a view under the left side valve cover. A couple of people are interested in the car specifically because of the low mileage and wanted some additional "evidence". I believe there are four things that would lead to the conclusion the mileage is accurate and not "over once". 1) The overall condition of the car is great. Door panels are mint, dash is mint, body isn't dinged and dented. It would seem unlikely that this car went 157K miles. 2) The floor pedals show little use. The brake and gas pedal have little wear. These are not pedals that you can slip new covers on, the rubber is actually molded to the metal frame itself and they are original. 3) There is essentially no engine sludge. I pulled a valve cover and inspected the rocker galley (see picture). It is extremely clean, this is almost certainly not an engine with high mileage. 4) The last oil change sticker shows 42,166 miles. This is often the best indicator of true mileage, an oil change sticker that is 5K-20K less than the odometer mileage. For those who are inquiring about vehicle transport be prepared for a wide variety of prices. You can find hundreds of places that move vehicles on the web. Some advice: I don't really see why you would need expensive covered transport. This is not an open car (convertible tops can get damaged on open transport) and about the worst that could happen is that a little heavy rain might seep into the door seals. This is unlikely to cause any damage. I'd get quotes on "open transport". That is your standard car carrier sort of transport. Prices for those are easily found on the web. I have also used www.uship.com to find carriers. This is a website that a lot of the smaller carrier companies use to get jobs. I've had some really nice "independent truckers" transport for me via uship and things worked out fine.On Jan-03-12 at 04:31:14 PST, seller added the following information: Quick Note: As mentioned before, this car needs a new set of keys and their locks (2 doors, the trunk and ignition). If you search eBay you will find many people selling these for $10 and up. If you search Google, you will find quite a few also. A couple people have asked about the "minor wear on the pedals" and wanted pictures. I have several, just shoot me your email and I'll send them to you.On Jan-03-12 at 10:56:26 PST, seller added the following information: Another update: Please note that my ebay name is Honest Thomas. My goal is to give everyone a complete description of this car so those that aren't close by will feel comfortable with its condition. I probably go overboard a little with the excess commentary and pixs and such but I want potential buyers to really feel comfortable with what is being sold. That being said, here are some negative points to throw up on the table. This morning I pulled the seat covers of the front seat and "surprise" it needs to be recovered. The foam underneath is in fine shape but the cover has split. In actuality, the upright front seat cushion is pretty good. Its the cushion that you sit on is split and needs recovering. Negative point number two: there is some rust on the right rear of the car under the trunk lid. After a good cleaning, it is obvious this isn't going to "buff off". It is just surface rust but would need to be painted over for a perfect finish. I have all of this photographed so please send me your email and I'll send them to you. There is also some rust under the rear window trim that would need to be taken care of. And some Good news: I took a number of shots underneath the car and it indeed seems to be absolutely rust free. All door edges, all rocker panel seems, all floor panels, everything is solid. I have many pictures of this stuff also. I think what we have here is a car that was stored for a really long time but some moisture on the top surface of the car sat under a few of the trim pieces and this has started some rust. When I pressure washed the trim, a lot of leaves and dirt came out. Stuff that had been in there a while. Over a decade or so, even in a dry environment, that will do it. Oh, one other thing to mention, the package deck (behind the rear seats) is discolored. This is the case with all old cars but I thought I'd mention it. If you look at the photo of the rear window you can see this. It isn't too bad. OK, I think I've covered this car from stem to stern now. If anyone has any other questions, feel free to shoot me an email or call at 603-969-5085.
