Vehicle Detail

1978 Volvo GT 242 (2- door) B21E Engine Turbine Spoke Wheels Fog Lamps Auto Security System AUCTION: This is a used fully operational 242 GT being sold as a project car or fix-ur-upper. It is being sold AS-IS with no warranty written nor implied. It is solely the buyer's responsibility to read the description thoroughly and to satisfy him or her self as to the condition of this vehicle prior to bidding. HISTORY: The GT is one of Volvo’s classics. Especially during the 240 era. There was only three years they where built, 1978, 1979 and 1980. Volvo decided to add a sporty flavour to the 240 line by producing the 242GT two-door saloon style, with a 123 bhp B21E engine, 20-spoke alloy wheels, front grill embedded fog lamps, stiffer suspension with larger front & rear anti-sway bars, black corduroy with red pinstripe interior, silver exterior paint with red and black pinstriping and a front wrap around spoiler. Volvo designed this GT to be driven with a little fun in mind. Here’s way I am selling this classic 242GT. Since 1988 I have restored completely 6 different 240 models from the ground up and a 1980GT was one of those. In 2003 an accident total the 1980GT and ever since I have been waiting for another GT classic to come home. I came out of market and noticed a man walking around my wife’s 1982 240 4-door I had restored for her. This man was admiring the work I had done on it and pointed across the way to his 1978 242GT sitting there. He said he wished he had the time and money to restore it, but had neither. He asked then if I was interested in purchasing it from him, knowing that I would do the work he had always dreamed of doing to it. You know the answer to that question. I have had this GT since April 2011 and have done nothing with it, because of my busy international work. I was preparing to start in on it’s restoration finally, when last month in November another 242GT came into my life. Since the newly found 1979 242GT had the sunroof and this being the one feature the currently up for bid 1978 does not have, I decided to restore the 1979 instead, because of it being near identical to my 1980. DESCRIPTION of CONDITION: This 1978 242 GT has 190,346 on the engine and runs great ! It has a manual 4 speed with OD (overdrive). There are a few rattles and squeaks to this older car, but nothing a little restore won’t fix. The body is in fantastic shape and a great start for recondition. It has a few of your normal buggie digs here and there. There is a 6" scrape on the front of the hood (see photo). The driver’s side (LH) rear corner above the taillight looks like a small body repair was done, but nothing that really stands out, extremely minor (see photo). There is no huge body rust, just the normal small pits from chipped paint. The battery tray has corroded from acid spill over in the engine compartment. This has been a west coast car as far as I know. And far enough away from the ocean to not experience the salt air. It needs a paint job. The notorious silver gray is faded along most of it’s edges. All the glass is good with the exception of one small chip on the driver’s side windshield. The trunk leaks from a worn out trunk seal, mainly from cold air condensation. Interior is in great condition ! There is a small upholstery separation (see photo) in the driver’s seat left shoulder where the thread has come apart from the seam. The front seatbelts do not retract. The gearshift cap for the overdrive is cracked and is tape on (see photo). Instrument panel is functional except gas & water gage does not work. AC does not work. Heater works really good. A small 2" dash crack was sealed (see photo). There is a missing map pocket on the driver’s side. All the interior and exterior lights work except there is one fog light out. Parking light & tail light lens have cracks and weather checks. The engine is prone to vapor lock after it has been driven for a while and gets hot from running. What happens is, the engine will play hard to start. So the previous owner had his mechanic install a toggle switch on the rocker panel to over ride the hot start relay allowing the engine to start. I have only had to use this toggle band-aid once since I’ve owned it, but I really haven’t driven it all that much. I’m guessing the fuel pressure regulator or pressure sensor needs replacing. Something to check and fix while restoring the engine compartment. The rear muffler needs replacing. The previous owner had an aftermarket smaller one installed and it sounds a little loud. Tire tread is in excellent condition. There is no stereo or radio in the car. This GT has a fully functional Carbine Plus 5900 Automotive Security System. Other than what has been described from the short time I have owned this GT, there could be some other very minor things that need attention I am not aware of. PAYMENT: A closing auction payment of $500.00usd is required within 24 hours. Full payment is required within and no later than 3 days of auction close. All payments are payed through PayPal Only ! SHIPPING & HANDLING: Transportation and delivery are the sole responsibility of the buyer. Prompt arrangement must be made between buyer and seller to pick vehicle up within and no later than 14 days after closing bid. If you are planning to fly in and pick the GT up, Medford, Oregon will be the closes airport. The seller will deliver the car to the airport in Medford or the Grants Pass area only, for an additional $60.00 fee ($30 for fuel & $30 for a 3 week road permit) payable to seller’s PayPal within 24 hours after arrangement. If buyer is planning to drive GT away, a road permit will be required. Seller can obtain a permit for the buyer at buyer’s expense, from the Oregon Department of Transportation 2 business days prior to buyers arrival. Permit payment of $30 is payable to seller’s PayPal immediately after this arrangement. If buyer is planning to use a car trailer to drive the GT up on and haul, a meeting time will need to be arranged in advance between buyer and seller. (Note; a tow dolly will still require the GT to have a road permit if any of the cars wheels are touching the road). If you have any question about the auction, please feel free to email. GOOD LUCK !
