1988 Lincoln Town Car Very nice body (look past the minor dings) Very nice interior Good running condition This is a southern car, brought to Michigan in late 2008. The body is still very solid, with just the slightest hint of corrosion as shown in the photos below. The glass is decent, though the windshield is beyond its prime. Never a serious wreck that we're aware of, though you can see where there have been a couple dings. THE GOOD: The car has an obviously solid body and undercarriage. It would be an excellent candidate for a little mechanical work that would turn it into a great driver. With just a bit over 145K miles it has a lot of life left before more major problems crop up. The alternator and water pump were replaced recently, and the car is a good reliable runner. It is very comfortable and an easy driver. THE NOT-SO-GOOD: As is typical of this vintage of Town Car, the door panel arm rests are shot. The rear window motors have stripped gears (easy to find and inexpensive), the driver's window is intermittent. The heater core has been bypassed. The heater core seems to be intact but a valve has failed that pushes heat into the passenger compartment all the time, not great in summer! There is a lot of paint fade but it hasn't exposed the metal to cause rust. Both rear doors will open only from the inside. The handles can be reached from the front so we never repaired them. The AC is not working since there is no belt. I honestly don't remember if the compressor works or not, since I pulled the belt to help with fuel efficiency. When the windows started failing this became and issue but I don't usually use AC anyway. The radio doesn't work, but it will play cassettes after it has warmed up a bit. There are other minor glitches but nothing that really bothered me. The big thing is the motor. Being a southern car the gaskets are shot. We've had to put oil in it often, probably a quart every other tank, give or take a bit. No biggie if you know it has to be done. The motor itself seems to be strong to my untrained eyes and ears, but it may prove easier to pop this one out and throw in a different one rather than trying to deal with all the gaskets. Or, use this as a source of excellent parts to keep yours going. There is certainly a lot there to pick from!
