Vehicle Detail

Here is an affordable 1961 Chevy Impala 2 Dr. sport coupe/bubbletop that is a nice driver, ready to cruise but needs some work as you go. Mechanically great, the 283 3-spd. column shift is all original, never rebuilt with approximately 62,000 original miles showing on the title as well [I had to replace the speedometer over the last year so it reads 57,800 with a stamp date of early 1961 on the housing]. The car is a rare Arbor Green with a mild custom green interior, had at least one re-paint. I have enjoyed driving this car to the hilt for the attention and compliments it gets even though it is not perfect. Both the original VIN tag and Cowl Trim tag are present and right where they were from the factory. The 283 [June '61 casting date] motor runs well, has never been worked on to my knowledge and uses a little oil but not a big fogger, just some blow-by from the draft tube after a fast stretch. I have some newer parts for the car that I felt it needed, especially a pair of NORS lower rear quarter panel patches from the 70's which have been obsolete for years and are hard to find and expensive. I also have a rust free [with some dents] nice-fender-capped passenger side fender that is included. The brakes are fine [other than a chirp in the right front wheel but there are 2 boxes of new brake shoes that are included if it needs them], the dual glasspack exhaust is fine and has a nice rumble to it, the wiring and lights are all fine, the glass is all good and unbroken and working up and down [a couple need a little help]. I just installed a brand new starter and a good transmission [3'rd gear went on the original and it goes with the car as well]. The clutch pedal assembly has been recently replaced as well with a totally restored one, all new bushings, bead blasted and painted, new return spring and pedal pads. It has new tailight lenses and back-up lenses, too and a new back-up light switch on the steering column. The brake and clutch pedals both work great. The windshield has scratches and some chips but is not cracked. The bubbletop rear window is nice, no other glass is broken and it is all tinted EZI. This driving ready car has an NOS front accessory grill guard that was rechromed years ago and is very nice showing just some shelf wear but no rust at all. The fender birds are NOS, the front and rear emblems are new reproduction and nice, it has a new gas tank, sending unit, throw out bearing with a freshly ground flywheel, the clutch is tight but works great, I installed new AC-Delco rear air shocks, NOS turn signal switch, all new radiator and heater hoses, an NOS speedometer cable, air filter, tie rod end [the front end is nice and tight], had a complete anti-freeze flush [engine, radiator and heater core with new Prestone put in], complete ignition tune up [wires, plugs, cap, rotor, points], a professionally rebuilt carb just purchased off of Ebay, new fan belt, the front bearings greased, new oil filter in the cannister and oil [Pennzoil], new air filter, front tires balanced [rears are fine and plenty of tread on all 4], and anything else the car needed to get it safe and roadworthy. I have the original dark green carpeting and the floor mats that were with it with the Chevy logo on them. The speedometer, odometer, all heater controls and heater box, gas gauge, horns, radio, all lights and turn signals [back up lights, too], vent cables and dome lights all work fine. The wiper motor does not although I have an NOS Delco rebuild kit for that. The clock does not work and I've never messed with the lighter. All 20 lugnuts on the wheels are brand new. All 4 valance panels are good to nice, the spare tire is not original, has the Chevy bolt pattern but is off of an Olds Cutlass Rally and is 14", the carrier bearing is fine and all U-joints and cups have been greased. The side mirrors are brand new repros. The original bumper jack which is there has an NOS hook on it and the jack itself works fine and is nice and clean. The spare tire hold down hook and wing nut are also nice and clean. There is an Arbor Green 14" wheel rim that is included to match the original style wheels on the car [have the cooling slots and nubs for the hubcaps]. The car cruises well even at 60 mph and the tire treads are all good. The automatic choke is finicky sometimes, especially when under 40* until it warms up but runs much better quicker in the warmer weather. I've always kept the gas tank full and the gas gauge does work well. As far as the body goes, the 61 is a good looker from 20 ft. out, up close you can see it has some repairs and needs some. The frame is fine, greasy up front, there is a rust hole in the back before the rear axle from a mouse nest. It does not affect the driveability of the car but should be fixed. The hood is one of the best ones I have seen, the driver's side fender is good, the right has a fender cap problem for the newer rust free one to fix. The doors are OK with some work needed, the inner and outter rockers need work as well as the lower rear quarters mentioned for which I bought the panels. Underneath the driver's side floor pan is bad but the other 3 seem good-fair [see pictures]. The trunk has the usual rot in the corner brace sections but I have brand new reproduction boxes and filler pieces, 4 total for that work. The trunk floor itself is OK for now and is original. The car goes down the road great and is fun to drive. If you are looking for soemthing to cruise in now while picking away at her this is the car.
