Vehicle Detail
Here we have a 1972 VW Vanagon that is the Westfalia edition. I bought this van early in 2011 and as many projects go with many people, I began extensive work on it and simply didn't have the time to complete what I began. The Westy currently starts strong and runs but the carburetor needs retiming and I would not suggest driving the Westy in its current state, without first having a tune-up performed. This Westy has spent most of its time in Florida, a few years in Chicago and a few years in Ohio. Work that I have performed: New Bilstein OEM+ shocks all around ($420)New brake pads all around and the front has new calipers and rotors. ($350)Timing belt, seals, gaskets, washers (misc engine work): ($475)I have a new full shifter assembly in the bag from busdepot.com that I will include, this will help the preciseness and smoothness of shifting.Interior has been mostly spot primed and would just need a good cleaning and would be ready for paint. The flat portions of the interior sheet metal have been roughed up and smoothened out a lot, so the few small holes would need to be dealt with and then ready for prime and paint. Here is some info that most Westy shoppers are looking for (as I was): The turning signals, brake lights and headlights all work with no problem. The transmission shifts fine in every gear (once you get the hang of the gearbox feel and shape)The engine leaks a negligible amount of oil when it runs. Before I had the carburetor timing issues, I took the Westy on a 150 mile trip with no trouble and it leaked about 1/4 of a quart of engine oil.The seats are comfy and the viewpoint from the front seats is nice, the seatbelts work as well. The camper lining (for the pop top) is relatively new and will not need replacing. The sheet metal overall is in decently good shape. The metal over the gas tank/engine compartment has 5-10 1/4-1/8 inch rust holes that will need filling and resurfacing. The rest of the floor metal for the bench area is in good shape with very minimal 1-3 rust holes, otherwise its ready for priming and painting. There is only one rust hole on the exterior of the Westy and this is next to the driver side rear window. The undercarriage of the Westy has minimal rust and is not a grave concern. The brakes are in great shape all around. The tires have one odd tire (3 matching with good tread) and so 1-2 tires may be needed to have a solid matching set.The suspension is in great shape with four all brand new Bilstein OEM+ shock absorbers recently installed. The bad:1. The interior is all intact but was taken out to be recreated with new wood and better upholstery, the potential buyer would need to assess all the interior components and have a plan to either put the interior back in or recreate it.As stated, there is a negligible oil leak from the engine (no white or bluish smoke). The rust holes as mentioned.
