This is a well-maintained Volskwagen, which has recently had a new top and new interior. It's a great running Thing that looks great and really turns heads wherever we go. I took this Thing in trade from a Florida collector who used it at his lake house. It's been kept in great running condition and has received a basic cosmetic restoration. The paint seems to have been done a number of years ago and isn't the greatest, but the interior and top are much fresher. At some point, the floorpans were replaced and done very well. There is some minor rust in the usual places, but nothing excessive. The car was certainly kept in very good running condition. It fires right up with no hesitation, runs strong and shifts smoothly. All of the lights and stereo work, but it is missing the heater canister, so we installed a very cool aftermarket electric heater under the dash. This heater does the job and adds an interior light as a bonus! We've had the oil changed and have replaced the rubber gaskets around the trunk, hood and windshield. The VW Thing, which was introduced to the U.S. market in 1973, originated as a military vehicle called the Kbelwagen, later called Type 181. It was a no-frills product with a 1,584-cubic-centimeter engine that delivered 44 horsepower. Body The Thing, a four-door convertible, is 148.8 inches long, 64.6 inches long, 63.8 inches high, and weighs 1,984 lbs. It clears the ground by 8.1 inches, according to CarFolio.com.
